Giants’ Lincecum dominates Cardinals with 2-hitter

ST. LOUIS (AP)—Tim Lincecum(notes) looked ready for a return trip to Busch Stadium in two weeks for the All-Star game. The St. Louis Cardinals could not touch him.

Lincecum threw a two-hitter for his third complete game of the season, all in his last four starts, in the San Francisco Giants’ 10-0 rout Monday night. Travis Ishikawa’s(notes) three-run homer for a 4-0 lead in the fourth was way more than the right-hander needed .

“The way Timmy’s been pitching lately, after the first run I felt pretty comfortable,” Ishikawa said.

Lincecum (8-2) is tied with teammate Matt Cain(notes) for the league lead in complete games and his 2.37 ERA is second in the NL after mastering the punchless Cardinals with his third career shutout and fifth career complete game. He needed only 95 pitches to match his career low complete game and finished off the Cardinals in a snappy 2 hours, 6 minutes.

He faced only two three-ball counts all night and didn’t walk a batter for the second time in three starts.

“Their tendencies against me were they don’t get too deep in the count,” Lincecum said. “Guys were swinging early and often, so I was just trying to give them pitches they couldn’t hit out of the park.”

Make that out of the infield. Giants outfielders handled only seven chances.

“He’s been on this roll for I don’t know how many starts,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “Tonight he did say it was one of his best games. I don’t think he had a stressful inning.”

The Cardinals were not arguing that point.

“He worked us over,” manager Tony La Russa said. “Everything looks the same until it gets to the plate.”

Brad Thompson(notes) (2-4) took the loss for the Cardinals, who have lost five of six while scoring three or fewer runs in all of the setbacks.

Lincecum retired the first 14 in order, the early perfection ending when Rick Ankiel(notes) lofted a soft broken-bat single to center with two outs in the fifth, then mowed down five more before Albert Pujols(notes) doubled off the left-field wall with one out in the seventh. Then, the last eight Cardinals went quietly.

“I think he smells that,” catcher Bengie Molina(notes) said. “He’s close to the end and he wants to finish the game.”

Pujols was the only runner to reach scoring position for the Cardinals, who have totaled two runs in two games since acquiring Mark DeRosa(notes) from the Indians.

Edgar Renteria’s(notes) three-run double capped a five-run seventh as the Giants batted around against rookie Clayton Mortensen, whose contract was purchased from Triple-A Memphis earlier in the day and made his major league debut. Only one of the runs was earned because of a throwing error by second baseman Skip Schumaker(notes).

Juan Uribe(notes) added his second homer of the season, and third in 30 career at-bats at 4-year-old Busch Stadium, leading off the eighth off Mortensen.

Lincecum’s eight strikeouts gave him the major league lead with 132 in 114 innings, and his 2.37 ERA is second in the NL. He’s been nearly perfect in four starts against the Cardinals, winning all of them with a 1.61 ERA.

Over his last eight starts, he’s 5-1 with a 1.27 ERA. He got an extra day of rest for this start and is 10-2 under that scenario.

Molina’s RBI single off Thompson in the first snapped an 0-for-12 slump, and Nate Schierholtz(notes) and Renteria singled with one out in the fourth ahead of Ishikawa’s fifth homer of the season for a 4-0 cushion. Uribe’s homer reached Big Mac Land in the third deck above the left-field wall.

Thompson, who has faltered a bit in his bid to stay in the rotation when Kyle Lohse(notes) returns from a forearm strain, allowed four runs in six innings. He tried not to let pitching against Lincecum bother him.

“You still have to go out there and throw your game,” Thompson said. “You can’t worry about what he’s doing. I see him out there, but I’m not worried about his line, what he’s up to.”

The Giants lead the majors with nine shutouts, including two straight counting a 7-0 win at Milwaukee on Sunday.

NOTES: Lincecum threw his first career two-hitter Sept. 18, 2008, at Arizona. … Giants manager Bruce Bochy said rookie Ryan Sadowski(notes), who worked six scoreless innings against the Brewers for his first career victory Sunday, earned a spot in the rotation. Sadowski replaced Jonathan Sanchez(notes). … Mortensen is the eighth Cardinals player to make his major league debut this season, and 14th rookie. … The Giants have homered in five straight games, totaling eight. … The Giants haven’t committed an error in a season-high nine games.

I am pathetic and a waste of human flesh. Damm you sound like my wife of 26 years. Hey Phil ?????? Say what.? Hey I have had alot of fun with you Giant fans today you are passionate about your team and i admire that. The truth is i like that the Giants and Rockies are playing good ball now .I have good ammo to shoot back at all those East Coast biased idiots especially The Phillies fans who think they have a great team.and think the West is weak. In Reality the West is the best and the Dodgers will be better because of it.

Pablo is very quick for his weight, so he could handle catcher. That's why they call him kung fu panda. But I would keep him at third.

Chris C "I love the Dodgers and Lakers win or lose. I have been listening to Vin and Chick for over 40 years."

That is admirable that you are SoCal faithful and have been listening for 40+ years. That means you must be around 45-50 years old at least.

What is not admirable is that you should be a grown man and you have come to this page to be an immature hater on the Giants.

I'm not going to try to dissuade you anymore...go ahead and post some more and tell any one of us Giants fans to "go put your pink panties back on and continue to insert that foriegn object up your hole." Haven't heard that one before. SO original. You are pathetic and a waste of human flesh.

Come on John until they are proven on the major league level it does not mean squat. They all have potential. I am talking right now John and the fact is they are still minor leaguers right now.I knew one of you would say Pablo Sandoval he is the only one I could think of. He is going to be a good one. I remember him from last year against the Dodgers. I could see he was a natural good stick. The only thing with him is where are they going to play him full time? I would not put him at catcher he is too fat and will wear down in the second half? Is he a good glove on the corner?

Chris C- I'm not talking last ten years, I'm talking right now. Buster Posey, Conor Gillaspie, Nick Noonan, and Roger Kieschnick. All showing major league potential. They are playing like J.J. Hardy and Prince Fielder did a few years ago when they were in the minors.

Chris C, ...... Listen we could go back and forth with this all day. If LA, and I say if, is younger it's only by a bit. It's not as much as you are making it sound so it's not an issue. We have 3 position starters that are 34 and 35. Everyone else is 32 and under. ....... To answer your question - Pablo Sandoval. You should have asked for two players because there is no one else. You're right about that.

All minor leauers on everyteam are being developed numb nuts that does not mean @#$%. We hear all the stories about how great a teams prospects are but the Dodgers are different they have a proven track record. Name me one position player in the last ten years to be a star in the majors that came from the Giants minor league system that actually played for the Giants? Well?

Hell yes the are a bunch of bandwagon fans in LA because they come from all over the Country and the World to live in So Cal the greatest place to live and the best sports franchises. Me personaly am not a bandwagon fan. I never liked the Raiders because they were not LA's team truly and the Rams were actually LA'S team. The only reason the Raiders won is because they came to LA. I love the Dodgers and Lakers win or lose. I have been listening to Vin and Chick for over 40 years. Man it was hard to take when chick died. He was like a friend that you 've known for years. I also root for the Clippers and you have to be loyal to do that. I was thinking about the 49ers and I knew you would get me on that one although it seems 5 is a high #. What do you mean born in the 70's that is 10 years idiot most carrers do not even last that long. Loney ,Kemp, Ethier, Martin, Billingsley Kershaw, Broxton, all in their mid twenties.Furcal even Hudson and Pierre are still in there early thirties. Manny and Blake are older but they compliment the younger players. Are you telling me the Giants are younger? BULL!!!

Hey Chris C.. you just describe how you LA fans are a bunch of Bandwagons!! Can't handle a losing team so LA sent them packing. The 49ers may not be in their glory days now but we sold out our games every time... that's called loyalty.

Chris C, ........ You must be using LA logic to say the Dodgers are younger. Your team has 4 position starters born in the 1970's and so do the Giants. The starting pitching is about the same too. Stop pulling stats out of your @ss and say that they are fact. ........ Also, you still don't get it. Winning the division MEANS NOTHING ANYMORE BECAUSE OF THE WILD CARD. In fact, the wild card has reached the WS 8 times this new century and won 3 of them. I did not pull that out of my @ss either unlike you.

Chris C - So in other words you admit that all LA fans are bandwagoners. Once they start losing, you guys quit. Your smart. By the way, 49ers:5 super bowls. Forgot about those, huh?

Hey idiot, once they get a little older, they will be brought up. What is so hard to understand about that? When they are very young, they are in the minors. Once they get developed, they will be called up.

I am not putting down Lincecum I think he is great. I feel sorry for him playing for the Giants. I cannot wait till he becomes a free agent and at the press conference he has for his new team he slips on a Dodger hat. LOL!!! Who cares about the Cardinals and Giants? Even though it is one sided it is always about the Dodgers and Giants.

If they are too young to play do not even bring them up fools. LA does not have a football team because we do not tolerate mediocrity in LA. We got the Raiders we won a Super Bowl and once Al Davis started losing it we sent them back to the land of losers. Csurf i am glad that you realize you have no chance at winning the division that says it all loser. That is the attitude all Bay Area fans have because they have always had losing teams inferior to LA. Now go put your pink panties back on and continue to insert that foriegn object up your hole.

wow ..why are you Dodger fans commenting here on a Giants Cards game? Lincecum is the Franchise, he will never be traded. Unlike some of you fools, San Fran - Bay Area is a huge market. easily top 7 in the Nation. Giants have the top 10 attendance in all of majors past 10 years, including the last 2 years when the Giants were horrible. Trust me, we could have gotten that cheater Manny if we wanted, but that is probably the best move we made by not signing him up. LA fell for the Manny trap and you know what, he is a great hitter, so if he helps you guys good for you. Next year, when Manny is done with his 2 year contract, watch the tantrums again. Leave us Giants fan in peace, we are just happy for a good young team and the best two pitchers in the majors Cain and Lincecum. Yes we may falter down the line and not win the division of the wild card, but the excitement is back in the Bay, and that is good enough to lift everyone and be positive for once. We obviously need few more pieces and at this point, I am very encouraged for the Giants to get it from the farm system, than pay players like Manny and Tex 140 million dollar contracts.

It's hilarious that you try to taint a dominant Lincecum victory with your meaningless drivel.

Thank you, csurf1962. I was wondering what he was talking about. The players in the minors are too young to play in the majors yet, they have to be developed, like Pablo Sandoval was. And like I said, Manny didn't anything when he played against us.

Manny waits for the big stage to shine. What are you thinking that he is a rookie trying to work his way to the majors? He has nothing to prove to anybody and he does not owe anyone an apology. He served his time and payed dearly in lost salary. If the Giants have so much talent in the minors why are they playing all these over the hill players on their major league roster? The Dodgers young players already have been to the NL Championship and along with Manny coming back they will win the World Series this year because experience is huge in sports and no one will remember Mannys strikeouts in the minors when he is hitting home runs in the World Series.

Chris C - Yeah, Manny is looking so great down in the minor leagues. Nice strikeouts. He was never much of a factor in any of the games we played against the dodgers anyway: 0 for 4s, 1 for 4s... And the Giants do have a lot of great talent not only in San Francisco, but they are loaded with future Giants on the minor league San Jose Gaints team. They have already developed Lincecum and Cain.
