Peralta has 3 RBIs, Tribe rallies past Yankees 5-4

CLEVELAND (AP)—Jhonny Peralta(notes) took an easy approach and lined a hard game-winning hit.

Cleveland’s third baseman drove in three runs with three hits, including a one-out RBI single in the ninth inning as the Indians defeated the New York Yankees 5-4 Sunday.

“The only thing I thought is we really need a hit to win, so don’t try too hard,” Peralta said. “I figured they would pitch inside. That’s where it was, so I just swung.”

Peralta pulled the 3-1 offering from David Robertson(notes) past diving third baseman Alex Rodriguez(notes) on the backhand side to score Trevor Crowe(notes) from second base.

Mark Teixeira(notes) extended his season-high hitting streak to 13 games and had four RBIs for New York. He hit a two-run homer, his 16th, in the sixth off former Yankees right-hander Carl Pavano(notes). His two-run double off Matt Herges(notes) in the eighth tied it at 4.

“He’s been hot his whole career, not just now,” Pavano said of Teixeira, who is hitting .400 with 20 RBIs during his streak.

New York played its 17th straight errorless game, tying the major league record set by Boston in June 2006, but lost for only the fourth time in 18 games.

Kerry Wood(notes) (2-2) got Jorge Posada(notes) to bounce into an inning-ending double play with runners on first and third in the top of the ninth.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi gave Brett Gardner(notes) at first base the steal sign with Posada up, but the rookie didn’t go.

“It has been addressed,” Girardi said.

Phil Coke(notes) (1-3) came on in the bottom half and walked Crowe, who was bunted to second by Asdrubal Cabrera(notes). Robertson replaced Coke and walked Ben Francisco(notes) before yielding Peralta’s hit.

“The walks hurt us,” Girardi said. “That’s the bottom line. Walks aren’t something you can’t afford in that situation.

“They got the hit. We didn’t.”

After Cabrera twice bunted foul, manager Eric Wedge gave him the green light to swing away.

“I saw Wedge take off the bunt sign and saw what Asdrubal was doing and thought, ‘Good luck to you,’ ” Peralta said.

Cabrera said he wasn’t worried about bunting foul for a third strike.

“I feel comfortable bunting, that’s my game,” the shortstop said. “I wanted to move the runner and stay out of the double play.”

Pavano pitched well for 7 1-3 innings, leaving with a 4-2 lead as he sought his sixth win in seven starts in May.

“They are a tough team,” Pavano said. “We played great, let it slip away, but came back. We got a win, so I’m happy.”

The right-hander signed a four-year, $40 million contract with New York in 2005, but spent much of his time on the disabled list. In only 26 starts, he was 9-8 with a 5.00 ERA.

He got off to a rocky start in Cleveland after signing a one-year, free-agent contract in January. He was 0-3 with a 9.50 ERA in four April starts before becoming one of the Indians’ few bright spots in May.

The Indians put All-Star center fielder Grady Sizemore(notes) on the 15-day disabled list before the game with an inflamed left elbow and played without catcher Victor Martinez(notes), who bruised his left knee Saturday. Reliever Rafael Betancourt(notes) made only three pitches before leaving with a right groin strain Sunday.

Pavano yielded a one-out single to Derek Jeter(notes) in the eighth and was replaced by Rafael Perez(notes). Johnny Damon(notes) sent Jeter to third with a double and Perez was replaced by Betancourt, who went to a 2-1 count on Teixeira—and had to leave.

“It hurt a lot,” Betancourt said. “I’ve had a little pain there for a couple days and been doing a lot of stretching. On that pitch I just felt it pop. I think it’s going to hurt for a while.”

Teixeira hit a 3-2 pitch from Herges off the wall, just out of the reach of a leaping Crowe in center to score both Jeter and Damon and ruin Pavano’s bid for a win.

Pavano gave up three runs and seven hits, striking out four without a walk.

Notes

Yankees RHP Joba Chamberlain(notes) is scheduled to start Monday night. It would be his first appearance in Cleveland since the 2007 AL division series when he was bombarded by a swarm of bugs. … Jeter has batted .397 (25-for-63) during a 14-game hitting streak. … Cabrera has hit .328 (19-for-58) with 8 runs and 9 RBIs in 13 games in the leadoff spot. … Cleveland called up utilityman Chris Gimenez from Triple-A Columbus. Gimenez, who can catch, served as backup to Kelly Shoppach(notes) with Martinez ailing.

From what i see the indians are not 1/2 a ... they are a major league team-- with professional players-- so they are not #1 but, every team has their down fall--- they are men with the eye of an eagle can you all tell me that you all can see all the pitches all the time and tell the difference between them-- if you did you would be there with them on a major league team . It takes a special mindset for that to happen. So you know -it -alls pipe down and and your loss with a grain of salt. Go Indians !!!! Go REDSOX ! YES it does happen a person can like two teams at the same time.

another reason for getting rid of Gardner. Not smart enough to learn the steal sign, very costly bush league mistake.

icedragon, i can understand that. its hard not to defend your team and sometimes we fall to levels outside of our selves :0) but ittion from everyday life and i would rather be arguing with sports than politics :0). i will say that i believe your team has a legitimate shot in the division this year. many may not agree but i believe they could hang in there and make this a real interesting 3 way race. remember tampa bay??? hey best of luck with your team this year and have a great week my friend.

Actually John S, I'm not a Yankees fan. Far from it. Just from my experience I think I can say you're one of the only Sox fans I've seen that would ever even think of uttering the words 'go yanks'. The rivalry between the two teams is intense. My team is the Jays, and the only time I go out of my way to bash other fans is if they bash my team first (which Yankees fans seem to enjoy doing), so I've got no love for them. But the bottom line is, its sports, there's really no need for anybody to get worked up over it. Your team loses. Life goes on. It's just a distraction from other things.

I love how some indian fans are saying the yankee fans are whiners and that clevend is awesome and you better watch out for us. As i see it the yankees have one 2 out of three so far in the series dominating both games they have won and the one they lost was only becasue they made a couple of bad decisons. Giradi told gardner to steal he just didnt go. Why marino was not in is a mystery becasue you really cant trust anyone else in that bullpen other than acvces. The umpires made questionable calls and becasue of these the yankees lost. If it was the other way around the indian fans would be whining just as much if not more saying they only got those calls becasue they are the yankees. So in my opninon the yankees lost that game the indians didnt win it. SO INDIAN's YOU BETTER WATCH OUT FOR THE YANKEES!!!!!!!!!!

    TO:-Yankee's management and ownership
    Please Explain:-
-Explain please the team has a "zillion" trillion dollar payroll and again they rely on some unproven pitchers (WITH POTENTIAL) in a game the team should have won...Yea the DP by Posada killed the rally but Mr. Manager (who I believe is a good one but have my doubts about a good one for this type of a team) again allowed the minimum paid players the unproven to lose. If I am going down I will go down with my BEST and PROVEN....These games Close Losses are an important part of the 162 schedule. You need to win 99% of the close ones Now so in September You have no regrets....

Icedragon, heres where i stand on things, i am a die hard sox fan with out a question. i love the rivalry between the two teams and wish each year for a close race to the end. for me its quite exciting as a sports fan. i personally dont( hate )any team. even in fun. i have a ot of friends that are yankee fans as well as sox fans. when i root for the yankees its because i want to see them battle the sox to the end each year. there is no doubt the yankees have a great history and will always continue to.in fact it is places like this that has showed me what you as a yankee fan have to deal with everyday and has taught me why so many are so defensive. the yankees will always be a great team and i will always respect that. and the fans have alot to be proud of. so why should i hate them. so when i root for both it is that i would like to see both teams slug it out to the end and may the better of the two win it all. thanks for asking icedragon. have a great week!!!!!!!!! go yanks go sox ! :0)

The difference was Wedge's willingness to use his closer before it became an 'actual save situation'. As Wedge realized, what good is bringing in your closer after the game is lost? This was one of those games where you could say it was won by the manager's decisions. More often than not, Giraldi will be outmanaged by his opponent. Joe Torre hardly ever was. I was at a Dodger game last week and Mr. Torre proved exactly what I've just said by doing the exact opposite of what Giraldi did. Dodgers won, Yankees lost. Sorry George, you'd have been better off keeping the manager you believed had nothing to do with all the succes he brought your organization. Too bad you had no clue what he meant to the success you stumbled upon. now, you're forced to having your Yankees fans blame your losses on the umps calls rather than your manager's ignorant decisions as the games unfold. I guess, you're probably in agreement with them at the time, right? I thought so.

Hey Star... Pavano isnt in the Indians bullpen.... hes a starter for them.... and give it time, he'll ruin yer team just as he did the yankees for 4 years. Hes an injury machine, and can never ever ever stay healthy. Have fun with that tart.

Uh, John S...."go yanks go sox"? How exactly do you cheer for both at the same time? You either hate the Sox and love the Yankees, or hate Yankees and love the Sox. I didn't know there was any middle ground. Strangest thing I've seen in a while, that's for sure.

The Indians can celebrate all they want to and they should do a group chapel to thank God that the umpire made the call on Jeter that he did b/c if not Mo comes in the 9th with Yankees up 5-4. I don't care about Brett missing the sign or Posada bouncing into a DP b/c the bottom line is the Yankees were screwed by the umps!!

This will continue to be the problem with the Yankees this year. Girardi may be the worst manager in the majors. I can live with pulling Wang, you have to have some faith in your bullpen to get the job done. There is however no excuse for not having Gardner steal to stay out of double play. The Yanks will probably win the east this year, they have to much talent for even Girardi to screw that up. However, they will never win a World series with him at the helm.

Seems to me bad calls happen all the time. Probably at least one in every game. If it had been a bad call against the Indians that 'let' the Yankees win, and Indians fans would have complained, I bet Yankees fans would have said something like 'quit making excuses, we won, so deal with it.' Crap happens. So in that vein, quit making excuses, the Indians won, deal with it.

Poster #18 is correct. Bad call on the Jeter infield hit cost the Yanks a run. Plus, how 'bout the horrible strike call to Posada in the ninth with a runner on third and one out! The ball wasn't even close and the umpire called it a strike. He then had two strikes and had to protect the plate, so he hit into the DP. There went possibly another run. At least Pavano didn't get the win.
