Beckett and Big Papi lift Red Sox over Yankees

BOSTON (AP)—The last time the Red Sox beat New York six straight times to start the season, the Yankees were known as the Highlanders and it was the bandbox in Boston that was brand new.

Josh Beckett(notes) allowed only an infield hit in six innings, and David Ortiz(notes) hit his third homer of the year as the Red Sox beat the Yankees 7-0 on Tuesday night and improved to 6-0 against New York for the first time since 1912.

“They’ve taken it to us so far this year,” said Yankees—and former Red Sox—outfielder Johnny Damon(notes). “But we have 13 more, and hopefully we’ll beat them sometime soon.”

The Red Sox beat the New York Highlanders in 14 straight to start the 1912 season, including the first-ever game in Fenway Park. Fenway is now the oldest ballpark in the major leagues; the original Yankee Stadium, which was replaced this season by a $1.5 billion replica, hadn’t even been built yet.

“You don’t want to be 0-6 against your rival,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “But we are still tied for first place.”

Beckett (7-2) noted that Alex Rodriguez(notes) was recovering from hip surgery for the first five losses, “so we’ll start counting after that.”

Beckett struck out eight and walked two before leaving with a 6-0 lead after six innings, having thrown 93 pitches in a steady drizzle. The only hit he allowed was Robinson Cano’s(notes) fourth-inning grounder to the left of second baseman Dustin Pedroia(notes), who slid to come up with the ball but couldn’t make the throw that had little chance of getting the batter anyway.

It was ruled a base hit by official scorer Mike Shalin.

“I got to it and I slid about eight feet,” said Pedroia, who noted that the play was where the groundskeepers dumped out the infield tarp that covered the field before the game started. “That didn’t really help me out.”

Beckett struck out Jorge Posada(notes) to end the inning, then retired the last six batters he faced, fanning three of them, for his third consecutive victory. In all, only three batters hit the ball out of the infield against him.

Brett Gardner(notes) had the Yankees’ only other hit, off Manny Delcarmen(notes) in the eighth.

“Kind of hard to win with only two hits,” Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter(notes) said. “Beckett pitched great. It’s always tough, every time we face him. He was hitting his spots and we didn’t get too many good swings.”

A.J. Burnett(notes) (4-3) allowed three earned runs on five walks and five hits before leaving with two outs in the third and taking out his frustrations on a dugout watercooler. He gave up Ortiz’s two-run shot to straightaway center field in Boston’s four-run second, when Rodriguez double-clutched on a grounder for an error that gave Boston an extra out.

Burnett walked Mike Lowell(notes) to start the inning, then Ortiz hit a 2-2 pitch over the high center field wall about 400 feet from home plate. Responding to the fans’ “Papi!” chants, he came out for a curtain call.

It was the second homer in three games for the struggling slugger, who hit 54 in 2006 but has been moved from third to sixth in the Red Sox order as he tries to pull his batting average above .200.

On Monday, he went to the eye doctor. His vision was pronounced fine, but he was given eye drops to deal with dryness.

“There’s no getting around how important he is to us,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. “When he does something like that, I think we fell better about ourselves.”

Nick Green(notes) homered and added an RBI double for Boston.

Notes

Burnett was suspended for six games for throwing inside to Texas’ Nelson Cruz(notes), but the Yankees right-hander remains in the rotation during his appeal. … Boston CF Jacoby Ellsbury(notes) got the night off with a sore right shoulder. Tests showed it was just a bruise. … Yankees RHP Brian Bruney(notes) (15-day DL with a strained right elbow) threw a bullpen side and feels strong enough to return to the active roster.

Ugli B---What is "pwnage"? Why do so-called Red Sox fans put an "s" on the end of Sox? Soxeses? Come on, if that's your team show them respect. Aaron you are sooo wrong. So wrong. This is the night of the Yanks! Mark my words, Pal. Peace.

I think tonight is finally the night that we break this little streak of loses against the Sox, i believe we have a better chance as supposed to last night because Beckett is just been lights out in his last few games, if Wang could at least hold the Sox to less than 4 or 5 runs we'll be in good shape cause Wakefield is very hittable imo! Tomorrow we got CC against Penny who imo wasn't the man he was a couple of years ago! Go Yankees let's try and win this!

Who's that idiot that says boston doesn't develop their players? Youkilis, Pedrioa, Papelbon, Lawrie, Masterson, Delcarmen, Lester, Ellsbury......all drafted by the red sox, all on the red sox......that's how you win. You draft well, You develop well, you win championships. All yankees fans, just go back to the last century and relive the glory days when you had a lot more TEAM and a lot less EGO on your roster.

Manny was busted in LA not Boston. Just like the Karate kid was busted in NY. Same with the rest of them. Hell, some of them lied to congress. Jail time. True story.

He messed his wrist up in 08.

After injuring his left wrist during the Red Sox’ victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday night, Ortiz learned yesterday he has tendon sheath damage that will keep him sidelined indefinitely. According to a source, Ortiz’ wrist will be immobilized for roughly the next month to determine whether the injury can heal on its own.

Beckett is pretty dominant when he's on... he usually gets gassed around the 5th -6th inning... he has been hot lately. Long season... where would the Red Sox be if they were even 3-3 vs. bombers??? For you unrealists out there = 3 games out!!

#122---I won't even use your name because you aren't ANY type of fan. Listen kid, we adults enjoy battling on these forums but it's in good fun. I don't know about you but I have yet to get a check endorsed by the MLB. Until that day comes (yeah, right) I'll be able to not take things so personally. I'm still waiting for you to ADD to this forum as opposed to continuously detract. Then again, what can a child really add? Anyway, to all the REAL fans, we have your number tonight! This game will be the turning point in the season. If not, I'm staying off these forums until it blows over. :) Peace.

Despite Knightofcups69's comments, the Yankees have fans worldwide. Not to say the Sox don't but let's be fair. Yes, we're the Evil Empire but we eat that stuff up. All this talk of steroid use on the Yankees is getting really old. Usually it's from morons who have never even seen steroids or have a clue what they're really about. As someone with a unique perspective and having a vast inside knowledge, I can tell you many of your Sox have juiced. That's just a given regardless of your turning a blind eye. John S---good luck to you too tonight. The way it's going I don't see us shutting the Sox down. We're going to have to hit like crazy. You have to love the excitement this series brings to baseball! Peace.

You Skankee fans should be gracious enough to let us poor lovable loser sox fans enjoy a little glory, after all didn't you fans spanning back at least 3 generations, enjoy alot of baseball glory for the better part of the 20th century? Quit acting like the low life primates us Bostonians all know that you New Yorkers are. You guy's are like a school in the summer............"No Class". Try getting some, and then mabye the rest of the country will stop thinking of you all as the sewer system of the Northeast. True advice, from the heart. GO SOX!!!!!!!!!!!

and you said in your post that NY and even boston does not have the luxury of developing young players , well AGAIN your totally wrong , its not a luxury it's a skill , boston develops young players along with the best of them nowadays , while the yankees rather trade young players for OLD has beens .
