Kuroda pitches Dodgers past White Sox

CHICAGO (AP)—On the night Manny Ramirez(notes) started playing ball again, the Los Angeles Dodgers showed why they haven’t missed him very much.

“We play the same way every day,” catcher Russell Martin(notes) said after Tuesday’s 5-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox. “Our pitching has been great. You can’t really get better than what we’re doing right now.”

James Loney(notes), whose two-run homer backed Hiroki Kuroda’s(notes) outstanding pitching, disagreed.

“I don’t think there’s a team that (wouldn’t want) Manny,” Loney said. “When he comes back, it will just make us that much better.”

That’s a scary thought. The Dodgers have been the top team this season both with and without their star slugger, who on May 7 was suspended 50 games for violating Major League Baseball’s drug policy.

While Ramirez was going hitless in two at-bats for Triple-A Albuquerque in his first game since the suspension, the Dodgers were improving to 47-24. They are 26-16 so far without Ramirez. Each mark is an MLB best.

Kuroda (2-3) made winning without Manny look easy, allowing four hits in 8 2/3 innings.

He gave up only Paul Konerko’s(notes) second-inning homer and Jermaine Dye’s(notes) single until there were two outs in the ninth. Kuroda then allowed two more hits, including Dye’s RBI single, before Jonathan Broxton(notes) earned his 18th save by striking out Jim Thome(notes).

“He was terrific as far as his command,” manager Joe Torre said. “He’s not going to beat you with his velocity. He’s going to beat you with his location and movement. He was throwing a lot of strikes. It was nice to watch.”

Kuroda fanned nine and walked none in outpitching John Danks(notes) (5-6), who again received little support at U.S. Cellular Field. Chicago is last in the AL with 119 runs in home games and has scored two runs or fewer in six of Danks’ seven home starts.

Danks allowed three runs on only three hits—all in the first two innings— and retired 17 of the final 18 batters he faced over seven innings, but the White Sox lost for the ninth time in their last 12 home games.

“It isn’t my department,” Danks said of the offense. “My job is to try to keep us in the game. But our guys know how to hit—and hit a lot. They are proven. It’s only a matter of time before our guys get going.”

Orlando Hudson’s(notes) RBI double gave the Dodgers a first-inning lead and Loney’s fifth homer made it 3-0 in the second.

Konerko’s home run cut the Dodgers’ lead to two and that’s how things stayed until the eighth, when Casey Blake(notes) hit a two-run single off reliever Octavio Dotel(notes).

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was ejected by home-plate umpire Joe West earlier in the eighth for arguing ball-and-strike calls. It was Guillen’s second ejection this season and 18th of his career.

“That’s the weakest ejection I’ve ever had,” Guillen said. “I asked where the pitch was, he didn’t like my question and he kicked me out of the game. He big-leagued me. I’m not going to say much because it might cost me one day without pay and one day without my ballclub.”

NOTES: The Dodgers snapped a 50-year losing streak on Chicago’s South Side. They suffered a three-game sweep in 2005—the teams’ only other meeting here after L.A. beat the White Sox in the 1959 World Series. … The Dodgers are 23 games over .500 for the first time since they ended the 2004 season 24 games over. … Thome, the Chicago DH who was limited to pinch-hitting duties in the previous eight games at NL parks, went 0-for-4 in his return to the lineup.

David F- "LA Sucks" shows up everywhere (except his/her teams OWN site). he/she never posts anything intelligent, just "insults". My dog likely knows more about baseball just by sleeping on my newspapers Sports Section! Careful, he/she could be a "child", so I never say anything really "bad" bout LA Sucks. I understand, his/her comments are about as "vaulable as a fart in a crowded elevator", yet best not to antagonise "it". Likely, by end of year, LA Sucks will a) jump on some teams bandwagon "just in time" &b) insist he/she has been a "life-long fan"! Think of LA Sucks like the nite your gonna go on a date with the most beautiful woman of your life...then...30 mins before you meet...you get a "cold-sore" on your lip! NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT...but DON'T "pick at it"...it'll GET WORSE!!! :)

This Dodgers team has been impressive. Badmouth them all you want, but the fact is Colorado has won 18 of 20 and they're STILL 10 games behind. That ought to tell you something.

The White Sox are always whining about umpires. The pitch from Thornton to Hudson was outside by 4 inches. The unprofessional hillbilly in the booth (Hawk) whines that every call goes against the White Sox. He is the ultimate suck-up for the Sox. Since he has a bad reputation in baseball, the only way Hawk can keep his job is to continually suck up to the White Sox. Perhaps he should concentrate on his 4 oldest children that he disowned.

Torre has proved again and again that pitching, hitting and fielding in whatever order wins 65% or more of the time. With Manny all the others are going to get better pitches to hit and then what.......This time reminds me of the 60's team except they can really hit the living hell out of the baseball. Pierre is almost as good at stealing as Wills was and the hitting stands second to none when everything is running right. GO DODGERS Keep it up from now until late OCTOBER.

#24 - thanks for correcting my trade history. I forgot Konerko went to the Reds first. He wasn't there long either. Shaw was a decent closer, he was adequate until Eric Gagne came onto the scene. Absolutely agree that the Pedro Martinez for DeLino DeShields has to be THE worst Dodger trade ever. The trade that I hated to see even more was the deal that sent Mike Piazza to the Marlins, but for the team, it actually benefited the Dodgers.

#2 - Konerko was barely a Dodger before they gave him up for next to nothing.

I would not called Shaw nothing for Konerko but the worst one was Pedro for Delino.

The question now is with Kuroda getting into a groove and Manny coming back: What are the dodgers going to trade Juan Pierre for? More pitching or some up and coming prospects and another glove for the outfield?

Joe West is the most arrogant, ineffective and obnoxious Umpire that's been in professional baseball for a long time. When will the League wake up and get rid of him. He should stick to "TRYING" to write cowboy songs

I posted a couple of comments on Sunday evening, after the Dodgers beat the Angels for the second time in two days and heard alot of negative stuff from the Angels fans. Where are they now? Let's give the LA Dodgers their due....they are playing very well (w/o M. Ramirez) and deserve a little respect. Of course, you folks who are not fans of the Dodgers will have nothing nice to say and should not (in that case) say anything. Keep it going, Blue! Nice game Kuroda!
