LOS ANGELES (AP)—Manny Ramirez’s(notes) suspension didn’t slow down the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Dodgers played their 50th and final game without Ramirez, beating the Colorado Rockies 1-0 Wednesday on pinch-hitter Rafael Furcal’s(notes) RBI single in the eighth inning. During Ramirez’s absence, the Dodgers went 29-21.

Ramirez was suspended for violating baseball’s drug policy on May 7. He is eligible to return for Friday night’s game at San Diego.

“It’s not until you lose somebody like Manny that you realize that there’s no safety net out there,” Dodgers manager Joe Torre said. “I continue to talk about how fortunate we’ve been with the number of close games we’ve won.”

The Dodgers’ sputtering offense has scored eight runs over the last five games.

“This ballclub feels pretty good about themselves,” Torre said. “I mean, they’re at a frustrated stage right now because we haven’t scored runs and they’re fighting it a little bit. But they’ve played hard. As a team, we’ve pretty much gotten a lot out of what we have.

Center fielder Matt Kemp(notes) is excited for Ramirez’s return: “We get a great hitter back, somebody that can help us drive in some runs and get some things going.”

Torre doesn’t expect Ramirez to make an immediate impact after just five minor league rehab games.

“It’s still going to take him some time to settle in, but I think it’ll help everybody else, too,” Torre said. “I’m going to get the same player back. I mean, I think his ability goes far beyond what caused the suspension. But it’s going to take some time for him to get in game shape and for him to get comfortable.”

Juan Pierre(notes), who has started every game in left field during Manny’s absence, will return to being a part-time player despite hitting .318 with 21 RBIs, 31 runs scored, 15 walks and 21 stolen bases.

“Juan came in and did an excellent job. He’s an All-Star in my book,” Kemp said. “If it wasn’t for what he’s done for our team, we wouldn’t be in this position right now.”

The defending NL West champions got off to a 21-8 start and had were on a seven-game winning streak with a 6 1/2 -game lead in the division when Ramirez was suspended.

The Dodgers lost four of their next five, then went on a 12-3 run and increased their division lead to a season-best 9 1/2 games with a 1-0 win against Arizona on June 3. They’ve leveled off since then, going 13-11, But still entered Wednesday with a six-game lead over San Francisco.

“I’m not surprised by what they’ve done in his absence—not with the addition of Orlando Hudson(notes) and what he’s meant to their infield defense, the professional they have at third base in Casey Blake(notes) and the kind of year that Andre Ethier(notes) is having,” Rockies manager Jim Tracy said. “They’re a very talented team with a tremendous amount of athleticism, but the biggest thing has been the improvement of their bullpen.”

Ramon Troncoso(notes) (2-0) pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the win and Jonathan Broxton(notes) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 19th save for the Dodgers, who have a major league-leading 17 wins by a one-run margin.

Brad Ausmus(notes) led off the eighth inning with a single against Rockies starter Jason Hammel(notes) (5-4) and advanced on Juan Castro’s(notes) sacrifice. Russell Martin(notes) ran for Ausmus and scored when Furcal stroked a single to right field on the right-hander’s 100th pitch while batting for Troncoso.

Hammel pitched a career-high eight innings for his first complete game. It came in his 41st big league start. He allowed five hits and struck out five.

“One run can do it. That’s baseball. I made a good pitch,” said Hammel, who was 5-0 over his previous seven starts.

Clayton Kershaw(notes) allowed just one hit over five innings and threw 97 pitches. Kershaw struck out five and issued a season-high five walks.

Brad Hawpe’s(notes) two-out double in the first inning was Colorado’s only hit until Ian Stewart(notes) doubled with two outs in the seventh against Ronald Belisario(notes).

NOTES: San Diego’s starting pitchers this weekend against the Dodgers will be Chad Gaudin(notes), Josh Geer(notes) and Josh Banks(notes). Ramirez is 5 for 11 with a home run against Gaudin, and 2 for 3 with a homer against Geer. He has never faced Banks in the regular season. … Dodgers pitchers struck out 39 Colorado batters during the three games.

Angel fans are one step above Clipper fans ... can't sell tickets as the Anaheim Angels and need to hang on LA to get some TV time ... way to go Dodgers! 8 games above .500 without Manny ... can't wait to get his bat back, and Pierre can keep all outfielders rested for the long season!!!

Some LA fan got really pissed cause I said the west is the dodger's to lose. I meant cause SF and CO would have a heck of a time catching them.

Yes I do stand by that the Dodgers pitching is not quite that good, that means the Rockies bats needed to make some contact during the 3 games. Rocks outscored the Dodgers and still lost the series, does that mean the Rocks pitching is better than the Dodgers ? No

LA is good, had to be one rockies posting - nice email to me Coby.

Kammie remember if the Giants didn't choke in game 6 you would've been talking. They suppose to hate the Angels and that LA tag when you're playing in anaheim is a joke so stop hating you probably was the same way when they won in 1981 and

I remember when Manny was first suspended...everyone who wasnt a Dodger fan was dogging on the Dodgers saying that they were going to slip and fall out of first place! well Mannys back and look at the Standings! I hope they continue this pace. Me personally, i feel whoever is hot at the end of the season going into the playoffs have the upper hand! Plus i hope the Giants get into the playoffs instead of the the rockies. I think we are due for a Dodger-giant playoff series!

HEY BUD SELIG- What kind of punishment is being able to play in a minor league team afiliate? I can tell you what kind- Major League BS. The same ML BS that a decade of stats are. The same ML BS that a decade of MVP awards are. The same ML BS that a decade of World Series tiltles are. The same ML BS uneven # of teams (yes Bud's old Brewers) in divisions. The same ML BS inter league play w/ uneven schedules amongst the same division tema playing for a title. The same ML BS that says owners' greed first.

Juan Pierre is a fourth outfielder, at best. In fact, it can be argued that Nyger Morgan, recently traded from Pittsburgh to Washington, is a better palyer than Pierre is. Similar skillsets, but Morgan is younger, faster and a better defender. If only he was a better baserunner.

Kingpaddy, it's what the "angels" do. They have no hardcore fan base. They have bandwagoneers. Think about the owner's move to incorporate Los Angeles into a team that isn't housed in L.A. county and you'll think of how the "angels" took the old angels' name. It's all to try and create a fan base that the Dodgers have always had. As if Dodger fans would feel it's okay to root for the "angels" because they claim L.A. Never. Dodger fans have always been (and always will be) Dodger fans. I know some people from New York (Yankees fans) that have a deep respect for the Dodgers history in L.A. -not so happy about Torre, though. People even moved from Brooklyn to L.A. when Koufax went out there. And the feud between the NY Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers coming to the west side? Fu'get about it!!

#38,Kingpaddy,You're showing your age,I used to watch homerun derby on Sat.morns....Frank Robinson competed wearing a Reds uniform,I remember the houses beyond the left field fence and wished to live there just to get baseballs, turns out that maybe 100 kids were outside that fence....Name the field in which Home Run Derby was aired? Wrigley in LA,most people woudn't believe there was such a place unless you were eight years old in 1960 and thought baseball was everything.....I wonder which ball player won the most cash?

As a kid I got to watch the Angels play at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles. They were a AAA Pacific Coast League team. When the Dodgers arrived the franchise moved to Seattle and the Angels were gone forever.

. When the American League gave a team to LA they called themselves the Angels thinking they would pick up some of the old fans. in 1961 they played in old Wrigley Field. We hated them. If they would of called themselves something else it would of been OK but the "old Angels" were kind of sacred.
