Yankees beat Blue Jays 4-2 for 8th win in 9 games

NEW YORK (AP)—After he was knocked out in the third inning at Fenway Park in early June, A.J. Burnett(notes) vowed to improve.

Has he ever.

Burnett scattered six hits over seven innings to win for the third time in four starts, and the Yankees opened the long holiday weekend with a 4-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday.

“When you’re clicking, everything just flows,” Burnett said. “When you’re clicking on pitches, you don’t even think about anything. You know, it’s just all confidence out there.”

Robinson Cano(notes) homered leading off the second and Alex Rodriguez(notes) starting the eighth. The Yankees, who wore jarring red caps as part of Major League Baseball’s Fourth of July weekend celebration, rebounded from Thursday night’s 8-4 loss to Seattle for their eighth win in nine games following a 1-5 slide.

“It was good to have a day game and get back at it really quickly,” said Rodriguez, whose 567th homer—his fifth in eight games—left him two shy of Rafael Palmeiro for 10th place.

It was the start of an unusual stretch of four straight day games between New York and Toronto, a series that includes Saturday’s observance of the 70th anniversary of Lou Gehrig’s famous farewell speech.

Burnett had lost 5-1 to his former team and Roy Halladay(notes) at Toronto on May 12.

“Completely different,” he said. “Not even close. I didn’t even pay attention to who got in the box today. The first time was kind of weird.”

Burnett (7-4) allowed both runs, struck out seven and walked two. He got his first three strikeouts on 96 mph fastballs, then rung up his final four with curveballs in the low 80s.

Since the loss at Boston, he’s allowed three earned runs in 27 1-3 innings (0.99 ERA).

“It’s not so much speed, it’s the location,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

Phil Coke(notes) and Phil Hughes(notes) split the eighth, with Hughes retiring Vernon Wells(notes) on an inning-ending grounder with a runner on second. For now, Hughes has supplanted struggling Brian Bruney(notes) as Mariano Rivera’s(notes) primary setup man.

“I’m just going to continue to go out there and throw when I’m called upon. I don’t really care, man. Everybody’s caught up in what inning,” Bruney said. “It doesn’t matter.”

Bruney has allowed three runs in 4 2-3 innings since returning from the disabled list.

“We need to get him going, and we need to get him right,” Girardi said. “We’re going to pick some innings, and they’ll still be important innings.”

Since he’s been shifted from the rotation to the bullpen in early June, Hughes has gained 3-4 mph on his fastball to 95-96.

“I can let it go,” he said.

Rivera struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 21st save in 22 chances, No. 503 of his career. Outside of Rivera, the pecking order has been uncertain.

“It didn’t really seem like we settled into any particular role right out of the gate, because we struggled,” Coke said. “Lately, it’s been a little bit of a free-for-all, but we’ve all been effective.”

Brian Tallet(notes) (5-6) gave up three runs—two earned—six hits and four walks in six innings as Toronto lost for the fifth time in six games. He walked Brett Gardner(notes) and Derek Jeter(notes) starting the fifth, then fielded Johnny Damon’s(notes) drag bunt and flipped the ball low, a play at first ruled an error but then called a single.

Tallet walked Mark Teixeira(notes) on four pitches, forcing in a run and putting the Yankees ahead 2-1. Another run scored on a passed ball by Raul Chavez(notes), who appeared to get crossed up on the first pitch to Cano.

“I put myself in that position,” Tallet said. “No disrespect to Brett Gardner: He’s the guy we don’t walk in that lineup. It’s inexcusable.”

Alex Rios(notes) had a tying single in the fourth. Wells, dropped to No. 6 in the starting batting order for the first time since June 3, 2005, hit a long homer to left in the sixth on an 0-2 pitch to pull the Blue Jays to 3-2. He entered in a 2-for-19 slide.

“If I want to get back to the position I’m used to hitting, I’ve got to do a better job,” Wells said.

NOTES: Cano had gone 12 straight games without an RBI since June 17. … Yankees C Jorge Posada(notes) rested his sore left thumb for the second straight day. He was hit by a foul ball Wednesday night. … Teixeira has gone 68 at-bats without a home run since June 12. … Scott Rolen(notes) singled to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 20 games. … LF David Dellucci(notes), brought up from the minors before the game, went 0 for 2 with a walk and a hit batter in his debut for the Blue Jays. INF-OF Russ Adams(notes) was designated for assignment.

Well at least you acknowledge that the Yanks are going to win it all this year. :)

First of all - I am not a Red Sox Fan - They spend too much in my opinion as well - (see Dice-K). Although they aren't nearly as ridiculous as the yanks.

Second of all - The yankees 2009 chamionship team is going to be led by Texeira and Arod on Offense and Sabathia and Burnett on the pitching side. You won't be able to dispute that once the season is over and the facts are that the best two offensive threats were BOUGHT and their best two pitchers were BOUGHT. Hence the Championship will be BOUGHT. The supporting players are interchangeable (Melky, Jeter etc. are supporting players to the Texiera's and Sabathia's etc.).

And Yes, Mariano is homegrown and the BEST reliever ever. Can't take that away from them..

Wow, I may be an arrogant Yankee fan but lets look at some of the genius comments posted by the competitions fan base a little more in depth. Jeter is a lead off hitter he is batting 305 having a great year. No he is not a home run hitter but so what? Petite is a 500 pitcher. Really??? Last time I looked he was 8-3 with a 4.25 era vs Tim Wakefield who everyone is making a big deal over at 10-3 with 4.30 era. Petite is a number 4 or 5 starter, not too shabby. Joba is still a kid with great stuff but is learning how to pitch not just throw. Boston went after Tex and A-rod and lost both to NY, if Boston has been successful in acquiring them it would not have been for free. Would they then stand accused of spending to buy a championship? 3 of the Yanks 5 starters are homegrown. Boston spent what 150 mill for Dice-k? Even though he is having a bad year I think it was because of the WBC and I think he is a very good pitcher. Not a CC but very good. Cano, Joba, Rivera, Hughes, Posada, Cervelli, and Melky are some of their home grown talent. Your points are poorly thought out and clearly a knee jerk defensive reaction to your jealousy of the greatest franchise ever.

-------- (great name, by the way) - I won't even bother to refute all of your erroneous points or discredit you further than you have already discredited yourself, with your complete lack of knowledge of all things Yankees - but I will say this - I am a TRUE Yankees fan, and I absolutely consider ARod a TRUE Yankee. PS, his steroid use was NOT in NY, and if you sincerely believe that any of the "star" players from the Red Sox or any other team for that matter were not using steroids at some point, you're just lying to yourself. What really makes me sick about people like you is - why WOULDN'T players go to the team offering the most money? Why does that make you so angry and jealous? I'm sorry your team, whoever they are, couldn't afford Sabathia and Teixiera. I really am. But guess what? The Yankees could, so that's where they are playing. Drop the bitterness and get over it. I sincerely look forward to reading whatever moronic things you write next... it's quite amusing when trolls like you show up and make fools of yourself!

I know I am wasting my time on Comment Board with mostly lowbrow yank fans and the points above will be lost on mostly ignorant yankee fans who are more arrogant than educated when it comes to baseball.

So, anyway, enjoy your HOLLOW 2009 Champioship yankee fans - you certainly bought, uh. I mean, earned it!!

Before you throw Jeter (who obviously is a true yankee) out there, trust me at 35 years old he isn't the one who is carrying this team to a championship this year. Texiera and Arod will be doing much more heavy lifting on offense than Jeter will. On the pitching side, Just look at who the number 1 and two pitchers are and the story is told. That's right It's the afforementioned sell-outs Sabathia and Burnett! And before you throw Joba and Pettite out there keep in mind that the current 37 year old Pettite isn't much more than a .500 pitcher at this point and Joba just set the all time record for LEAST number of decisions in a ptchers first 26 starts at the beginning of their careers. Joba rarely gets past the 5th inning and on a team with a suspect bullpen that asn't a pitcher who adds much value..

Seriously even yankee fans don't consider Arod a "true yankee". Sabathia flat out admitted the yankees were far from his first choice and he only signed there because they paid tens of millions more than anyone else would offer. Texeira also admitted that the main reason he's with the yanks is for the money:
"This is a business, guys. Everyone knows the Yankees paid the most".

Congratulations to the yankees on their 2009 World Championship. By buying the two best pitchers on the market (Sabathia snd Burnett) and the best position player (Texeira) they have finally spent enough to buy a championship. With those three $420 million dollar sell-outs performing at a high level of play and last years $300 million dollar purchase, Arod, back on Steroids (five homers in last seven games) they are a lock to win it all.

It's too bad it's a HOLLOW champioship because all the players who will be carrying them were just bought and aren't "true yankees".

Wow, that beaverkiller is sharp. I've never seen such creative, well thought out rhetoric in my life! You must have graduated the second grade at least. If this is the place where you feel a need to spout vile sexually charged innuendos, I suggest you change your tune or get reported. There are minors who come here to read and that sort of stuff has no place in this forum. Just stick to the usual Yankees suck diatribe and all your other creative digs and stop being an animal. No one can make you stop posting here regardless of which team you like, it is still the good ol' USA, at least for now, but please you are an embarrassment to the poor couple that birthed you.

But then you are a Red Sox fan. Who were you a fan of in 2003?

LOL...all I know is that Yankee fans hate my posts. Sure Great Experience I do have wayyyy too much time on my hands. Did you think that maybe just maybe I was off of work dumbass. Oh and Yank09, I looked wayyyy back to July 1 because it was the day before yesterday moron. The Sox didn't play on Thursday. You're a freakin retard. It doesn't take but 5 minutes to cut and paste moronic posts by Yankee fans onto another commentary.. If you had any intelligence you would know that. By the responses I get and the backlashing I can tell it really bothers you. Nice win by the Yankees yesterday even if Toronto pitching had to walk in a run and toss a pass ball for another. What did you win by ? Oh that's right by 2 runs. Hell who knows if they(Toronto) hadn't given you the game you'd still be playing. It wasn't like you had a helluva lot of offense. Here I go again rambling on so therefore I have no life...lol cole2rocks I'm glad you have shown your true colors as just another Yankee fan thinking that you're better than everyone else. Pity. I thought for a while better of you. Stephen K....tap...tap...tap...still waiting. I hit that one on the mark. No class and I really never thought that Stephen K would be a man. Ain't that right Great Experience and tme? Good thing I work at night and have access to computers or I wouldn't be able to piss you all off....lol Go Sox !!! AL EAST LEADERS

OMG!!! When the Yankees win you start singing the same old song, Yankees suck, past and present would prove otherwise. Yankees are on roids and cheat, uh Manny, Bonds, Palmero, Mcguire, guess we don't have the franchise on that. We buy our championships, guess being number two and three on spending makes you immune to criticism. Guess collecting corporate welfare from NY called luxury tax and placing the money in your pocket is a great business strategy and smart way to run a team. Steinbrenner bought a run down franchise from CBS for 10 million dollars and returned it to it's fromer glory and made it the the most valued franchise in the world. If anything is true it's that the Yankees are the greatest ever and this simple fact kills you all. You will never know what it's like to root for the best and every player that comes to this team will tell you there is nothing like putting on the old pinstripes. Screaming Yankees sucks makes it no more true than saying the Earth is flat and deep inside you all know it and it turns your stomach. And Daniel how many bodies you got buried in the basement? Your a really sick ticket and this goes beyond friendly rivalry, do something, go to therapy to treat your Yankee envy and your various and sundry other mental ailments and delusions.

FROM ANY TEAM get trashed when there is NO PROOF AT ALL. . if you have any proven facts on this could you please post it so we can all read it. PEACE BUDDY !!!!!!!
