4 ejected in Boston’s 3-1 win over Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—Getaway day started a little bit early for the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins.

Jason Varitek(notes) hit two home runs, then was one of four people ejected by young umpire Todd Tichenor during separate arguments in the seventh inning of Boston’s 3-1 victory over Minnesota on Thursday.

The 32-year-old Tichenor, up from the Triple-A Pacific Coast League, gave the boot to both catchers and both managers during a wild seventh inning that ended with Red Sox starter Josh Beckett(notes) giving a dismissive wave toward home plate in disgust.

“Everybody handles things differently,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said of Tichenor. “It looked like he had his hands full today. Their guys were getting ejected, we’re getting (ejected). That’s probably not your goal of the game.”

Joe Crede(notes) hit a home run in his return from a three-game absence because of a bruised hand, but Beckett (5-2) was too much for the Twins. He allowed one run on three hits with four walks and eight strikeouts in seven innings.

Jacoby Ellsbury(notes) went 0 for 3 to snap a 22-game hitting streak. But Varitek hit solo homers off Anthony Swarzak(notes) (1-1) to lead off the fifth and seventh innings, the first first time the switch-hitter has hit two home runs in a game off right-handed pitchers since 2004, according to baseballreference.com.

The razzing really started after his second homer.

Dustin Pedroia(notes) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field and Jason Kubel(notes) fired a perfect strike to Mike Redmond(notes) at home plate as Jeff Bailey(notes) came barreling home. Redmond applied a sweep tag and replays showed that he appeared to hit Bailey on the arm just before Bailey’s hand touched the plate.

But Tichenor called Bailey safe, prompting an animated protest from Redmond. Tichenor tossed Redmond almost immediately after the catcher approached him.

Tichenor was unavailable for comment after the game, but crew chief Jerry Layne said there was no physical contact between the catcher and the umpire.

“Major League Baseball will review the report that Todd puts together,” Layne said. “I don’t know what was said. I just know it was very emotional at the moment. … The umpire did his job.”

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire jumped out of the dugout to defend Redmond and was ejected himself.

“I just thought he had a quick gun there,” Gardenhire said. “He just pulled the trigger too quick, and I went out to defend and he threw me out too.”

With Joe Mauer(notes) as the designated hitter, Redmond’s ejection forced the Twins to give up their DH for the rest of the game. It was the first career ejection for Redmond, who knew the stakes.

“I couldn’t believe he threw me out, honestly,” Redmond said. “I don’t go out there, ever, to get thrown out. Especially knowing that Joe’s DHing. I can’t get thrown out. I really can’t get thrown out. I didn’t swear at him. I didn’t do anything. He just had a short fuse I guess.”

Things escalated in the bottom of the inning when Beckett threw a pitch that Varitek tried to frame for strike three on Brendan Harris(notes). When he didn’t get the call—replays showed that it appeared to be outside—Beckett seethed. Varitek stood up to intervene, turned around and got in Tichenor’s face.

Ejection No. 3.

“I just said it was uncharacteristic of him,” said Beckett, giving the clean version. “It was all caused by me.”

Then it was Francona’s turn to defend his player.

See ya.

“He handled it the way I like to see a person handle it,” Layne said of Tichenor. “He didn’t let the game get out of control by not taking charge. He didn’t throw anybody out that didn’t deserve to be thrown out. He did his job. The managers did their jobs. Varitek stuck up for his pitcher. That’s baseball.”

Swarzak gave up three runs on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts in six innings of his second big league start. After pitching seven scoreless in a win over Milwaukee in his debut last week, Swarzak’s scoreless innings streak reached 11 before Varitek got to him in the fifth inning on Thursday.

Varitek, who declined comment, entered the game hitting .222 with three homers from the left side of the plate this season.

Jonathan Papelbon(notes) pitched the ninth for his 13th save.

Notes

Red Sox OF Jason Bay(notes) was given his first day off of the season. … Gardenhire gave SS Nick Punto(notes) the day off to rest a sore groin that has been nagging him for the last week. … Red Sox OF Mark Kotsay(notes) will continue his rehab from back surgery by playing three of four games for Triple-A Pawtucket starting on Friday. … Michael Cuddyer(notes) hit for the pitcher’s spot in the seventh and Brian Buscher(notes) was the pinch-hitter in the ninth.

I've been a fan of major league baseball since my dad took me to my first game (Giants at Phillies) in 1968. My hatred of sports officials started then, and continues to grow each year. Most umpires and referees are severely frustrated athletes who love to have some power over the superstars of the games they call. It's an ego thing. Same thing with many police officers. It's a version of "small man" syndrome. As I've gotten older, I've lost almost all interest in professional sports for three reasons: 1) officials who want to be part of the game, 2) athletes who have no perspective on "real life", and 3) a sports media who thinks they should dictate policy in the leagues.

Bobby T that is why you do little league games. you couldn't handle the BIGs. Stop defending the woret bunch of idiots that baseball has ever had. yes I coached and reffed games as well as you so stop defending idiots. High school refs and little league refs and umpires are just as bad as the pros are.

it is time some one got umpires under control. They want total control of these games but you cannot find one that has a consistant strike zone and they are always willing to eject players. I say it is time the players banded together and went after these usless umpires as a whole. Managers can't say anything bad about them players can't say anything bad about them but they are probably the sorriest bunch of umpires i have seen in 50 years of watching baseball and they get worse every year. I the old days the fans got on the bad umpires and got rotten tomatoes thrown at them and they didn't last long on the BIGS. I say kick a lotta dirt on them and do it as a team let everyone on the team get bounced and then maybe the league would take a serious look at what they are doing. Umpires have no concept of the game any more nor they have a clue as to what a ball or strike is. Fire them all and start over

When are umpires going to be held responsible for thier actions. If players screw up they get suspended and /or fined. With the umpires it is oh well he had a bad day. This guy needs to go back to triple A and not be aloud back until he knows how to play with the big boys. They were all doing thier jobs I suggest he learn his.

This umpire wants to make a name for himself. Guys like this does not have a place in the Major Leaque. Throw him back to the minors where he belong.

As a Yankee fan, but a fan of baseball first, I think I was a little surprised Tek got the boot. There was nothing, seemingly, intentional done there. I think Tek is as important to the Sox as Posada is to the Yanks. They know the staff, call a good game, and play honorably (if not great all the time).

What a year for us fans though. Sox and Yanks humming along. Tampa is hurting, but I wouldn't count them out just yet. Mets and Phillies duking it out. Cards, Cubs and Brewers playing well. The Dodgers, though, seem to me to be the biggest surprise. Holding there own while only seemingly able to improve themselves soon.

Like I said, What a great time to be a fan.

These umpires really suck especially when making bad calls against the Red Sox. Fortunately, the Red Sox won despite having to compete against both the Twins and the umpires.

It's always the umps fault when it comes to the Red Sox, SUCH BS. News Flash, the Red Sox were out of 1st place as the Blue Jays led from the outset of the season until their horrendous start. I thank you for that Toronto as you have let the Yankees back into the race. Yankees should win the division by double digit numbers despite their injuries and now they have a smaller ballpark and put up numbers like they have at Fenway for years.

for someone who thinks they are a yankess fan you'd think they would know that the new yankee stadium has the exact same dimensions of the old yankees stadium...

I was at the game and I think all 4 ejections were warrented. Redmond was in Tichenor's face pretty good and I'm sure there were some choice words. Gardenhire had been up a couple of times before so I'm sure this was just icing on the cake. Live, I thought Bailey slide around the tag in time. It was really close. It wouldn't of mattered if Redmond would of blocked the plate better. He left the whole back side open. Tek was just backing up his pitcher. That's what captain's do. Francona was backing up his captain. That's what managers do. Argue balls and strikes, expect an early shower.

Blame the two RS ejections on Beck. He should know better than to let his emotions get the best of him on a call like that. You just don't argue the strike zone. If you do then you get tossed. He's a pro so this ones on him. Man up grow some stones and throw the next one over. Tek did the best he could and handled it in order to keep Beck in the game. The ump had to toss him or end up in a worse situation.
The play at the plate call could have gone either way. If you argue you could get tossed and he got tossed.

You Got it Frank #53 I would not have liked to be in his shoes sometimes all you can do to keep the game under control is run guys who flip out. its so funny people who criticize umpires / Refs 95% of the time have never called one game in thier lives Guys I officiate HS Baseball and Softball and yes I do get paid for it but I also umpire LL Baseball and Softball and don't get a dime and even if I did It wouldn't be enough to take the abuse some of the pro umps have to take.

i will just say this that ump was outta line tossing everyone so quickly, i am a sox fan, but i will say i was surprised that he tossed redmond and gardenhire after nothing, and the ump even got the call wrong, bailey was out. As far as beckett, varitek and tito, seeing where that first breaking ball to the same batter was a dead strike, and then that close pitch that wasnt called probably was the last straw, and once varitek got ran was it any surprise tito was going to get tossed as well?

So honestly if you look at the Zambrano tossing followed by this game, its a joke any of the four got tossed in todays game, maybe the ump should return to the minors until he can handle major league players.

well i did see the game today.rule book time.argue balls & strikes=auto ejection, show up an ump and say you, your etc make it personal=auto ejection.the ball was off the plate.replay proved it.twins play was bang bang to make a call in a split second.the crew chief did talk to the media as did the red sox manager said things the right way.twins manager not.he's in the wrong but not his fault.bottom line players & coaches have to grow up.that why we have kids wondering why they get ejecteted from games when their hero did the same thing.the same goes for the parents that like to fight, argue at their kids games....but they gey charged by police when they go too far.
