Rays beat Rivera in 9th again, top Yankees 9-7

NEW YORK (AP)—No matter which hitters the Tampa Bay Rays send up against Mariano Rivera(notes), they hardly seem intimidated.

Joe Dillon(notes) hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth inning and the surging Rays touched up Rivera for the second time this season, beating the New York Yankees 9-7 on Saturday despite committing four errors.

B.J. Upton(notes) added an RBI single off the star closer, part of a four-run rally that carried the AL champions to their fourth straight victory and sixth in seven games.

“I just loved the way we kept fighting back,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said.

David Price(notes) left with a chance to beat CC Sabathia(notes) in a much-anticipated matchup pitting a potential ace against an established one. But the Yankees scored twice in the eighth against Tampa Bay’s bullpen, tying it 5-all.

Willy Aybar(notes) and Ben Zobrist(notes) homered for the Rays, who doubled their previous season high for errors in a game. Three were wild throws by All-Star catcher Dioner Navarro(notes).

Tampa Bay is 3-0 at the new Yankee Stadium, including an 8-6 victory May 7 when Rivera served up back-to-back homers for the first time in his career. Carl Crawford(notes) and Evan Longoria(notes) connected for ninth-inning solo shots in that one.

This time, injury fill-ins Dillon and Ben Zobrist sparked the burst against Rivera.

“I think anytime you do something against a closer and you do it in recent memory, it gives you a little bit of confidence,” said Zobrist, who opened the inning with a triple.

Mark Teixeira(notes) homered in the eighth and hit a two-run double in the ninth for New York. Alex Rodriguez(notes) also went deep for the Yankees, who had won 17 of 22.

Handed a 9-5 cushion, Rays reliever Dan Wheeler(notes) gave up three straight hits to start the ninth, then retired Rodriguez and Jorge Posada(notes) with Teixeira on second.

Ex-Yankee Randy Choate(notes) got Robinson Cano(notes) on a long fly to center for his third save in eight days—the first three of his major league career, which began in 2000. Upton made a lunging grab to end it.

“One of the guys said to me, `Only 491 more to go to catch Mo,”’ Choate said.

Zobrist tripled to left-center and scored on a single by Dillon, a journeyman who was acquired from Oakland on May 9. Dillon has three hits in each of the past two games, matching his career high each time.

Upton added a two-out RBI single off Rivera (0-2), who was then lifted from the game in a rare sight. Crawford hit a run-scoring single off Phil Coke(notes) and another run scored on Rodriguez’s error at third.

“After the team ties the game, it was tough to go out and do that,” Rivera said. “Especially when you know that you have the top of your lineup coming up. You just want to get three outs and then you look up and it’s four runs.”

Rivera hadn’t allowed four runs in a game since April 27, 2007, against Boston.

“I thought he threw some good pitches to Zobrist. It didn’t look to me like he had a problem. The drives into the gap just got too much of the plate,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “It’s going to happen from time to time. He’s been in a good stretch for us. When you see it, you’re kind of shocked.”

Friday night’s rainout pushed back the matchup between Sabathia and Price, drafted No. 1 overall by Tampa Bay in 2007.

Making his fourth big league start, the 23-year-old lefty walked five in 5 2-3 innings but allowed only two hits and three runs—one earned.

“I didn’t have it today,” Price said. “I’m lucky to get out of here with our team winning.”

Sabathia went eight innings, giving up five runs (four earned) and five hits. He entered 7-1 with a 2.44 ERA in 11 career starts against Tampa Bay.

“Couple of bad pitches, some bad locations,” Sabathia said. “I’m sure we will face each other again during the course of the season and we certainly will have an opportunity to talk.”

Tampa Bay’s J.P. Howell(notes) (1-2) struck out pinch-hitter Hideki Matsui(notes) with runners at the corners to end the eighth.

Notes

Maddon said injured DH Pat Burrell(notes) (neck strain) likely will begin a minor league rehab assignment in the next few days and could be back in Tampa Bay’s lineup by Friday. … Rodriguez’s 561st homer put him two behind Reggie Jackson for 11th on the career list.

Is it me or does it seem that Mariano is nearly perfect when he has an actual save situation but very mediocre, and sometimes even "terrible" in a tie situation? Anyone have stats on his ERA when he comes in with the lead vs. a tie? Any time they bring him in during a tie, I cringe and wait for the worst.

In 1972 my father brought me to Yankee Stadium where I met Lindy McDaniel and Sparky Lyle. Those were the only two autographs I have ever asked for. That magical night has stayed with me these 36 years. I agree with Art. There are so many fair-weather fans out there. If you have suffered through the Donnie-Baseball years then you can call yourself a Yankee fan. Many young kids go with the flash, pomp and circumstance of newer players as they emerge and they change their allegiances like socks (perhaps more often). I do think that Yankee fans are more resilient because management always spends. If I was a Nationals, Royals, Pittsburgh or Cleveland fan I'd be pulling my hair out. Peace.

Yes there are many Yankee haters in the world and i can handle them all. I have stuck with the Yankees win or loose i remember when i started watching them in like 1988 or so i can remember with Don Mattingly there # 23 he was the face of the franchise from 82 to 95 then came Jeter. Its sad Donnie Baseball never won a ring in NY Maybe in L.A. he just could but if the Yankees get there and we happen to Play L.A. i know where my loyalty stands. And iam not giving up on Mo just yet he is gonna get 500 saves soon and i hope it happens at the new house a new milestone for the new house.I said Joba needs to be the closer or we trade for someone who is out there? I know we will have more money when Matsui is done cause he is not comming back in 10 Damon well maybee a one year deal but again well see it will be Austin jackson comming up next year.

Art you are crazy. Yankee fans do not disappear. I have been a fan since the 70's. I endured the 80's and 90's and not seeing one of my fav Yankees of all time, Don Mattingly, never get a World Series chance. So for you to say that is a crock. All fans expect their teams to win, if we didn't then why would even want to watch. As far as throwing out history, the Yankees should be proud of their 26 titles and so should their fans.

A young team with home built talent can run with a store bought $400m all star team. The Rays are not the doormat for the Yanks and Sox any more, can't count on beating the Rays 15-20x per year anymore. The Rays are the new MLB model to follow...and its dam fun to watch!!!

Are you an architect? LOL. You make valid points. My only "retort" would be that the Yankees have a lot of money. Boston has a lot of money, too. Boston bought a World Series in '04 yet few people seem comfortable admitting as much. Even the Marlins paid for a series. I was born in Boston and now live in Jersey. My entire family are Sox fans and they still cannot admit that the Sox paid for theirs as the Yankees have so many times before. It's okay, in my humble opinion, that if you can afford to pay for the best team that you do so. Players should benefit from the owners being or getting rich. I understand when fans (other than Boston) scream about big market contracts. I understand. I don't agree. Peace.

    cole2rocks,

People dismiss Jeter, Rivera, etc...because they cannot stand arrogant Yankees fans who guarantee success. Although I must admit that it is so easy to guarantee the next great closer coming aboard, when you have a 400 million dollar payroll to play with.

I know, you will retort with Jeter, Mariano, Posada, and Cano coming through the system. It still doesn't resolve the rest of the roster that they outbid everyone else for.

You are 100% right though about Jeter being an ambassador to the game, Mariano's insane longevity as a closer, and the Yankees being the greatest baseball and (sports dynasty) ever.

People love to hate on the Yankees because there is never any grace or humility amongst Yankees fans. Yankees fans always expect to win, and when they don't, fans conveniently throw out history (or disappear) when they lose.

It's so easy to dismiss some people as non-fans. Anyone who doesn't respect Derek Jeter as an ambassador of baseball is simply an imbecile. It is tearing me apart watching the greatest closer of all time coming to the end of an illustrious career. There have been other closers who have done well for a time (Gagne, Hoffman, Papelbon) but no one has neared Rivera's longevity of greatness. The Yankees are the greatest baseball dynasty EVER! Sorry, but that point is unarguable. Now we see another HOFer ride into the sunset. And, because we know our team, we wait patiently for the next great one to appear. It won't be long. Peace.

hey redskinman13 I am not living in the past, let me try again, it is good to look back in te past, see what teams have done and not done. I root for the yanks this year and next, but next year is later. I do not hate any other teams, or fans of any team, but when people talk stupid, it shows that they only got as high as JV baseball in high school, sat the bench in football and got cut from the basketball team. They really have no clue what sports is about, its great to be a fan of your team. as a former player who never made it to the majors (6 yeasrs in the minors, aaa cardinal chain 2 years, close but so far) I just want my team to win more then yours.

hey, post 42 yes we say we have won 26 championships, it is all in the past, even last year is in the past. so what have you done for me lately is a true statement, but i ask you rays fan redsox fan and every other teams fan except phillie fan ,what have you done for me lately? Especilly you ray fans, wow, you had your first winning year. tt was a good year. And as for all the fans crying about the yanks pay-roll, remember something, it is a business to those owners, its entermant to you and me, sure we make them their money, but if you have a good companey, you keep investing more money into it, the yankees (orinazination) still make millions of dollars each year. thats what it is all about to the owners. the yanks spend, dose not mean they will will the championship, but they will have a good team, fun to watch and spend money going to games and watching on tv. And as for steriods who really cares? remember it is enterment to us. players back in the 60s and 70s taking speed, and all other kind of pick-me-ups those players are joke when saying todays players are cheeting,

First Off to say the Yankees pen is suspect, you should recheck the word suspect. The pen is absolutely horrible. Rivera has never been the same since the Diamondbacks World Series and then the unfortunate deaths of his children. He is void and really can't pitch all that well anymore. The Yankees should have cut him loose a few years ago for a fresh start and allowed Bernie Williams to stick around. The Yankees are not really all that great (speaking as a true fan). Thier pitching is only as good as it gets in the front two or three starters That being CC, AJ, and a toss up between JOBA, Andy, and the other guy that has been up and down more often than a Yo-yo from the minor leagues. Jeter is old lets face it he has not played all that amazing in the past rew years. A-rod is a A-rod yet again and Texiera is a great defensive and offensive add this season but, lets see the end of the year when pressure is on. He will not perform because A-Rod doesn't hit in the playoffs sorry girls but, it is real, damn real. Tex having only one season in playoff experience is going to be walked more often than not unless Girardi figures out that putting A-Rod ahead of Tex would make sense to get A-rod better pitches and more walks. THIS way the pitchers must pitch to one or the other rather than walking them both.
GO YANKS, but, it is going to be a very nail biting season.
    Peace out.

The Yanks, Sox and Rays all have good starting pitching. Tampa's pen is weak, Yanks pen is suspect, the Sox pen is strong. This will matter down the stretch. Sox need an SS and a productive DH. Rays pen will cause them to finish behind Yanks and Sox unless they upgrade big time. All three teams have battled injuries to key players

why is it that everytime the rays win, the haters say last year's run was "a fluke, a career year"? a career year when no one on the team hit better that .300? a year when our offense ranked in the bottom half of the AL? come on, y'all just can't believe that the rays are legit. the Rays lead the league in runs this year and has players at the top of every offensive catagory. if I was a yankees or sox fan, i would be scared of when the bullpen gets its act together and we reel of a 10-15 game winning streak. not to mention that 3/4 of the infield is hurt right now.
