Beltran, Mets walk off with comeback win

NEW YORK (AP)—Mets manager Jerry Manuel and GM Omar Minaya have both said they want to see more fight out of their team this year.

They got it Tuesday night.

Carlos Beltran(notes) drew a bases-loaded walk from Jeff Bennett(notes) with two outs in the 10th inning and New York rallied to beat the Atlanta Braves 4-3 for a rare comeback victory.

The Mets were down by three in the eighth but fought back to improve to 1-11 this season when trailing after seven innings.

“Six outs to go and we were able to take it out of their pockets pretty much,” closer Francisco Rodriguez(notes) said. “Wins like this get you going.”

Beltran also doubled, stole third and scored the tying run in the ninth for the Mets, who have won eight of nine.

“He can take over a game. That’s basically what he did tonight,” Manuel said.

Jair Jurrjens(notes) took a four-hit shutout into the eighth for Atlanta before a two-run double to left-center by Jose Reyes cut it to 3-2—though he was easily thrown out at third when he tried to stretch it into a triple.

Beltran opened the ninth with a double off Mike Gonzalez(notes) and swiped third on a close play with one out. Braves third baseman Chipper Jones(notes) thought third-base umpire Greg Gibson missed the call.

“It came down to one play and he got it wrong. I never had a guy slide into my glove and be safe,” Jones said. “We played a perfect game tonight and we lost.”

Fernando Tatis(notes) was hit by an 0-2 pitch before pinch-hitter Luis Castillo(notes) tied it with a sacrifice fly. It was the second blown save in seven chances for Gonzalez, who picked off Tatis for the third out.

By then, the Mets had new life.

“You could see it. Everyone was up. Last year it probably would have been a 1-2-3 inning. It showed we have heart and determination,” Ryan Church(notes) said.

Reyes reached on an infield single with two outs in the 10th and stole second. After an intentional walk to Alex Cora(notes), pinch-hitter Ramon Castro(notes) walked to load the bases.

Bennett (0-1) went to a full count on Beltran and his final delivery appeared a bit low. The right-hander walked off the mound shaking his head and muttering into his glove.

“You are in the big leagues, you’ve got to throw strikes in that situation. I didn’t get the job done,” Bennett said.

Atlanta dropped to 14-1 when leading after seven innings.

Rodriguez (1-0) worked two scoreless innings for the win, the first time he has pitched more than one inning in a major league game since Aug. 17, 2007, with the Los Angeles Angels.

He had a pair of four-out saves for Venezuela in this year’s World Baseball Classic.

“I felt really strong out there,” Rodriguez said. “My command was perfect.”

Jones was back in Atlanta’s lineup after sitting out Monday night with a stiff and swollen right elbow. It was the first game at Citi Field for Jones, who hit .313 with 19 homers and 55 RBIs in 88 games at Shea Stadium, the Mets’ old ballpark.

One night after Atlanta’s Derek Lowe(notes) beat Johan Santana(notes) in a matchup of established aces, Jurrjens locked up with Mike Pelfrey(notes) in a pitching duel between youngsters.

Bad baserunning nearly cost the Mets, looking to generate offense without injured slugger Carlos Delgado(notes) the past two games. An aching right hip is expected to sideline him for at least a few days, and the team plans to decide by Friday whether to put him on the disabled list.

“It wasn’t a perfect game today, but we pick each other up,” Cora said.

Casey Kotchman(notes) hit an RBI single and rookie center fielder Jordan Schafer(notes) had two assists for the Braves, who were trying for their first four-game winning streak this season. Brian McCann(notes) had three hits, including an RBI double.

Atlanta is 5-2 on an eight-game road trip against NL East rivals.

Notes

A nearly naked man with “Let’s Go Mets” written on his back darted out of the right-field stands in the fifth inning, streaked toward second base and slid feet-first into the bag as the crowd of 39,408 howled. He was quickly corralled by security. … New York has 12 triples and 12 homers in 19 games at spacious Citi Field.

You are not a Mets fan if you think the Mets should have lost last night. A win is a win.

its true that bad calls do happen but the reliever was put in a position that he is payed to get his team out of and he couldn't throw strikes.. it wasnt just the umpires that gave the Mets the game. LETS GO METS!!

Cool that they mentioned the streaker in the Notes section... That stuff usually isn't promoted... And it was absolutely the most exciting moment at the game last night.

Doesn't anybody see that Bennett gave the game away?

Bad calls, good calls, bad plays, good plays.... all part of the game.

Bringing in your WORST reliever(?) in an important game and letting him hand the game over?

Let's see now, that's 2 wins for the starters that Moylan and Bennett have cost. Vazquez in Philly, and now Jurrjens.

A win's a win I guess but it seems a little embarrasing to have to be given the game by the ump.

Bad umpire calls are part of the game. Call it what you want but the Mets still put themselves in a position to make something happen, and they did. Not all wins are going to be pretty. Some, like this one, are ugly. The key, it is a WIN. Any day of the week, I will take it. LETS GO METS!

Mets fan here, Reyes was SAFE trying (admittedly stupidly) to stretch the double into a triple. Watch the replay, Chipper never tagged him. They even said as much on MLB. The Beltran play was likely payback for that. Yes the Mets make dumb plays, but lets look at the standings, 8 of 9 and the Mets ARE in first place. Betran is having a terrific year. Poster boy Castillo is actually playing pretty well. They have the best starter and one of the best closers in the game. Lets look at some positives for a change.

Just to be fair though, earlier in the game I believe in like the 5th inning the Mets had David Wright on first with 1 out and Wright tried to steal second and Tatis was up and he struck out on the play and Wright was easily in but the ump called him out, even Gary Cohen, who like always agrees with the umps, said it was a "horrible" call to use his exact words. So basically, the Beltran play was just payback for gipping us before... GO METS!!!

Yet another STUPID play by Beltran the teflon player. I just hope somebody in Queens gets in the face of these idiotic Latinos and makes them realize they are playing STUPID baseball. Reyes trying to stretch a triple, Beltran stealing 3rd and being given a gift, this after he muffed a flyball a few nights back, and let's not forget Castillo's foolish throw, Reyes' mental meltdowns the past few games, and Delgado's inability to catch a soft pop-up.......Los Mets better get their acttogether before it's Los Curtains again in October....Minaya must go....and go NOW.

so, let's see...a ground rule double costs the braves a run, Beltran is out at third, and 3 walks to bring in a 2 out run???

    the braves are snakebit.

Mets fan here.....but Beltran was out at 3rd. Ump was in a bad position to make the call. Chipper should have punched the ump in the throat. The ump woulda thought that Beltran had just hit him, and he woulda thrown beltran out of the game.

I like when my team wins. But I hate when my team lucks into a win.

    oh well
