Halladay outpitches Burnett as Jays beat Yanks 5-1

TORONTO (AP)—Roy Halladay(notes) wasn’t about to get too caught up in his showdown with A.J. Burnett(notes). Instead, the Toronto ace did what he always does—shut down the New York Yankees.

Halladay pitched a five-hitter to best his former teammate and Scott Rolen(notes) had three hits and three RBIs for the Blue Jays in a 5-1 victory Tuesday night.

“That’s a big part of being consistent, having the same approach and not letting those things affect the way you look at games,” Halladay said of facing Burnett, who pitched for Toronto from 2006 to 2008. “As soon as you start changing the way you approach the game you can find yourself in trouble.”

Aaron Hill(notes) hit a solo homer for the Blue Jays, who improved to an AL-best 23-12. They lead New York, which was playing without shortstop Derek Jeter(notes), by 6 1/2 games.

Halladay (7-1) walked none and struck out five to win his fourth straight start and improve to 16-5 in 33 career games against New York. He has an ERA of 2.77 against the Yankees, his best against any AL opponent.

“He showed why he’s the best around and why he’s going to continue to be the best around,” New York outfielder Johnny Damon(notes) said.

Alex Rodriguez(notes) had a run-scoring single in the seventh for the Yankees, his first RBI since hitting a three-run homer in his first at-bat since returning from hip surgery Friday.

Yankees designated hitter Hideki Matsui(notes) left the game in the fifth with a tight right hamstring and is day to day.

“When he came out of the box in the (second) inning he felt his right hamstring tighten up so we took him out,” New York manager Joe Girardi said. “He didn’t feel like he strained anything but it was tight so we felt like we had to get him out.”

Jeter was scratched with a sore right oblique, an injury that has bothered him for the past week, and was replaced by Ramiro Pena(notes). Girardi said Jeter could return to the lineup Wednesday.

“I’ve pulled that muscle before and (ended up on) the disabled list,” Jeter said. “That’s two or three weeks. We’re trying to avoid that. Hopefully this extra day helped.”

Burnett (2-1) allowed five runs and seven hits in 7 2-3 innings and has not won since April 14.

Burnett’s reception Tuesday was in stark contrast with his last outing in Toronto. On Sept. 24, he was given a standing ovation and a curtain call after working eight innings against the Yankees. But after going 18-10 with a 4.07 ERA and 231 strikeouts in 2008, Burnett opted out of the final two years of his contract and signed a five-year, $82.5 million deal with New York.

With that defection still stinging, a boisterous crowd of 43,737, Toronto’s biggest since opening day, singled out both Burnett and Rodriguez with a cascade of boos.

“It was what I expected,” Burnett said. “Any time you opt out of a contract like that and go somewhere else, you’re going to get that.”

Alex Rios(notes) led off the Toronto third with a double before walks to Vernon Wells(notes) and Adam Lind(notes) loaded the bases for Rolen, who hit a two-run double down the third-base line. One out later, Lind scored on Rod Barajas’(notes) shallow sacrifice fly to right, sliding home safely when catcher Kevin Cash(notes) dropped the one-hop throw from Melky Cabrera(notes).

Damon was thrown out in the first by left fielder Travis Snider(notes) trying to stretch a single. Halladay retired the next 17 batters, a streak that ended with Damon’s one-out double in the seventh. One out later, Rodriguez hit an RBI single.

Notes

RHP Chien-Ming Wang(notes) allowed three hits in six shutout innings in his first rehab start at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday night. GM Brian Cashman and Girardi planned to discuss Wang’s status late Tuesday or early Wednesday. … Yankees RHP Ian Kennedy(notes) (aneurysm) had shoulder surgery in New York on Tuesday. Kennedy will remain in the hospital for the next couple of days and should begin throwing again in six to eight weeks. … Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi said LHP B.J. Ryan(notes) (muscle tightness in his back and shoulder) could rejoin the team this weekend but said LHP Scott Downs(notes) will remain Toronto’s closer. Downs is 3 for 3 in save opportunities since Ryan went on the DL on April 23.

The Yankees are playing scared since day one, or rather, not playing at all. Damon and Swisher are the only two getting the hits. As for the other players, get your uniform dirty, otherwise, you will be in last place this season. The "injuries" should not be an excuse. Look at the Red Sox... they are still winning. Every player in that team plays to win. The Yankees need to learn that. Its ridiculous that they cant keep a winning streak...

I agree this is a 'Dead Team". and we have to wach them every night and then hear Girardi say, "Oh they fought hard and we pitched well...yada yada..." Give me a break you guys suck and injuries are not an excuse. I'm a Yankee fan but I hate the chemistry of this team it just doesn't work. But I will be an idiot every night and still watch them.

At least try a new hitting coach! What is wrong with Teixeira? Ask the hitting coach? Ask the Cashman? Ask the manager? Can't fire the player. The way this teams is playing "dead" they will not even win 70 games. Need some changes --Fast..Start with a different approcach in coaching

Talk about a dead team. Texiera has been a huge bust and its almost mid may. He is below .200 and its going to be a long climb out of that hole. Injuries have decimated an already old team. If guys dont start getting healthy soon and the pitchers dont start pitching, this season is going to be over really early. In their division, the yankees have zero wiggle room and all of these losses in the division are going to come back to haunt them. What a huge disappointment.

Lets see - With Jeter down we get nothing out of the leadoff spot. Walk Damon because he can hit.
The number 3 & 4 hitters combined are hitting 300 about a buck 50 each. Are you kidding me. Matsui is a cripple in the 5 hole. Swisher seems to have caught the same cold that Tex has so the 6 hole is done. Walk Cabrera because at the moment he is hitting. Cano has his moments but he would rather go back to being lazy because it is easier than trying to put out too much. That only leaves the catcher spot which at the present time can't hit their weight and the 9 hole which isn't getting it done.
There is the formula for a disaster and we get to see it every night.
But the pitching will carry us this year - right. Especially the bullpen which by Cashman's observation is solid - oh yeah.
Nice job putting this team together Cashman.
No drive, no desire, no hustle, terrible on fundamentals, tons of excuses, and on and on.
Honestly I don't think any Manager can win with a team that is constructed like this one so much as it kills me to say it Girardi will have to get a pass.
Without a doubt though he will get the axe and the blame if the losing continues and it will because this team can't get out of their own way.
Don't know what's worse. Cashman in charge of this debacle or the fools at the top that let him do it.
Well they built it and the fans will come but the big question is will the fans continue to come if this debacle continues.

I am really starting to dislike Texiera! What the heck is the matter with him? I'm tired of hearing he is a slow starter! Its the middle of May so when does he warm up in August? He reminds me of A-Rod during the playoffs. This is not the Yankee team I remember its only the same uniforms out there with different players wearing them.

The Yankee organization is the best in baseball (based on championships won), but do NOT say that the Yankees are the best team in baseball. That is because the Yankees, much like the Cowboys, are no longer a team. What Girardi and company have is 9 guys going out and playing baseball, not 1 team. For all of the individual stats of the players, they seem to have serious problems coming together consistently as a team.

chuck, ive been a sox fan for over 50 years. and i cant tell you the bull@#$% i put up with over the years . and i think i can speak for all sox fans on that. when you had your worst season the yank fans were there to rub it in your face. and when you had a hopeful year and came up short , they were there to remind you in laughter. so when it came time to enjoy the moment. it was long well deserved. trust me. and now that the yanks are struggling as we did. we are having some glory. and i know we will be there again some day. but you gotta enjoy the ice cream before the sun melts it. one thing i will say. i am not an a0rod fan, however because he is in the yankee organization he gets the heat . sadly i believe there are many more out there and i think he has become baseballs target. very unfair . oh well.

I just want to point out that the bluejays over the past few years have one of the best bullpen era's going... the yanks so far this year... not so much. That should play a factor in this series.

On another note, I don't think that the Jays coaching staff gets enough credit for taking a skilled ball club and by working WITHIN the organization, field a competitive team who is outhitting the star studded yankees. I'm not proclaims Jays dominance yet but I certainly think they have made huge strides in becoming a worthy competitor in a tough AL east.

Good to see Hill and Rolen healthy and playing some of their best ball to date.
    Go Jays!!!

Yankees have way 2 many things wrong right now to be a Competitive Team. I don't think Girardi knows how to handle Pitchers as well as he may think he does and his managing style still remains questionable. I sure do miss Joe Torre and the calm demeanor he presented. I think Willie Randolf should be managing this team, the other candidate was Donnie Baseball and they certainly did not reward him for his Loyalty. All that talent and being terribly mismanaged. New Ballpark May 12th and already 6 and a half games out of 1st place, it is not a good sign!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow Alex K was dead on right about the 5-1 Jays win prediction. I predicted a Rays sweep of the Yanks last week and was getting my ARSE ripped apart by Yanks fans. I'm glad I was wrong.

    john im not bitter
the yanks are the greatest team in all of sports, right now not doing so hot but you gotta keep the faith its a long season.the giants are on track for another solid season, sucks about the rangers and the knicks...well...the knicks

what gets me pissed off is when red sox fans start posting in a forum about a jays/yanks game
i personally feel red sox fans like hating on the yankees more than they like rooting for the sox.
its like you guys are famous for being haters and s***ty underdogs and now that you've had a few good seasons you feel entitled to be arrogant loudmouths, thats our job and we earned it.

    18-1

yankclipper, if you had their record ( which you dont ) you wouldnt be singing that same tune. if you follow all the internet chats you will see that most of your fans are ready to jump ship. they believe this team sucks and will never get better. as a red sox fan i tip my hat to toronto for the bang up great job they are doing and you should show some class and do the same. quite frankly it doesnt suprise anyone that all you can do is @#$% , complain and look for excuses. face it , the yankee days of greatness is ova!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! now deal with it and go to sleep. congrats toronto. kick ass!!!!!!!!!!!!

hey 'chuck' you are one bitter man. first of all, i love NYC, it's a great place, but the yankees however are a different story. you mention that if the Jays ownership had the same money as the yanks they'd be in the same boat,. i'm not even sure what you mean by that seeing as the jays have less than half the payroll and currently 9 more wins. imagine what they could do with yankee money (which by the way comes from rich new york city white kids buying into their bullsh*t too). it's funny to read all the yankee fan posts on here, as they are so consistently ready to bash toronto fans AND THE CITY because BASEBALL fans here are excited about the team. it seems that you also forget to see that although Boston has a huge payroll (still significantly less than new york's) they have been the class of the league as of late, both on and off the field.....A-Rod anyone?..
And a quick comment to Brian S...please think of the last time the Jays have choked. Admittedly they haven't done well over the past few years, but they've never fallen apart to lose the division.

if the jays ownership had any money you'd all be in the same boat with the steinbrenners
and its not steinbrenen, eddie you stupid chooch
just because toronto is the most pathetic excuse for a city doesn't mean you have to hate on NYC

and i mean seriously if we talking about money the red sox are right up there
all they have to do is convince enough rich new england white kids to believe the lie that they've always been diehard PATS, SAWX and CELTS fans

    oh yeah 18-1
