Laird, Cabrera help Tigers win sixth straight, 5-3

DETROIT (AP)—Lou Piniella is ready to take a page out of his mentor’s book.

Three decades after Billy Martin pulled the Detroit Tigers batting order out of a hat, Piniella said he’s ready to try the same thing after his Chicago Cubs stranded 13 runners in a 5-3 loss to the Tigers Wednesday night.

“I might leave the couple guys that are doing their jobs in their places and draw out the rest of them,” he said. “We couldn’t be any worse.”

The Cubs have scored only seven runs in their last three games, leaving 31 runners on base in the process.

“We’re getting hits, but we’ve got to start driving guys in,” said Geovany Soto(notes), who had a solo homer for Chicago. “We’re all trying to make something happen, and it just isn’t.”

Chicago’s offensive woes, combined with homers from Gerald Laird(notes) and Miguel Cabrera(notes), helped the Tigers post their sixth straight win.

“Thank god we’re going to get them out of here before their bats get going, because they will,” said Tigers manager Jim Leyland. “We let them have way too many opportunities tonight.”

Zach Miner(notes) (5-1), the third of seven Detroit pitchers, picked up the win. Fernando Rodney(notes) finished for his 15th save in as many tries. The Cubs put the first two batters on, but Rodney retired the next three to end the game.

“Rodney was real wild to start, and that’s not good,” Leyland said. “He did a great job getting out of it, though.”

Rookie Rick Porcello(notes) allowed two runs and seven hits. He walked four in five-plus innings.

“I thought I did OK, battled out of some jams early,” said the 20-year-old Porcello. “I think the biggest thing was just to keep us in the game and give us a chance.”

Rich Harden(notes) (4-4) took the loss, giving up four runs and four hits in 5 1-3 innings.

“It was an ugly game and I was unhappy with my performance,” he said. “That’s all I have to say.”

Derrick Lee extended his hitting streak to a career-high 21 games with a seventh-inning single. It’s the longest hitting streak by a Cub since Jerome Walton’s 30-gamer in 1989.

Detroit took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on Cabrera’s 15th homer, but Soto tied the game with a solo shot in the fifth. The Cubs then loaded the bases on two singles and a walk, but Porcello stuck out Micah Hoffpauir(notes) to end the inning.

Laird put the Tigers back in front with a fifth-inning homer off Harden.

Porcello came out after a walk and a single to start the sixth, and Nate Robertson(notes) allowed a single to Kosuke Fukudome(notes) to load the bases. Miner struck out Soto before Mike Fontenot(notes) tied the game 2-2 on a fielder’s choice.

Harden walked a pair of batters in the Detroit sixth, and Lou Piniella brought in Aaron Heilman(notes) with one out. Slumping Magglio Ordonez(notes) hit a bloop single to right, loading the bases. One out later, Adam Everett(notes) beat out an infield single to give the Tigers the lead and Curtis Granderson(notes) walked to make it 4-2.

The Cubs loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, and Fox’s sacrifice fly pulled the Cubs within 4-3.

Carlos Marmol(notes) walked in a run in the eighth for the final margin.

NOTES: Placido Polanco(notes) had an odd at-bat in the third, bunting a ball off the visor of his batting helmet, then losing his grip on the bat, which sailed into the Tigers dugout. … Ordonez cut off his trademark long hair before the game, hoping to end a season-long slump that has seen him hit just two homers. He finished with two singles. “I was jealous—he has beautiful hair,” Leyland said. “I told him that if I had been there, I’d like to have picked it up and made a toupee.” … Joel Zumaya, who allowed an eighth-inning homer to Hoffpauir in Tuesday’s win, pumped his fist after striking out Ryan Theriot to end Wednesday’s eighth.

The Chicago Cubs should just fold the franchise because nobody wants to be their owner. What decent player wants to have all the pressure and stigma of having to be the one who is going to end a 100+ Year Baseball Curse. NOBODY. The players that are on this roster signed with the team is because they are in the twilight of their careers, no future and they are just there to collect money for early retirement. After 2014 when Soriano, the last of the big wasteful contracts are gone for good, the Cubs will just be another Pittsburgh Pirates, a team with history but no hope of ever winning anything because of incompetent managers, owners, GM's and players.

I say lets not wait until 2014, I say lets just have the Cubs forfeit the remainder of their games and stop being a franchise. Move the team out of Chicago and start all over completely from scratch. I am afraid that this is the ONLY solution to the Cubs woes.

#42, John- Did u read Stacies post, just below mine? comment was directed @ HER. She states "Cubs should kill themselves", sounds like a "non-cub-fan" to me...i fear ppl like her post only to "see her name in print". No reason to come to the "enemies site" to insult us, she can do it as much as she likes on a Tigers, Cards, Brewers, Sox site AND BE AMOUNG MANY WHOM SHARE HER OPINION. have a great day.

No mention of it in this article, but I was at the game, and the Tigers we're oh so close to pulling off a triple play in the second inning last night. If Inge had gotten a better throw off to second base aftre tagging third, it would have happened. Fun game to go too, the radar showed Zumaya hitting 101 on nearly every single fastball, with his last one hitting 102, and his change-up dropped as low as 79. Although he bobbled the ball a bit on one tough grounder to third, Inge played some fantastic defense last night. And Ordonez, I didn't notice his hair being gone his first 2 plate appearences, (we were sitting way up high down the left field line) and when he got on base with that bloop hit, I just assumed they replaced him with Anderson on the basespath and I wasn't paying attention, because I noticed the guy on first didn't have real long hair lol. Even his next time up, I didn't realize Ordonez was still in the game, because the guy at the plate had a very bright pale skinned neck shinning up at us. It wasn't untill after a couple of pitches I looked at the board, and then looked back at the uniform to realize it was still him in the game.

Tyler .... Yah there are alot of past moments in Tiger's History that younger men and women don't really understand.... I'm amazed that this small market team has been going strong for well over 110 years.... There was the Ty Cobb era..... I don't care what people say but Ty Cobb had a career .367 batting average....... 367.... but they say Ted Williams was the games best hitter.... hmp. Then there was the Al Newhouser and Hank Greenburg.... who had a great run at Babe's 60 spot with a Tiger's season record 58..... Of course there was the awesome 68 season.... when Denny Mclane became the last pitcher to win 30 games in a season and they outlasted the Cards to win the Series in 7.... beating the most formidable Pitcher Bob Gibson.... 84 was by far the most standard book winning season.... Do you know the records that team set? they broke out of the gate at the beginning of the season with a 35-5 record...... No other team in History has come close to winning 35 of their first fourty games..... I mean thats like top 5 NCAA basketball record area there.... Then they put it in cruise going 500 the rest of the season.... Got to the series and put the bomb on San Diego..... This crop of Tigers is starting to show some of the clutch hitting... good steady pitching and stellar defense that other championship caliber Tigers teams have shown....
Wish Granderson would steal more..... Wish Anderson would steal more too.... When will Polanco ever learn how to bunt? ***BYNOTE*** To you CUB FANS..... When is Pinella gonna light that kind of fire and desire in his players.... Pinella has always gone out there and fought for his team tooth and nails with the Umps.... With these Cubs he seems like he is just collecting a check and not really worrying about his players anymore.... I mean this man used to get steamed if a fly got in the way of a player hitting a homerun...... Where is the passion.... Where is the desire and fire..... Where is the chewing out, raving mad comments..... Well at least after last night he made a blast at his team.... pulling names out of a hat and see where u place them in the field... Hah..... Perhaps he should go out there and just say he's waiting for the team to show some heart..... Yah they swept the Indians but the Tigs aren't the Indians...... The Tigs swept the Indians too and then went home to get swept by Minnesotta.... It's the ebb and flow of baseball.... Hope the fire returns to the Cubs.... after today's game....

Cubs and Lou haven't learned anything last two playoffs. They are not going to win with these players. When the Cubs go against the slightly good pitcher, they could not hit. The last six playoff games showed us this already. They got swept. They are praying and hoping.....for over hundred years. Alfonso, Reed Johnson, Bradley, @#$%odome, even Aramis need to go.

golf rat... this is baseball, anyone who has played baseball knows how it IS all about superstition, you play these games and if you win, you dont' change a damn thing. Everyone knows that. How many players, jump over the white line when going in/out of the dugout. It may just be a mind game that players play with themselves but over 162 games and a career in the sport, anything that helps mentally will help the player. I love it all. Durham Bulls??? all about superstition and its GREAT. GO TIGERS, THINGS LOOK SO GOOD RIGHT NOW, KEEP BRINGING IN THOSE W's. 5 GAME LEAD BABY!!!!!!!!!!

Why is Marmol still in the Majors? His consistancy is just not there. Gregg isn't much better. Send them both to Iowa. Also, I bet Hendry is second-guessing his trade of DeRosa. WE REALLY MISS HIM!!!

I can't believe Mags cut off his hair! Thats superstition! Thats a load of crap! It isn't going to get him going, he's going to get himself going. Now if he does get it together, he'll think cutting his hair did it! Come on Mags, gtet your hair back! lol. Crosby lifted their conference trophy, just to "knock" superstition, and they won the Stanley Cup anyhow! A great move against superstition! Superstition is nothing but a load of CRAP!

You're exactly right bigbob, I'm also a die hard over 70 cub fan and these guys SUCK! I blame hendry for this mess he ruined the pitching staff. Both lazy ass corner outfielders should go in the fire sale. He also should have kept Blanco to put some pressure on our "one year wonder" catcher.
I have never been so dissapointed in a team in my life, Oh the hell with it, I'm going fishing!!

Time for the cubs to make some serious moves and not stupid ones like they did in the offseason. Get rid of Gregg (that guy shouldn't be a closer on any MLB roster!) The bullpen and starting pitching have an ERA around 4.00+. Then there's the Fonz batting .227, send him down to triple A or bench him, he's become a liability at leadoff or anywhere in the lineup. Milton Bradly.....did anyone actually think he would have good back to back seasons? Heck no, he was only playing for a contract. Could someone please tell me why they traded for Aaron Heilman? He straight up sucks and isn't good enough to be on a baseball team at any skill level. The cubs are in disarray and it's not going to end anytime soon.

Big Bob, I feel for you man. I am a life-long Tiger fan but a traditionalist at heart when it comes to baseball. Its unbelieveable how disappointing the Cubs have been. I love baseball and hate to see the Cubs go through this, but of course I am happy with the results of the last two games. I root for the Cubs when the Tigers aren't in it, just like I did for the Red Sox when they were going through their streak. Hope the Tigers meet the Cubs in the World Series this year.

Man! Cubs lose a couple when they were "in it"...the way they're hittin', looks like EVERY opposing pitcher is a Cy Young canidate! Cubs 1:15 w/RISP??? won't do in MLB, especially Interleague. if NLC not so "evenly matched", some will say "weak", Cubs could be "done". but, NLC IS, and we AINT (done). I agree, it gets HARDER to be a Cubs Fan when your "promised" a dominant team & get a struggling team instead...
