LOS ANGELES (AP)—Joe Torre settled back into his chair in the cramped manager’s office at Dodger Stadium for his postgame interview when he was interrupted by his boss, there to offer a congratulatory handshake.

Torre grasped general manager Ned Colletti’s hand firmly and then gave him a carbon copy of the Dodgers’ lineup card as a gesture of appreciation.

Torre’s Dodgers broke the modern major league record for a home winning streak to start a season with their 13th straight victory, 10-3 over the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night. Torre’s cap from the game will be sent to Cooperstown, according to a team official.

“Streaks are fine, but we have more important things in mind,” Torre said. “Hopefully, it’s just a stepping stone on the way to something more important. The fact that we’re playing well takes precedence over anything else. The good part about this thing is that this is about winning games, which is what we try to do every day.”

Washington’s Ryan Zimmerman(notes) has a streak of his own. He extended his franchise-record hitting streak to 24 games with a single in the first inning.

Rafael Furcal(notes) scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning on Daniel Cabrera’s(notes) bases-loaded walk of Andre Ethier(notes), and the Dodgers broke it open with seven in the sixth, including a two-run double by Manny Ramirez(notes) and a two-run single by James Loney(notes) to surpass the 12-0 home start of the 1911 Detroit Tigers.

“Everywhere I go, all people are talking about is the streak because it’s the hot topic,” Torre said. “I’m sure these guys enjoy being be the team that owns the streak all by themselves—and maybe like the 1911 Tigers, not be around when it’s broken.”

The Dodgers’ seventh straight victory made them a major league-best 21-8 overall, matching their best start since the 1977 club started out 23-6 and won an NL pennant in Tommy Lasorda’s first season as manager. The 1983 Dodgers also were 21-8.

The six teams the defending NL West champions have played so far—San Francisco, Colorado, San Diego, Arizona, Houston and Washington—have a combined record of 66-94 and none of them are over. 500. The Dodgers have outscored their opponents 88-32 at Chavez Ravine.

“Just because a team is under .500 right now, it doesn’t necessarily mean a whole lot because it’s too early to say who’s going to be a good team or a bad team,” Clayton Kershaw(notes) said. “Most of the teams we’ve been playing are in our own division, and that’s the most important thing.”

The Nationals, whose 7-18 mark is the worst in the majors, lost at Dodger Stadium for the 10th straight time since winning on May 4, 2005. They began an eight-game road trip a day after ending their five-game homestand with a suspended game against Houston.

“The only thing you’re uneasy about is a team coming in and everybody assuming it’s a pushover because they haven’t got a very good record,” Torre said. “Last year they swept us in Washington, so we know they’re offensive-minded and they can score runs. So in order for us to win, we had to pitch.”

Kershaw (1-2) allowed a run and four hits over five innings and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first by throwing a called third strike past Austin Kearns(notes).

Cabrera (0-3) gave up five runs—four earned—and six hits in 5 1-3 innings. The right-hander, who set a club record with four wild pitches last Thursday in a loss to St. Louis, walked five batters for the second straight start and has issued 18 in 18 2-3 innings over his last four outings.

Reliever Mike Hinkley was also wild—but only for one pitch, when he walked Orlando Hudson(notes) with the bases loaded on a ball that sailed about 30 feet over the head of catcher Jesus Flores(notes) and hit the screen.

Notes

The 1911 Tigers were 51-25 at home—but 38-40 on the road—and finished 13 1/2 out of first place. Playing in Bennett Field, with its 8,500-seat wooden grandstand, their home attendance for the entire season was 484,988. … This was the first of five consecutive days in which the Dodgers and Angels are both playing at home. Over the past 29 years, the only time they went an entire season without playing at least once at home on the same day was 2006.

this is sad we all praise movie stars rock stars and any other icon that is produced from mass media attention. the sad part is that any icon we praise has dark little secrets which invole drugs not steroids. Would you rather have manny doing cocaine or heroin and be well aware that he is doing it or would you have him have a dr. prescribe him a medicine that is banned by a orginization i dunno people it sounds like everyone would rather all of these guys be doing narcotics versus steroids. i understand that a performance enhancing drug defeats the purpose of playing fair but do any of us turn our heads when a icon gets busted for DUI or possesion of a narcotic no we all go out and buy there cd or gi see there movie or wait to hear the gossip on the news this is crap

Manny just loves to play baseball and has performed at the highest 5% of all major league players.
Hs doctor should have checked on whether or not the medication was a banned medication. Manny never needed drugs to be an excellent performer as his records attests. The 50 game suspension is way over the top and should be substantially reduced. Manny manned up to the charge and took responsibility. Cut him some slack for the first offense and let us enjoy a ballplayer who performs and entertains the fans at the same time.

Should Manning's recent drug test positive effect how we see this opening record for the Dodgers? maybe 13-0* you know lol. It really doesn't matter. Let Los Angeles have it's sports teams do good, because Los Angeles is a **** hole. Good place to visit, get mugged ,inhale a ton of pollution, and leave better knowing that you shouldn't have gone there in the first place! I'm thinking if we give the bottom half of California from LA to the border (it would suck to lose San Diego and the Hollywood area but how can you give just a city to another country?) back to Mexico, then the United States, and California's whole economy would improve not to mention the unemployment rate would drop by quite a bit too and amount of teenage high school drop outs and pregnancys. Okay j/k but seriously, LA sucks!

Even with the 50 game suspension, the Dodgers are still a very solid team. At worst will probably go 25-25 in Manny's absence.

But damn...didn't think Manny would do that

I Tony G. Fannin hereby swear I will never watch a Baseball game again. I am done. I love Baseball. I am a die hard Yanks fan, believe it or not, because of my late mother. She got to see the greats when they would ride the train to barnstorm local teams. they would play my old hometown (long disbanded) minor league team, The Greenville Majors of Greenville Texas . My grandfather would have my mom write down the pitch counts from listening to the radio while he was at work. I have lived through the strikes, the betting, tried to make through the steroid era. Manny was the final straw. A-rod was my hope for a new era to be brought to Baseball, a cinch for breaking the hallowed records of Americas game. Now sadly, Baseball is a true symbol of America. Cheat, and look out for number one. I am but one fan, but one fan who truly loved Baseball. R.I.P. Americas` Game.

great start! of course it's only early May. The "D-Bags" got off to similar start last year and....well....

Dodger pitching is young and gets hit pretty hard on the road.

the bigger problem fro me is they are never on TV. It's always these over-rated East Coast teams on network TV, and locally here in San Diego as a DirecTV subcriber we don't even get thet local Padre (AAA) games.

"Who picks these lame schedules anyways?" LoL, are you a moron? Dodgers don't pick their schedule, every team plays a lot of games against their division. It is not the Dodgers fault that the NL West is one of the worst divisions. 13-0 is pretty good regardless of who you play. It's the MLB, why do you think every spread is always 1.5 points, regardless of who's playing? MLB is the least predictable regular season sport because of the longevity of the season, so while we did play sub .500 opponents, it is still not an easy task...or someone else with a crappy division in the last 90 years would have done it.

I must admit the Dodgers are playing some awesome ball. But will they fizzle in late October, like the Yankees who has big money to spend, trying to buy a world series?

Especially when some small market team like the Marlins or the resurgent Phillies, Cardinals, and the Red Sox, who are always in the hunt for a World series, play very well, late in the year.

It will be very interesting this year, who knows, who will be the final two teams in the winter classic this year?

Beware Dodger Blue you are not always true...

Sometimes you perpetrate as a champion, only to let down your faithful fan base...

Time will tell if you're the real deal this year, or will " kryptonite" (great pitching) from a low market team slow your roll?

I agree with yankfan1969, the only reason the Dodgers can go 13-0 at home is because of the scheduling. The Dodgers have now played 4 games total against teams in other divisions, and those games were against teams at the bottom of the other divisions. If they had started off the season playing the Cards, Cubs, Philllies, and Mets at home there is no way that they go 13-0. It is still an impressive thing, but just remember what teams they are doing it against.

Yankeefan1969...didn't my so called lowly Cleveland Indians blow your beloved Yankee's doors off twice in the new Yankee Stadium. Wasn't that supposed to be an easy win for the Yank's to open up the new stadium? My point being that no game is a gimme just because the team isn't supposed to be good. Get a clue!
