Mariano Rivera earns 500th save, Yankees beat Mets

NEW YORK (AP)—Mariano Rivera(notes) has 500 saves—and one precious RBI.

Guess which feat he was most excited about.

On a New York night that belonged to baseball’s most unflappable closer, Rivera became the second reliever to reach the 500-save milestone when the Yankees held off the punchless Mets 4-2 Sunday for a Subway Series sweep.

He joined Milwaukee’s Trevor Hoffman(notes), who has 571 saves, as the only major leaguers with 500. The biggest surprise, though: Rivera drew a bases-loaded walk to add a ninth-inning insurance run.

“I had one thing in mind—just try to do something,” Rivera said, before expounding on his save. “Don’t get me wrong, it’s definitely special.”

Chien-Ming Wang(notes) won for the first time in more than a year and Rivera got four outs, securing the Yankees’ fifth consecutive victory, all on the road.

In a fun twist, the 39-year-old closer even contributed offensively. The Mets walked Derek Jeter(notes) intentionally to get to Rivera with two outs, but he’s proved to be no pushover at the plate. He fouled off a 2-2 pitch from Francisco Rodriguez(notes) before working out a walk for his first career RBI.

It was the third regular-season plate appearance for Rivera—and second in five days. With his teammates yucking it up in the dugout, he flied out against Atlanta on Wednesday, when he got save No. 498.

“He looks good up there,” longtime teammate Andy Pettitte(notes) said. “I think in Atlanta they gave him a take sign and he swung anyway.”

Mark Teixeira(notes) hit a two-run double off Livan Hernandez(notes) (5-3) in a three-run first, when the Yankees had two of their four hits.

The injury-depleted Mets managed five, their best offensive output of the three-game series. The Yankees took five of six games from their crosstown rivals this season, handing the Mets their first sweep in 13 series at their new home, Citi Field.

“He’s one of the premier closers in my time,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said about Rivera. “I wasn’t applauding him tonight, but you do have to applaud that.”

Rivera entered with two on in the eighth and went to a full count on Omir Santos(notes) before throwing a called third strike. The right-hander pitched a one-hit ninth for his 18th save in 19 chances this season.

“He’s the definition of consistency,” Jeter said.

After the final out, Teixeira handed Rivera the game ball and the Yankees poured out of the dugout to hug him near first base.

It was the 110th time Rivera has gone more than one inning for a save. And he’s done all this with one pitch for the most part—that searing cut fastball.

“I told him he’s the best ever. The best I’ve seen. Nobody can even compare,” Yankees catcher Jorge Posada(notes) said.

The Yankees (43-32) matched a season high at 11 games over .500.

Still struggling with his command, Wang (1-6) allowed four hits and three walks in a season-high 5 1-3 innings. He was pulled with a runner on second, but Phil Coke(notes) and Phil Hughes(notes) got the Yankees out of the sixth unscathed.

Hughes worked around a leadoff walk in a hitless seventh. Brian Bruney(notes) got two outs but walked two batters before manager Joe Girardi called on Rivera, whose first save came on May 17, 1996, against the California Angels when he got Garret Anderson(notes) to ground into a game-ending double play, closing out an 8-5 victory for Andy Pettitte and the Yankees.

Girardi and Jeter each had two hits and an RBI in that game.

Following a season-ending foot injury last June, Wang has been unable to rediscover the form that made him a 19-game winner in 2006 and ’07.

His previous win was June 15 last year in Houston and he was 0-3 with a 34.50 ERA after three starts this season, then went on the disabled list for nearly a month with weakness in the adductor muscles in his hips.

After coming back, Wang made three relief appearances before returning to the rotation June 4 against Texas. His last three outings have shown gradual improvement.

The Mets cut it to 3-2 in the fourth. Prized prospect Fernando Martinez(notes) snapped an 0-for-16 slump with an RBI double and scored on Luis Castillo’s(notes) two-out single.

NOTES: It was Rivera’s 18th regular-season save against the Mets. … Citi Field became the 26th ballpark in which Rivera has notched a save. … Johnny Damon(notes) didn’t start for the second consecutive game because of a flu bug that’s been going around the Yankees’ clubhouse. Melky Cabrera(notes) started in left field, but Damon entered in the sixth.

This is for Daniel. Did I strike a nerve buddy? I have facts about Clemens. What do you have. This is from an article written after his 300 win.

Major League baseball star pitcher Roger Clemens has threatened to boycott his eventual induction into the Hall of Fame if he is not allowed to go in as a New York Yankee.

Clemens, who recently reached a major milestone with his 300th career victory, said that after 20 years in the game, he wants to decide whose hat he'll wear when he goes in the baseball shrine. And he wants a New York Yankees cap on his plaque.

Clemens could also go into the Hall as a Toronto Blue Jay or a Boston Red Sox. He pitched 13 seasons for the Red Sox before joining Toronto for two seasons as a free agent and winning the Cy Young Award before asking to be traded.

But he became estranged from the Boston organization after general manager Dan Duquette described Clemens as being in the "twilight" of his career when he was allowed to leave the Red Sox as a free agent after the 1996 season.

Clemens is likely to make it into the Hall of Fame in 2009 if he retires as planned this year, but said unless he is allowed to be inducted as a Yankee, there could be a vacant seat at the ceremony.

Joe T- sorry to burst your bubble but that is a misconception on the part of Yankee fans. They would have hated for Clemens to don a Boston cap for his enshrinement. Instead he gets to stay out and suffer an embarassment because of his alleged steroid use which incidentally began when he came to New York. Have you been in the waters around there lately? Filled with all kinds of medical paraphrenelia. You see Joe T, I can also comment without being rude and using profanity. I'll just take it that this is part of your family not knowing how to rear a child properly. Tsk Tsk So typical. By the way have you looked at the standing tonight? Tampa has the same amount of wins as you. Be worried that your beloved Yankees may fall to third shortly now that they're not playing the Mets. Go Sox !!! AL EAST LEADERS

Yankee fans bragging about all those titles they won last century reminds me of Celtics fans bragging about winning the most titles in a row in the history of pro sports...Sure the Celtics may be the greatest dynasty of all-time, but it's so long ago that no one cares. The Yankees and Canadiens were great last century too but come on it's the 21st century, stop living in the past....

In the 100+ year history of MLB there has only been one team that has ever blown a best of 7 series when leading 3-0 and that team is the New York Yankees..The Yankees may have been the best team last century but this century (modern day baseball), they are the biggest choke artists of all-time...

Awww !! Did I hurt the little Yankee fans feelings? This is called a commentary for a reason. If you don't like what I write then don't read it. It is solely my opinion and no one elses. Get a little testy when the truth hurts? COLE2ROCKS, I am hardly testy...lol I see another victory tonight by Lester has increased our lead over the Yankees. Now on Thursday if your team can, need to win so that it doesn't become a full game in the standings. We'll be off and rooting for the "other" guys in case you wanted to know. KT- your Angels make an easy west division and then flop every season. I won't waste anymore time with them. Great Experience- I hardly "worshipped" Johnny Damon. He was a good player and he had a right to leave for an extra 10 million. But has he won a WS in NY ? LOL And finally Joe T- It was Clemens himself that said he wasn't sure whether he would wear a NY or B on his cap as he was considered for the HOF. I guess that's a moot point now isn't it? So you see Yankee fans I can comment with the best of them...lol Go Sox !!! AL EAST LEADERS...add another 1/2 game lead Yank-me's !

Daniel is a perfect example of why people hate Boston fans. 85 years of nothing, then a couple years of sukcess and the gloating never ends. Daniel is a Boston reject. This is the year the Angels knock the Red Sux out. GO ANGELS!!!

I've always been an Angel's fan, so of course I consider the Yankee's to be a roadblock to the Angel's success, but I have always liked Rivera. No nonsense; just goes out and gets it done. I hope I never find out he was on the juice.

Daniel, how can you call Damon a Red Sox reject? Your stupid team is so fickle it makes me sick. Unfortunately, I lived in MA for a short time - and Damon was like Jesus to you people. You WORSHIPPED him and the ground he walks on, and when he went to the Yankees your team and your whole town was devestated. How can you claim that you "rejected" him? That's such BS. If anything, he rejected YOU.

Actually, I saw the interview and Rivera was just laughing. Why would you post your admiration for Mo and then blast him like that? That's the infamous Boston flip-flopping that has discredited your minor organization. But I understand, Daniel, the Yankees are making you edgy. Did you read Joe's post below? Kind of sums it all up. Peace.

Daniel, I am not sure how you can call Clemens, Boggs, and Damon rejects. I mean after all Clemens won a Cy Young and a WS title with NY something Boston had not been able to do. And oh yeah so did Boggs. And for good measure both said they wanted Yankee caps on their HOF busts. So stick that up your Redsox Nation ass my friend. THE YANKEES WIN THEEEEEE YANKEES WIN.

cole2rocks- I was reading in the National Review that said Mariano Rivera was pissed 'cause Paps talked about going to the Yank-me's and was going to take over as the top closer. Rivera supposedly said that until he retired that Paps could go f*ck himself...lo, He also stated that he f*cked his kind in jail. So I guess he's a pooper scooper. Paps is locked up until 2011. Let's see what happens over the next 2 years. He could easily blow out his arm and have Tommy John surgery never to be the same again. I'm sure that the Yank-me's would still want him as they have a history of taking Red Sox rejects.i.e. Clemens, Boggs, Damon etc.,etc.,etc. Go Sox !!! AL EAST LEADERS

Love that dirty water....Boston you're my home!!!! Hey at least we BEAT teams that are sickly. Didn't some no-name with a 103 temp pick you guys apart yesterday? Just for the record, if we WANTED Papelbon we would simply outbid you. It's that easy for the greatest franchise in baseball. I know that you guys are feeling pretty bad right about now. As awful as we have been playing to be just 3 measely games back has to be a crushing weight on the Red Stockings. I tried to tell you not to get your hopes up. I feel so bad when we have to destroy your dreams. NOT!!! Peace.

cole2rocks- I'm not worried about next week. It's your team that has to. The're the ones playing a real team and not one depleted with injuries such as the Mets were. You realize other than the 9-1 rout, the other two were very close. But you did sweep so I will give credit where credit is due. I think K-Rod sucked yesterday and I think it was funny that Rivera, would get a rbi for a walk but hey what the heck. Papelbon won't be going anywhere. Nothing more than a tactic to boost his potential profitability in the free agent season. Boston will re-sign him only for the reason that Boston fans will kill management if they don't...lol I can't go into the waters there...too many needles have been found, not sure if they were A-Rod's throw aways or not. I heard that a few other Yankees might be looking for a new team next year also. Go Sox !!! AL EAST LEADERS

I already stated that we would be even by the end of next week and we just gained one. We are on a little streak here and Mo's passing that awesome milepost will probably keep us energized for a few more games. How did you like Papelbon saying he wants to be a Yankee? It's the same way you desperately want to come out of the Yankee fan closet!! Come on in. The water's fine! Peace.

A pair of firsts @ 39. He's had a great run as a reliever since '96, perhaps the best in baseball history and he's now 71 behind a rejuvenated Trevor Hoffman who looks as great as he ever has and his 600th save looks like it's going to be a breeze. How much longer Mo will pitch as a top flight reliever remains to be seen but viewing his post season stats as well as his regular season stats, they're as good as any.

To you I may sound like a Mets fan but I'm not. I'm from Boston where the tougher team is at. How come you couldn't win one game out of eight from us..
It's because we're not one of the weaker teams.
