Stammen, Nationals really dampen Yankees’ day

NEW YORK (AP)—Craig Stammen(notes) and the Washington Nationals really dampened the New York Yankees’ day.

After waiting out a 5 1/2 -hour rain delay at the beginning, Stammen earned his first major league victory, Julian Tavarez(notes) provided key relief and the last-place Nationals beat New York 3-0 Thursday night in the first game without a homer at the new Yankee Stadium.

“When you have three meals at the ballpark before you start the game, it’s been a long day,” Nationals manager Manny Acta said. “It was worthwhile.”

Boosted by Ryan Zimmerman’s(notes) three hits and a bunch of nifty plays, Washington posted its first two-game winning streak since taking three straight May 7-9. Behind Stammen (1-2), the Nationals became the last team in the majors to pitch a shutout this season.

Unsure whether there would be a game, Stammen bided his time by reading a book, watching games on TV and eating lunch. Hours later, he learned he would be pitching.

“I guess it started right on time for me,” he said.

Maybe it was the damp air, or perhaps it had more to do with Stammen’s neat 6 1-3 innings, but nobody managed to clear the fences. There had been a whopping 119 home runs through 34 games at the majors’ newest launching pad.

Scheduled to start at 1:05 p.m., the game did not begin until 6:31 p.m. A postponement seemed unlikely because the teams shared only one mutual off-day the rest of the season for a possible makeup.

There is no official record of the longest rain delay in big league history, but this certainly ranked high at 5 hours, 26 minutes. The start of a pennant-race game in 1999 between Cincinnati and Milwaukee was delayed 5 hours, 47 minutes.

The call on whether to play or not rested with the Yankees.

“I was in the loop at all times,” New York manager Joe Girardi said. “When we were supposed to start and couldn’t, at 2, 3, 4 or 5, all of those times.”

Said umpire crew chief Charlie Reliford: “It was their decision entirely. I had no input whatsoever.”

About 10,000 people were sprinkled around the ballpark for the first pitch. When the Yankees announced fans could move down, there was a stampede toward the $2,625 seats in the front row. By the end, the upper deck and bleachers were virtually empty.

Later, the Yankees said all stubs for the game—used or not—could be redeemed for tickets or merchandise this season or in 2010.

Despite the messy weather, it was an extremely crisp game. No pratfalls, no errors and several sharp plays on both sides.

Yankees center fielder Brett Gardner(notes) made one of the best, tracking down Austin Kearns’(notes) long drive in the eighth. The back of Gardner’s head whiplashed against the plexiglas wall, and he was down on the warning track for several minutes after getting the wind knocked out of him. A woozy Gardner was driven off on a golf cart.

“The body feels fine. I just have a little headache,” Gardner said.

The Nationals’ problematic outfield produced two gems. Left fielder Willie Harris(notes) made a diving catch on the warning track to rob Alex Rodriguez(notes), and Kearns unleashed a perfect throw from right to cut down Nick Swisher(notes) at second.

Stammen worked around six hits, walked none and struck out two in his sixth big league start. The 25-year-old rookie sent the Yankees to their sixth loss in nine games.

Tavarez relieved with the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh. He retired pinch-hitter Derek Jeter(notes) on a grounder, with shortstop Cristian Guzman(notes) skidding to his left to make the stop. Exactly four years ago, Jeter hit the only grand slam of his career.

Mike MacDougal(notes) pitched the ninth for his second save. On Wednesday night, he closed out the Yankees for his first save in the majors since 2006.

Zimmerman doubled twice and singled off Joba Chamberlain(notes) (3-2). He scored twice and drove in a run as the Nationals took a 3-0 lead after five innings.

NOTES: Jeter did not start for the second straight game because of a sore left ankle. … Washington 2B Ronnie Belliard(notes) wasn’t feeling well and was scratched from the starting lineup. … The game took 2 hours, 59 minutes.

AVI - If you knew how to read you would have known that the question wasn't who was the most responsible for winning the Championship; the question was how many home grown players were on the roster that season. I answered his question. Leave the conversation to the adults please.

Aww, that's cute the way Red Sox Nation comes together when they get their fur wrinkled. I see there is still some confusion about the 04 team. Nomar was traded mid-season and Youk was in the minors at the time. But I forgot about Nixon. Probably because he was hurt most of the season. So, yes, congrads. You did have one home grown player on the team that won the World Series! But hey, at least the spelling is getting better with some of you. I would have responded to Nathan's post, but I just about had a seizure trying to read his little rant. I've never seen so many spelling errors in such small sentences. Holy sh*t, what are you, 6? Do your parents know you are using their computer today Nathan? Yes, Sox are in first and the Yankees (sorry, Yank-mes [that's co clever] ) are in second place in June. Congrads again. Thanks for proving my point. Keep obsessing Boston!

With all the crowing the Red Sux fans are doing these days about how much the Yankees "suck" - I can't help but notice that we are still only 3 games behind you. That's NOTHING. Get over it - yes, they should have easily kicked the crap out of the Nationals, but they didn't. Oh well, move on. Don't try to make more out of it than it's worth or else you might be eating your words when you have a bad series against someone at the bottom of the heap. Which you will, because everyone does. That's baseball.

Seriously... why are the Red Sux fans so obsessed with the Yankees? Get on your own message boards... it's just creepy how much you guys care about the Yankees wins/losses.

To ALL Red Sox supporters...please stop wasting your breath on these Yank-me fans. They are obviously jealous of our success. Save it to root for a winning team this year...the Red Sox. Oh and by the way although we try to educate, it's impossible to with anyone from the Bronx. Bottom line is...Red Sox 8 New York 0...and Red Sox 1st ..New York 2nd. Way to go Red Sox leaders of the AL East. Go Sox !!!!!!!

...I almost wrote off all these idiots on this venue..My hat off to you for your input.I've been a RED-SOX fan since 1954 and suffered tremendiously...But the sox always worked their farm system much better than the Yankees..Ellsbury,Youk,Pedroia and the young pitchers..I really think the typical Yankee fan is envious for the great job managment have done the last few years...

Yeah because Trot Nixon won them the world series. Garcioparra was hurt as always and Youkilis didn't do crap. You just named three homegrown players who were non-factors. Way to educate.

To that ole baseball genius #87 "Brad"

Trot Nixon, Garciaparra, and Kevin Youkilis were all home grown players on the Red Sox roster that season .. (among others) Jason Varitek was traded as a minor leaguer and is a career Red Sox but I know that is not the question..

I don't understand how you can compare what the Red Sox do to how the Yankees handle their business .. The Red Sox get the best player to fit their system of play; the Yankees buy the best player available .... Its like this: The Red Sox are the best team the Yankees are the best collection of players in the league .. Team always wins !!! Look at your record vs Boston this season ..

I would glad to educate you further on baseball if you wish ... Let me know.

It's also interesting to note that the Yank-me's waited 5 1/2 hours to play a game that they would eventually lose. The Umps called Boston's game after rain in the 5th inning..just enough to give the Sox a lost although had they played would probably have won as they score the most in late innings...i.e. 6-9. Umps are from NY obviously...lol

Just a thought......I know that I am appalled at the salaries of professional athletes, as a fan since the 60's, the thing that boggles my mind is that the fans would still go to the ballpark if these athletes made 1/2 of what they currently make, at the same time the fans would save money because everything associated with the sport would be 1/2 the cost, the starting salary of a MLB ballplayer was $43,500 in 1984 and is now $400.000 which is the same as the President of the USA, if the logic is to pay these players for their talent, then what is that saying about our President ! Bud Selig makes 18+ million for being the commissioner of MLB, I guess his job is more important then the President's also ! As a Pirate fan, in today's age the Pirates would not be able to keep Roberto Clemente & Willie Stargell, because salaries have gotten out of control with REALITY, the Pirates market hasn't changed very much since these players played, but all I hear is MARKET is the reason the Pirates haven't won, BULL**** ! In 1992 we had the Roberto Clemente of our time (Barry Bonds) who should of retired a Pirate, but the outrageous salaries that are being thrown around these days is the real issue ! Each team in MLB, except a few goes through the same thing that the Pirates have gone through, except they were fortunate to pick the right players in the draft or get the right players trading away a player they knew that they could not sign, in today's market the Pirates will never have a player like Roberto Clemente, and that is a SHAME, I know that when I was growing up as a kid in the 60's, I idolized Roberto Clemente & would of been devastated to have lost him to another team because of money, I think it is wonderful that DereK Jeter will probably retire a Yankee, but the Yankees and their open checkbook have bought many Roberto Clemente's from other teams & kids idols are lost and we as parents have to explain that it is all because of money and our team could not afford to have him anymore ! The Pirates have been in the league since 1887 and I am getting tired of people saying that the Pirates don't deserve a team when we supported a team for all those years, we have won 5 World Series titles, and although we haven't won since 1979, there are millions of Pirate fans across this nation that love the game of baseball, Why is it that there are 30 teams in the league but the 30 teams don't get the same coverage ? You wander why TV ratings stink, start showing other teams besides the same ones that are on all the time ! A salary cap would force all teams to be EQUAL ! I don't want to hear that it will not work because of the minor leagues because you can have a separate SALARY CAP for that also ! There our millions of fans from all markets that deserve to have this done, too all the teams that can afford their players and only lose them because you don't want them anymore then put yourself in our place and see how you would feel ! I also like to use the scale of salaries in 1984 to your job, if you made $10/hr in 1984, then you would be making $100/hr or $208/000/yr with MLB standard, the average fan would not be outraged if those conditions were REALITY, !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love it when Red Sox fans come to the Yanks message board to run their mouth. Just goes to show that no matter how good or bad the Yankees are, Boston fans are still obsessed with them. Glad to see you guys are over that whole Inferiority complex with all things New York! Ha-ha. It's also great how you still whine about the Yankees trying to buy their rings. And what exactly did the Sox do? The same damn thing. Look at your 2004 roster. Not one player on that team was a home grown product. It's a fact, look it up. Go ahead, I'll wait here for a few minutes while you get yourself educated on baseball. So, you see Boston fans, you have become what you hate the most: An over-priced team that is buying their wins. You started copying the Yankees and guess what? You started winning! Welcome to the club a$$holes. Not shut the f*ck up and go put on your cute little pink hats and hold hands while singing your little pedophile song, Sweet Caroline ( a song about a 10 yr old girl). What a bunch of clowns.

The old adage goes...never say never. Simply put it's a "what if" ? But then I would understand why you as a Yank-me fan would say such a thing. I think you were saying that the Yank-me's would sweep the Nationals last week also. Am I correct? LOL

Guess the problem wasn't Torre was it. This team needs a kick in the a$$.
Worst team in baseball outclasses them easily. No drive - no fire - no care in the world from these Yanks. When do you suppose the Yanks will get a real manager. Girardi seems more suited for politics than managing. Somebody should clue him in that you can use a DH in interleague play when the game is in your home park. Matsui ain't it but keep him in there he might start to hit some month. Where is Shelly Duncan when you need him. Oh that's right banished to Scranton where he is hitting the cover off the ball. Can we have at least 1 game where Swisher doesn't get thrown out on the base paths. Why in hell is A-Rod still batting clean up. I can't use the the word hitting there cause he doesn't. Look he just left 2 more men on base. Bad baseball as well as bad managing. This team looks like a bunch of bush leaguers. Good thing George isn't around or heads would be rolling.
