NEW YORK (AP)—A flood of memories washed over John Lannan(notes) as he stood on the mound at Yankee Stadium and listened to the crowd cheer for his favorite team growing up.

This was one unforgettable night for the Long Island left-hander.

Lannan pitched into the ninth inning in his first career start against the New York Yankees, leading the Washington Nationals to a much-needed 3-2 victory Wednesday.

“The night belonged to him,” Nationals manager Manny Acta said.

Lannan (4-5) allowed two runs and four hits in 8 1-3 innings, hurting one of his hometown teams for the second time in two weeks. He beat the New York Mets 7-1 on June 6, tossing a four-hitter for his first career complete game.

“He threw the ball in and out, mixed his pitches up, threw strikes,” Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez(notes) said.

Johnny Damon(notes) hit a leadoff homer in the ninth and Mark Teixeira(notes) singled with one out, sending Lannan to the dugout and the Yankee Stadium crowd into a frenzy. Mike MacDougal(notes) replaced Lannan, who was born in Long Beach and wouldn’t even hazard a guess when asked how many games he went to at the old stadium.

“My memories of ‘Lets go Yankees’ chants there, and just to be on the mound during that was unbelievable no matter what happens,” he said. “I’m just grateful for the opportunity I got to pitch here and I’m glad we came out with a win tonight.”

Pinch-runner Brett Gardner(notes) stole second and third on consecutive pitches with MacDougal on the mound before Rodriguez walked. But MacDougal got Robinson Cano(notes) to ground into a game-ending double play, pumping his fist after second baseman Anderson Hernandez(notes) threw to first.

It was MacDougal’s first save since July 16, 2006, for Kansas City at Detroit. Cano fouled off four 2-2 pitches before hitting a tailor-made double-play ball to shortstop.

“It should be a big booster because he saved a huge ballgame in New York in front of the Yankees and in a tough situation,” Acta said. “Cano has been hitting everything right on the nose.”

Cano hit a leadoff homer in the fifth for New York’s first hit and Chien-Ming Wang(notes) turned in a decent start for the Yankees, who played without Derek Jeter(notes). The All-Star shortstop sat out with a sore left ankle after leaving New York’s 5-3 victory over Washington on Tuesday night after seven innings.

Jeter went for an MRI before the game and checked out fine. He could be back in the lineup for Thursday’s series finale.

Adam Dunn(notes) homered and Nick Johnson(notes) hit a two-run triple for the Nationals, who had lost 16 of 19. Washington improved to 7-24 on the road.

“I forgot how happy I could be after a baseball game,” Dunn said. “This is how it’s supposed to be and we just need to continue to find ways to win the game and not lose them.”

Wang (0-5) likely bought himself at least another turn in the rotation with his best start of the year. The right-hander allowed three runs and six hits in a season-high five innings one day after his wife, Chia-Ling Wu, gave birth to their first child, a 7-pound, 12-ounce boy named Justin Jesse.

“I did see a more confident guy and he was smiling,” said manager Joe Girardi, who wanted to watch a replay of Wang’s outing before saying for sure that he would remain a starter.

Wang got a tough break in the fifth when Cristian Guzman(notes) reached on an infield single—he appeared to be out at first on a close play. Johnson followed with a sinking liner to left-center. Center fielder Melky Cabrera(notes) tried to make a diving catch but the ball got past him and rolled to the wall.

Willie Harris(notes) and Guzman scored easily to give the Nationals a 3-0 lead, but Wang buckled down to strand Johnson at third.

Wang’s tough sinker appeared to be working—he recorded 10 outs on grounders. He said he felt better and hoped to remain in the rotation.

“We wanted to see some good things out of him and we did,” Girardi said. “The ground-ball outs is a real good sign.”

Wang entered 0-4 with a 21.60 ERA in five starts this season. He spent about a month on the disabled list with weakness in the adductor muscles in his hips and made three relief appearances before returning to the rotation June 4 against Texas.

NOTES: New York had been 23-0 when allowing three runs or fewer, the only unbeaten team in the majors in that category, and had won 33 in a row dating to last year, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. … Dunn’s drive was the sixth homer in the majors this season on a 3-0 count, according to STATS LLC. Only three of Dunn’s 296 home runs have come on 3-0 counts.

Dmitry post # 48 states"The team that holds the record for most wins in a season (1998 Yankees) went 114-48. Here is another knowledgeable Yankee fan that's biased for his team. Try the Seattle Mariners hold the record for most wins in a season. They were 116-46 in 2001 so Yankee fans get your facts straight before you try to claim another record. Unless you were thinking that this century doesn't count because you haven't won any WS.

I gotta give some credit to Lannan. He worked quickly, stayed away from the middle of the plate, and kept the Yankee bats off balance. The kid reminds me a lot of a young Jamie Moyer/Tom Glavine.

    GO SAINTS!!!!

The people who make comments like "how can a team like the Yankees lose a game to a team like the Nats" obviously know nothing about baseball. Any team can beat any other team any given night; even the best teams lose close to half of their games every season routinely. The team that holds the record for most wins in a season (1998 Yankees) went 114-48. Some of those 48 losses were to teams with very bad records... draw your conclusions.

Wow ! How bad do the Yankees suck. The highest payroll in baseball and they can't even handle the Nationals ? They have been beyond lucky with 22 come from behind wins. When the law of average settles in you New Yorkers can enjoy an early offseason again.

It is pretty sad when the big bats that the Yankees are paying millions of dollars to - cannot produce even a base hit when they need it. All A-Rod needed to do last night was a base hit, and it would have tied up the game.

Unfortunately, we cannot blame this loss on Wang. I'm still not a Wang supporter, and would rather see him in the bullpen - but last night's loss cannot be blamed on him.

I am a true blue Yankee fan, and it just infuriates me - that the prices of the seats are so high because of the high Yankees payroll - and the fans get to see A-Rod walk instead of hit (a base hit is all that was needed to tie it up and keep Yankees in the game).

I am embarrassed to be a Yankee fan today - when they cannot even beat the Nationals with the tying run on third and the highest paid ball player at the plate - NO EXCUSE is acceptable...NONE!

Bad baseball, Bad managing, Do the Yankees actually know that they can use a designated hitter in these games. Matsui ain't it. Time to wake up and play some ball.

Everyone insults each others' teams on these boards during baseball season. I know it's typical, but let's try to enjoy the game. Season's almost half over, and before you know it, poof. A long, long winter awaits. .........sucks.

lousey, lousey baseball if they played the game like it was meant to be played they would have won that game. for instance how about bunting up the first base line??? would have prevented the double play and at least tied the game and give yourself a chance to win. that to me is very difficult to watch...

was anyone else shocked that girardi did not send Arod in that spot to steal second and eliminate the double play possibility.
they may have walked cano then. but at the same time with the bases loaded a walk would then tie the game.

Honestly, what could you do? Up until the 9th, we could barely touch Lannan, he pitched a great game. I agree that Girardi not having A-Rod steal 2nd was a factor. You've gotta be aware of that situation, and even if he's caught stealing, it gives Gardner a chance to go home on the throw. You can't allow a double play scenario with 1 out in the 9th, it's uncalled for.
I did see signs of the old Chien-Ming Wang. It may be the Nationals, but they've got some solid batters there, and only two real mistakes cost him all 3 runs. If the Yankees had been able to do a bit more damage, he could've had a win. He's getting better, give him time.

CORNDOG, you are such a racist & stereotype, better watch your back EVERY NIGHT, you are a disgrace in the human race when everyone is trying to be more open to each toher.

I think WANG should just be traded to the Dodgers where Torre can use him SMARTLY. It's sad enough that YANKEES really give their players a lot of chances but to a pitcher who carry them for 2 seasons with 19 wins. What about A-ROD on drugs??? C.C. isn't that great & so is A.J. but they get paid soooo much. Maybe, WANG should use drugs too & have a CY YOUNG year like CLEMENS. Is that how it works to live in MLB. What a JOKE!....ANGELS RULE STILL!!!

Again If you gave wang the money you gave the other 2 bozo's this may not have happened...he pitched good tonight but again it was the anemic offense once again, everyone says what a wonderful offense the yankees have ..but the enemy now knows all they have to do is throw a rookie at us and we can't hit the broad side of a barn!!!...I don't give a crap if alex has his name..he does not deserve to bat cleanup right now...anyone else would be batiing 7th or 8th with his numbers...bring back Joe Torre or someone who knows how to manage!!!!!

Some of you must have been watching another game or had your heads up your @sses, Wang pitched a decent game. He started mixing in pitches rather than solely relying on his sinker. He carried the Yankees a few short seasons ago when the entire pitching staff was struggling and some of you are so quick to dismiss him. With balls flying out of the park, the Yankees needs a ground ball pitcher and he is it.

wang will pitch better next time. and he should stay in the rotation. he needs to find his feel bakc.

Wang pitched not worse than Sabathia yesterday. However, everyone loses patience with him and force him to win a game immediately. I hope Wang have another chance to prove himself. Maybe there is no chance..........

I am a die hard Yanks fan, but Wang HAS GOT TO GO. He's been given enough chances and just isn't delivering. It was great while it lasted, but Girardi needs to pull the plug on this ASAP.
