Lowe outlasts Santana, Braves beat Mets 8-3

NEW YORK (AP)—Johan Santana(notes) is still waiting for some help from his teammates this year.

Derek Lowe(notes) outlasted Santana in a matchup of aces, pitching the Atlanta Braves to an 8-3 victory Monday night that ended New York’s seven-game winning streak.

“I love facing guys like that, especially Santana. He’s going to beat you more than you’re going to beat him, but it’s fun to be in those games,” Lowe said. “It’s fun to challenge yourself to see if you can step up when you have to.”

In a season-long trend that has become maddening for the Mets, they provided Santana with little support on offense or defense. Jose Reyes’ two-out error in the seventh inning led to four runs, saddling Santana (4-2) with his second loss this season when he did not allow an earned run.

“It’s crazy that it happened twice already,” Santana said. “There’s not many things I can do.”

The two-time Cy Young Award winner was pulled after 108 pitches with the score tied at 1. He lowered his NL-best ERA to 0.78 through seven starts—but somehow New York has lost three of them.

“Hopefully, there will come a point where we will pick him up,” manager Jerry Manuel said. “I think it’s just coincidence, I really do. He’s the type of guy that gets everybody up before his game. He might be getting ‘em too geeked—that might be it. I think it’ll turn around.”

Matt Diaz’s(notes) two-run single off Pedro Feliciano(notes) snapped a 1-all tie in the seventh, and Casey Kotchman(notes) followed with another two-run single that made it 5-1.

That was more than enough for Lowe (5-1), who took a three-hitter into the seventh and won his fourth straight start. The Braves have won five of six on an eight-game road trip against the three teams ahead of them in the NL East standings. This was their first visit to Citi Field, the Mets’ new ballpark.

“It was a matchup as advertised,” Atlanta manager Bobby Cox said.

Both teams played without a big slugger. Carlos Delgado(notes) sat out for the Mets because of a recurring hip injury, while Chipper Jones(notes) was sidelined for Atlanta due to a sore right elbow.

Lowe gave up two runs and five hits in 6 2-3 innings. The Mets pursued the sinkerballer in the offseason but were outbid by the Braves, who signed him to a $60 million, four-year contract.

New York then turned its attention to re-signing Oliver Perez(notes), a major bust this year who is currently on the disabled list.

Two infield singles and a two-out throwing error by third baseman David Wright(notes) gave Atlanta a run in the first inning. New York tied it on Omir Santos’(notes) sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Kelly Johnson’s(notes) one-out single in the seventh chased Santana. With two on and two outs, Feliciano came in to face cleanup batter Brian McCann(notes), who hit a slow grounder up the middle. Reyes slid over from shortstop but booted the ball behind second, loading the bases.

“Nothing went wrong there. I just missed the ball. E-6,” Reyes said.

Manuel stayed with Feliciano against the right-handed hitting Diaz, and his single to left put Atlanta ahead.

Yunel Escobar(notes) added an RBI grounder in the eighth, and the Braves scored twice in the ninth after McCann’s leadoff double. Jeff Francoeur(notes) had a sacrifice fly, and pinch-hitter Omar Infante(notes) delivered an RBI single.

Santana was charged with two unearned runs and seven hits in 6 1-3 innings. He dropped to 0-4 with a 2.31 ERA in six career starts against Atlanta.

The Mets have scored 15 runs in Santana’s seven starts this year, 11 while he was on the mound. They have 139 runs in their other 24 games, an average of 5.79.

“We try to figure that out. It’s hard to believe,” Reyes said. “We feel bad right now.”

Notes

The crowd of 40,497 surpassed 40,000 for the fourth time in 18 games at Citi Field. … Jeremy Reed(notes) started in RF for the Mets in place of slumping Ryan Church(notes). Manuel said he wants to give Reed a string of at-bats and he might start again Tuesday night.

Great job, Braves! Way to put the pressure on those Mets and showing them that not having the biggest names in baseball is not always the way to win. Damn Yanks! Oh, yeah. Also, if you have no idea how to spell , speak English properly or even understand how the game of baseball works and it's rules, please do all of our eyes a favor and don't comment. Your stupidity is a cancer to us all with rational thought.

just like when he was with the twins. Santana's used to it. He knows he has to allow no earned runs, no unearned runs, keep the other team at zero. He moved to the NL so he could hit and earn a few runs himself if he had to. Couldn't do that in the AL.

NO... Santana left the game in the top of 7th with a guy on first and the score was still tied at 1-1.. Parnell relieved him and gave a single and then got the 2nd out. Feliciano came in and promptly threw a ground ball out that Reyes let go through his legs and the Braves completed the inning scoring 4 unearned runs, that added to to unearned run that scored on Wrights throwing error earlier in the game.
Braves scored 5 unearned runs in all...
Santana gave up no earned runs.. Wright and Reyes lost the game for the Mets.

Santana is just flat out awesome - if you can win against him, no matter how, that says something. Good job by Lowe, keeping the Braves in the game until Mr. Awesome got pulled. Go Braves!

Johan Santana got the loss because he left the game trailing and the Mets never tied it or took the lead.

I don't understand why J. Manuel took Santana out so early! I don't think Santana could figure it out either - to me he clearly looked frustrated when he left the mound. I mean, c'mon, you gotta have more faith in a pitcher of that caliber and I'm sure he could've come out of that inning just fine....The pitching changed backfired since Escobar(?) got a hit anyway...

Maybe the answer here is that the Mets overmanage their pitching staff. If the media's going to point the finger at anyone it should be the Mets' coaching...Maybe the headline of this article should read: "Cox outlasts Manuel"...

Wow!!! Some people know absolutely nothing about baseball. Lets not give the braves any credit for putting the ball in play and putting pressure on a shaky defense. I mean come on people the Mets didnt get a hit till the 4th inning. Hopefully this win can turn things around for the Bravos. Beating the best pitcher in the game is hard to do, but the Braves have done it every time they have faced him. GO BRAVES!!!!

Looks like overpaid and washed up Lowe beat the 2nd highest payroll in baseball....The problem with NY teams is that they are buying stats not winners..... Its like seeing a beautifull woman and then opens her nasty mouth..its a turn off...same way with teams... stats look beautifull on paper but when on field and time to clutch hit...its uuuugly..........

Johan needs to tell Reyes and Wright get their hands away from their necks. Stop choking and swing at strikes and not chase balls in the dirt. The batters were all looking at first pitch strkes down the middle and then swinging at breaking balls and bouncing them in the ground. It was so pathetic watching their at bats. They finally started figured this out after the 7th inning. By this time Johan was out. Nice job Mets!!! Nice job also to Jerry Manual for leaving Pedro Feliciano to pitch to a right handed batter... smart move.. :)

Too bad the manager wasn't suspended for this game. Lifts Santana, who could probably throw 189 pitches if he had to, then sticks with the guy who is a left-handed specialist despite the fact that a right-hander came up after Jose booted the easy grounder. Bravo Mets. A truly pathetic game. The guy lowers his below 1.0 ERA and loses the game. Sick. And to Atlanta, of course.

This game almost makes me feel sorry for the Mets. Santana must be really annoyed about no run support, but very nice win Braves. Derek Lowe has pitched great with a national audience.
