Sanchez’s hustle play leads Pirates past Cubs, 3-0

PITTSBURGH (AP)—Their bench was thin, their minds admittedly jumbled a few hours after watching three more teammates leave. The Pirates had every reason to expect to lose to the Cubs after management effectively told them they’re not ready yet to win.

Ross Ohlendorf(notes) and Freddy Sanchez(notes) made certain it wouldn’t happen.

Ohlendorf pitched seven innings and Sanchez got the depleted Pirates going by scoring from second on a ball that bounded only a few feet from home plate during the fourth inning, helping Pittsburgh beat the Cubs 3-0 on Tuesday night.

Sanchez, coming off probably his worst game of the season, went 3 for 3, reached base four times, and drove in two runs as the Cubs lost for only the sixth time in 26 games in Pittsburgh.

The victory came a few hours after the Pirates dealt outfielders Nyjer Morgan(notes), Eric Hinske(notes) and reliever Sean Burnett(notes), leaving them with only 23 players in uniform. The deals weren’t popular in a clubhouse in which several players, still unhappy with the earlier trade of Nate McLouth(notes), prominently displayed pictures of Morgan in their lockers.

“We lost (some) great guys on the field and in the clubhouse. That’s the business of baseball,” Sanchez said after the last-place Pirates pulled within 1 1/2 games of the fourth-place Cubs in the jumbled NL Central. “We’ve got to keep playing no matter what happens.”

Sanchez played as if he wanted to make up for going 0 for 4, grounding into a double play and stranding six runners during a 3-1 loss to Chicago on Monday.

Sanchez singled to start the fourth against Ted Lilly(notes) (7-6) and moved up on Andy LaRoche’s(notes) two-out single. Brandon Moss(notes) struck out swinging, but the ball bounced into the dirt and away from catcher Geovany Soto(notes). Sanchez never stopped running from second and scored when Lilly was late covering the plate. Lilly drew an error for mishandling Soto’s throw.

Sanchez, hitting .315, had a run-scoring single an inning later and doubled following Steve Pearce’s(notes) double in the seventh.

“I came up in some big situations (Monday) and didn’t get the job done, so it felt kind of good to go out and get the job done,” Sanchez said.

The Cubs were shut out for the second time in three days and eighth time this season.

“I think we’ve forgotten how to hit, especially with men on base,” said manager Lou Piniella, whose team was 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position. “The problem is basically what it’s been all year, putting runs on the board. Until that gets solved, it’s a huge struggle.”

The Cubs finished 11-14 during a forgettable June, their first losing month since August 2007. Their June swoon included Piniella’s blowup with Milton Bradley(notes), seven extra-inning games, Bradley forgetting how many outs there were and throwing the ball into the stands and Soto’s apology for failing a drug test.

“I hope that everything happened now, it’s in the first half and in the second half everybody’s laughing and playing better,” Alfonso Soriano(notes) said.

With the Pirates leading 2-0, Soto and Mike Fontenot(notes) singled against Ohlendorf (7-6) with two out in the seventh. Soto briefly held up at second on Fontenot’s single to left, changed his mind and tried to advance but was easily thrown out by left fielder Moss.

“That’s a really bad play,” Soto said. “It’s a bad play, that’s all I’ve got to say about it.”

An inning later, John Grabow(notes) struck Soriano and Kosuke Fukudome(notes), and Derrek Lee(notes) grounded out after the Cubs put runners on second and third with none out.

Before that, Ohlendorf made his best start since holding Florida to two hits over seven shutout innings on April 20. He gave up four hits, struck out eight and walked none while limiting the Cubs’ middle three hitters—Lee, Jake Fox(notes) and Micah Hoffpauir(notes)—to one single in nine at-bats.

“I was telling everybody, I would not want to be facing Ross right now,” Andrew McCutchen(notes) said. “He really had his stuff working.”

Matt Capps(notes) pitched a scoreless ninth for his 18th save in 20 opportunities, finishing off a six-hitter.

NOTES: The Pirates went 14-13 during their first winning record in June since 1996 (15-12). … OF Jeff Salazar(notes) will join the Pirates from Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday. … The Cubs are 2-7 on a 10-game trip that ends Wednesday. … Tuesday was the 100th anniversary of the opening of Forbes Field.

Deborah P- hard to get "better pitchers", last I checked, Cubs led the league in "quality starts" (something like "3 or fewer earned runs per 1st 6 innings...more or less...). But, cubs did beat p'rats 2nite! 3.5 outta 1st (thanks Cards!) and 2.5 outta last...gotta play like we mean it, this homestand! Go Cubs.

I hear Sreet may be made available in trade (Colorado?)...would shore-up very questionable pen for Cubs... Also, in fairness, since I pointed out we aren't "far from first", we're also aaaawwwfffuullly close to last! 4.5 outta 1st, only 1.5 outta last! a p'rats win 2nite would leave our cubs 1/2 gm outta da cellar! its not like i haven't seen cubs there plenty in the past, but this WAS NOT SPOSED TO BE THAT YEAR!!! Sad that SF (w/o Barry "oh just stick me anywhere" Bonds) has a better record than Cubs?! The damn Reds our in front of us, and we sent em our "secret weapon"...Dusty Baker! The more time passes, the more I "look at Lou"... a "definition of insanity": when u do the same thing over and over again and expect a different outcome... THAT'S current Cub "logic"... if our SPs are delivering "quality starts", enuf to LEAD THE LEAGUE, u can't change that, that leaves the Pen, Closer & Batters. For the love of God: do SOMETHING!

As a Cubs fan, I fully admit that: a) The Cubs are playing bad ball, b) they are wasting quality starts, c) da pen (and probably closer) are very unreliable d) the "injury bug" and Soriano/Bradly are taking their toll, and lastly, e) The Cubs lifeless offense makes it appear we are only facing "Cy Young caliber" pitching. That said, niether Cards or Crew seem able to take a commanding lead in division and HOLD IT. See the "last 10 stats" of Cubs, Cards & Crew... it's like they are waiting to hand The Cubs the Division! With 11 games @ home b4 the break, IF they can capitalise, they would be poised to take lead/seriously contend in Division. I can't "get excited" yet, but Cubs far from "out of it"... Damn! I hope I don't kick myself for this post in August/Sept!

For my view on the Pirates go to kennskorner.mlblogs.com.
Pirates fans I feel your pain.
Hanrahan has great stuff but so far his career ERA is 5.30.
That won't get it done no matter what team you're on.

I am not a Pirate fan, but I feel sick for the fans. They keep trading away their players like candy. That management is pathetic. Too bad, the Pirates were a great team while I was in middle school (early 90s) when they won 3 straight NL EAST titles and each time almost made the WS. They won it all in 1979, a few others in the 60s and 70s. They are not no BUM orginization. They need a new management team that is committed to winning. Good luck to you guys, from a Brewer fan.

Morgan is a speedy, above average outfielder with a bum bat that has been lucky. Burnett has been lucky this year while Hanrahan is very underated and very unlucky with a bum Nats defense (.450 BABIP).. I would bet anyone here Hanrahan outperforms Burnett the rest of the year. The Pirates cleaned the Nationals clock in this deal.

the pirates keep trading their good players because those good players are really not that good and cannot sustain a winning team. Morgan was a nice surprise but is 29 and his avg will continue to drop the rest of the season.

Why do the Pirates keep trading their good players. First Bay, then McLouth, and then Morgan who has done well this year. It is one thing when you know you are not going to sign someone and make a trade but if this team is going to be good someday, then you need to keep some of your good players.

Hey look, the Cubs just need to start playing for each other, and not worry about what's going on in the division or all the hype about how they are struggling! The staff is too good, and the lineup is just as good as any in the majors. Once Aramis gets healthy they'll be all the more better. They need to get Samardzija back in the bullpen to get his confidence back, so that they have more consistancy in the pen. Keep battling and good things will start to happen again. Go Cubbies!

The games aren't even over tonight and we are already talking about tomorrow? Why do these idiots jump the gun with this stuff. And do we need a preview for every game, these dopes ought to just preview the series.
