Porcello leads Tigers past Pirates 3-1

PITTSBURGH (AP)—Rick Porcello(notes) made the most of his first opportunity to bat in the big leagues. His pitching was pretty good too.

Porcello threw seven crisp innings and had a pair of RBI singles for his first major league hits, leading the Detroit Tigers to a 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night.

“Pitching is always the first priority but it was fun to get a couple of hits,” Porcello said with a smile.

The 20-year-old rookie’s impressive night came in front of an audience more focused on Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals in Detroit than on the baseball game. The crowd of 18,369 erupted twice in the late innings after Penguins center Max Talbot scored two second-period goals. The Penguins held on to beat the Red Wings 2-1 for the title.

Placido Polanco(notes) went 4 for 4 for AL Central-leading Detroit, which has won six of eight. Porcello (7-4) allowed one run and six hits.

Porcello became the first Tigers pitcher with a multihit game since Jeff Weaver(notes) had two hits on June 23, 2002, against Florida. The right-hander also was the first Detroit pitcher to collect more than one RBI in a game since Joe Coleman drove in three on Sept. 21, 1972, at Boston, the season before the designated hitter was adopted by the AL.

“I told (Leyland) before the game that I was a good hitter in high school but that was mainly so he wouldn’t pinch hit for me early,” Porcello said.

Porcello drove in Magglio Ordonez(notes) with a two-out single off Ian Snell(notes) (1-7) in the second inning. Ordonez led off with a base hit, stole second and moved to third on Ramon Santiago’s(notes) single.

Porcello struck again with two outs in the sixth. Snell intentionally walked Santiago to put runners on first and second before his counterpart pulled a pitch down the right-field line to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

“He’s just an athlete, one of those special guys,” Leyland said of Porcello. “He’s 20 years old and succeeding in the big leagues, and he’s just a baby.”

Snell (1-7) gave up two runs and 10 hits in seven innings, dropping 0-5 with a 5.81 ERA in his last 10 starts. Pittsburgh has lost five of seven overall.

“I thought I pitched pretty well but I couldn’t get the pitcher out,” Snell said. “I guess that’s karma for you.”

John Grabow(notes) replaced Snell and Brandon Inge(notes) hit his first pitch over the wall in left for his 14th homer, giving the Tigers a 3-1 lead.

Zach Miner(notes) pitched a scoreless eighth and Fernando Rodney(notes) got three outs for his 12th save. Adam LaRoche(notes) doubled with one out in the ninth but Rodney retired Andy LaRoche(notes) on a grounder to first and struck out Brandon Moss(notes) to end the game.

Freddy Sanchez(notes) hit an RBI double in the sixth for Pittsburgh’s only run.

NOTES: Leyland put CF Curtis Granderson(notes) back in the leadoff spot and said he will remain there for the foreseeable future. Leyland had been experimenting with Granderson hitting in the No. 5 spot with left fielder Josh Anderson(notes) batting first. INF/OF Don Kelly(notes), whose contract was purchased from Triple-A Toledo on Thursday, joined the Tigers on Friday and started in left. Kelly made his major league debut with the Pirates in 2007 and is a Pittsburgh native. Pirates RHP Tyler Yates(notes) underwent tests on his ailing right elbow that showed no structural damage. Yates has been on the disabled list since May 16 with elbow inflammation and had to cut short a simulated game Tuesday when he began experiencing pain in the elbow.

When are they going to get over the love affair with Gallaraga and admit that he really is an outfielder. And as far as a closer goes I know there has to be somebody that can throw strikes somewhere in the majors insteat Rodney. I know that everybody loves Leland but he shows signs of hardening of the arteries to his brain.

I wanted to see a replay of Inge's Homer cuz I missed it.... Inge your my boy..... keep up the stellar defense and keep hacking at it..... and I like the walks he's been drawing lately.... Honestly though... paul I think Santiago or Everett should be leading off.... They both have good bat control and speed.... Josh is a 8th or 9th batter in the rotation... But Leyland says Grandy is the lead off man for the foreseeable future... Lets see if he will continue drawing walks.... stop swinging at balls out of the strike zone.... and get back to hitting doubles and triples more..... That's where he's lacking the most. Hitting 14 homers already has gotten into his head that he's a power hitter... not an all around hitter like he has been when he's at his best

Paul..... Granderson is having a slump year so far.... I don't want him leading off when he's batting 250......... But I don't want him 5th either.... maybe he should be hitting in front of Cabrera.... and he has to learn to lay off the balls..... lots of Tigers do..... Inge your my boy!!!!

a stranger in town....... Unlike Hockey... baseball is a 162 game season where injuries.... slumps.... go hand in hand... Cabrera hasn't gotten his hitting stroke back since pulling his hammy but wow what defense he played.... remember good defense beats good offense.... if the tigers won all their games 3-1 with great defense and pitching... what does it matter? I'd rather see that then see them win 7-6 on great offense and poor pitching. wait.. they won that game against chicago because of an awesome relay and a lucky call. I think the Chicago player got his hand on the plate b4 the tag... but anyway.... The tigers aren't hitting the cover off the ball right now... but give them a couple weeks and they'll be hitting and the pitchers will be struggling.... It's a long season let's see how it works

Hey Post 11.... yah the Tigers won yesterday... but a sweep? Lets see if Gallaraga can get his form back from last year.... and then pray that Dontrell will know where the strike zone is on Sunday... It's gonna be real hard to sweep with those two in the rotation....

I was flipping back and forth and quite frankly, seeing Porcello get his 2 RBI's was more exciting than anything the Wings put on table last night. They looked like a bunch of tired, old men who just assumed they would have to win than have to work to win. Damn...

Hey Jim Leyland, do me a huge favor. I have Granderson on my fantasy team. So tomorrow, when you fire up a Marlboro and put together the lineup card, DO NOT PUT GRANDERSON AT LEADOFF SPOT. He sucks as a leadoff hitter anymore. Please bat him 5th or 6th and LEAVE HIM THERE !!

Hossa must be bad luck-he did nothing for the Wings in the playoffs. Maybe he should go back to Pittsburgh next year so the Wings can take the Cup. And I agree with Rob #12 and #13 about Dane Cook; he blows-he's as funny as a bottle of milk.

Hey post 5 you must be sniffing too much of the gases from those coal mine up there in Penn. Tigers just beat those great pirates with Porcello's bat and arm . How about a sweep for the Tigers . I think I can dust off my glove and beat these no name bum Pirates .

Hitless ass Tigers . I feel sorry for their great starting pitchers . Porcello shamed the @#$%s by winning the game all by himself . Tigers must have the same ailment that the Wings had against the Penguins , Lack of scoring . They need to fire lame ass McClenndon and get a real hitting coach .
They send players like Larish, Thomas down to Toledo and they tear it up down there . They should bring up their hitting coach

Yeah, I think this is the Penguins' time to shine. We will be partying all night at PNC celebrating the Stanley Cup since I am sure they will show it on the big screen. The series doesn't start until a team wins on the road. Well I expect it to start and end tonight.

#1 - the tougher decision is deciding whether to watch Game 7 or go to the Dane Cook show at the Palace.....except since it's me, I'm watching the Cup!

Got a chance to have a real nice weekend for some Detroit Fans, hopefully we can pull it off. Have a good oppurtunity in a touch interleague schedule that we have. Games like these NEED to be won. What an extreme disappointment it would be if the Wings didn't win. Let's do this Detroit!!!

Wings-Pens, Tigers-Pirates ugh!!!!!! just so confused which one to watch, On one had there is the final game of the SC and its the most exciting game in Hockey, but on the other hand Jim Leyland is returning to Pittsburgh where he managed for so long. This is the toughest decision I have to make this year NOT!!!!!!!!!!!! Wings game all the way is where I will be. Go Wings, keep the cup home where it belongs, and on a lesser extent Go Tigers make sure the Friday nite sweep of Pittsburgh teams happens.
