Fields hits 2 of White Sox’s 6 homers

CHICAGO (AP)—Josh Fields(notes) got what every baseball player who’s been sitting on the bench craves—a chance to play.

Breaking out of a slump while making a rare appearance in the Chicago White Sox’s starting lineup, Fields responded by hitting two of his team’s six homers Wednesday night in a 10-7 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“A much needed game,” Fields said. “We’ve been struggling at home and to come out of it and go off like that was good. Hopefully we didn’t get rid of all of it and saved some for tomorrow.”

Before his breakout Wednesday night, Fields had made just once start since June 8—four days after last year’s first-round pick, Gordon Beckham(notes), was called up and took over at third base.

Fields, who made just his third start of the season at first base Wednesday, has handled the demotion as well as he could, using the extra time to refine his swing with batting coach Greg Walker.

“The time off has given us a lot of time to do a lot of work,” Fields said. “Actually it’s nice to get out there—and I wouldn’t say produce—but see all the effects of the work you’ve been doing kind of come out.”

Fields entered the game in an 0 for 16 skid. He singled in his first at-bat, hit a two-run, tiebreaking homer in the fourth inning and added a solo shot in the fifth when the White Sox connected three times. He also earned another start in the series finale Thursday.

“It’s tough to sit on the bench for one game, let alone a week or two weeks and not really play and then come in and have a game like this,” said Chicago’s Paul Konerko(notes), who also homered on a hot summer night when the ball was jumping.

The White Sox built a 10-3 lead after scoring five times in the fifth, but the Dodgers cut the deficit to three on Matt Kemp’s(notes) three-run homer in the eighth off Jimmy Gobble(notes).

Gobble drilled Juan Pierre(notes) in the back with a pitch right shortly after Kemp’s homer and was replaced by Octavio Dotel(notes). Bobby Jenks(notes) pitched the ninth for his 18th save in 20 chances.

Entering the game with just a .217 batting average at home compared to .280 on the road, the White Sox finally showed some spark at U.S. Cellular Field. Another reserve, Jayson Nix(notes) also homered as did Alexei Ramirez(notes) and Jermaine Dye(notes).

Chicago’s six homers were one shy of the club record. The White Sox last hit six in a game on June 8, 2004, against the Phillies.

Gavin Floyd(notes) (5-5) gave up six hits and one earned run in six innings and got his first career win against the Dodgers in four starts.

Randy Wolf(notes) (3-3) allowed up three homers and had his shortest outing of the season, lasting just 3 1-3 innings.

“There is no way to candy-coat it. I stunk,” Wolf said. “It’s virtually impossible to look at yourself in the mirror and think you’re going to get big league hitters out when you’re hitting your spot 30 percent of the time. Frankly, I’m embarrassed with the way I pitched. … And when you’re awful, you deserve to get your teeth kicked in. And that’s what I got.”

Konerko hit a solo shot in the fifth off reliever Cory Wade(notes) to make it 6-3. And after singles by A.J. Pierzynski(notes) and Brian Anderson(notes), Nix delivered a three-run shot to deep left, his fifth of the season. Nix got the start against the left-hander Wolf in place of Chris Getz(notes).

James McDonald(notes) relieved Wade and after getting one out, he gave up Fields’ second homer of the game and third of the fifth inning.

Dye’s two-run homer made it 3-all in the third.

The Dodgers feasted on White Sox mistakes in a three-run second inning. Casey Blake(notes) walked and moved up on an infield out and scored on Mark Loretta’s(notes) RBI single. A walk to James Loney(notes) at the end of a 12-pitch at-bat and an error on Beckham loaded the bases.

Loretta scored on Pierzynski’s passed ball and Loney came home when Chicago shortstop Ramirez dropped Pierre’s liner for another error, making it 3-1.

Ramirez hit a solo homer in the first.

NOTES: Fields now has five homers this season. He hit 23 in 100 games in 2007. He now has three multihomer games in his career. … The Dodgers hadn’t surrendered six homers in a game since Aug. 2, 2001, against the Reds.

If you root for the Dodgers your manhood will be doubted by the women in your life, children will beat you up, old ladies will spit on you, your mom will hate you, and small dogs will attack you. They are an awful, awful team. If you don t want to heed my warning that s fine, some of you like to learn the hard way, but rooting for the Dodgers will leave you alone, dying in the gutter while your girl/family leaves you for a guy who isn t so dumb that he would root for a team that is this bad. Taking someone to a Dodger game in LA is no different then punching them in the face, eating their pets, and then selling their family into slavery. A friend of mine loves the Dodgers, he also hates women and dolphins. Do you really want to be that guy?

ChiCub fans are even funnier... have not won 1 world series... but still thinks they are the best team because they have a ribbon for best fan attendence. I swear I thought the objective was to win a ring but leave it to a delusional Cubs fan...

chiSox fans are funny, they win one game and they think they could win it all. If you want to win you could start by not having Ozzie Guillen not talking s#@t about your team.

Like I said (FIRST POST)... to you non-Sox believers, took todays game, will take tomorrow and after that an easy sweep of the Scubs!!

What u gotta understand is that when the Sox lose, (that recent lost to the Cubs a perfect example being up by 4 runs in 8th inning) they usually beat themselves which explains why they hover around a near 50%... this team is potent lookin a lil like the 05' Sox... if this teams chemistry stays strong, pitching stay consistent ...Its a wrap... they will be chasing the pennant...

and God dont let us get a healthy Carlos Quentin... ohhhh boy!!!

Yeaa, I'm sorry the Dodgers dont really impress me Manny or no Manny, while they play in that sucky NL.

Hell yeah, way to go ChiSox, now lets carry it over to tomorrow, Richard needs a quality start to keep his spot on the starting rotation, so expect him to at least put out a good effort, he will probably at least pitch 5 decent innings, in hopefully a win, tomorrow again I think will be up to the bullpen, if the Sox can put damn good damage on the ball again, and keep cranking them out like we used to, expect a high scoring game...Go ChiSox!

ChiSox have a lot to prove these next couple of games, either they will play to their full potential and at least take one if not, hopefully, two, or they will falter and fall, and prove everyone else right. That we are just a team that can't produce runs at home, you can't win a division, little lone a Championship when you can't win at home. .219 is a horrible batting average, for a player or a team, and if you are batting .219, you'd better be hitting home runs and triples and doubles and hitting in a lot of RBI's with those few hits, but the Sox just can't seem to find a way to hit, at the juncture in their own facility, and thats just too freaking weird, hopefully they can start swinging the bat better, and soon, there is still a long way, but we need to start getting it done soon, or Detroit will be to far away, and they're not slowing down anytime soon...Lets go ChiSox, and start winning at home, Floyd will probably do good tonight, it will be up to the O. to get it done, my prediction: both starting pitchers will do great jobs, and probably work through six plus innings, and it will be up to the Bullpens of both teams who will probably decide this one, it could be a high scoring game, but doubted, its either going to be
ChiSox 1, Dodgers 17 if the Sox cant get it started, or Chisox 4, Dodgers 2 and the Sox finally start playing some D. and O. at the same time at home, and thats all I have to say about that...Go Sox!

Dodgers should be able to sweep the series, like you guys said its true that the sox can hit homers but they dont have great averages... which the dodgers dont hit much homers but have great averages so in the long run i believe randy wolf can win he just has to hang in there kuroda did a great job last night and as long as the pitching stays well the hits and runs will be produced.

I have not been impressed with Randy Wolf. They say he's a victim of the no-decision, but he has been "walking the tightrope" lately. The Sox have powerful bats, I'm a bit concerned about this game....
but sorry Moe, Billingsley will shut down the Sox tomorrow afternoon. I love the fact that I can catch the first three innings of tomorrow's game on my lunch hour.....
