Pujols hits 2 homers, Cardinals sweep Mets 12-8

ST. LOUIS (AP)—Albert Pujols stroked line drives to all three fields. It was a bad omen for the New York Mets.

Pujols homered twice and Kyle Lohse lasted just lone enough for another win after jamming his right knee as the St. Louis Cardinals completed a three-game sweep with a 12-8 victory over the Mets on Thursday.

“If my swing is good, I’m going to hit the ball hard everywhere,” Pujols said. “My job is to try to see a pitch I can hit, and drive it.”

Rick Ankiel homered and doubled twice and Skip Schumaker hit a pair of RBI doubles as the Cardinals punished Livan Hernandez and won their seventh in a row at home. The Mets lost their fourth straight overall.

“I think we might have caught them on a little bit of a down slide, but that’s the way it goes,” Ankiel said. “Good for us.”

St. Louis led 11-3 after six innings en route to sweeping the Mets in a three-game series at home for the first time since Aug. 6-8, 2004.

Carlos Beltran had three hits, including a three-run homer, after moving up two spots in the Mets’ batting order to the third slot. Ryan Church hit a two-run homer and David Wright, who switched places with Beltran in the lineup, had two hits.

Mets starters allowed 16 earned in 14 2-3 innings in the series, a 9.82 ERA, and only retired one batter past the fifth inning. Hernandez (1-1) gave up all three homers and allowed seven runs and nine hits in 4 1-3 innings.

Before the Mets start a six-game homestand on Friday with the first of three against the Nationals, manager Jerry Manuel anticipated a front-office meeting about the pitching woes. Manuel said he may add another arm, going with 13 pitchers this weekend, but would go through the rotation another time before considering any starting changes.

“They’re just going to have to pitch better,” Manuel said. “If it doesn’t get any better, then you have to make some adjustments. It’s that simple.”

Pujols hit a solo homer to right in the first inning, lined an infield hit off Wright’s glove at third in the fourth and hit a two-run shot to center in the fifth. He has six homers this year and 25th career multihomer games, including two this season.

Pujols also scored four times. He increased his NL-leading RBI total to 21, leaving him two shy of 1,000 lifetime.

“Perfect player, in my opinion,” manager Tony La Russa said. “We’re lucky to have him, believe me.”

Ankiel hit his first homer later in the fifth, making it 7-2 and chasing Hernandez.

Lohse (3-0) is 11-2 in 21 starts at home the last two seasons although he barely qualified for this win. He escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fifth on Gary Sheffield’s double-play ball and left with a 4-2 lead. Five relievers finished for the Cardinals.

Lohse was hurt when he reached back to try to corral a grounder by Jose Reyes that Pujols booted at first for an error to start the fifth. Lohse didn’t believe it was anything serious, although he underwent an MRI exam.

“I was trying to stop and grab the ball and the brakes weren’t working very well,” Lohse said. “They worked too good because I stopped too quick.”

Beltran singled and double in his first two at-bats, and is 20-for-37 (.541) against Lohse lifetime with four homers and 12 RBIs.

Lohse’s first balk since July 29, 2006, and only the fourth of his career, allowed a run in the first.

Notes

Beltran is 12-for-24 (.500) the last six games. … The Mets face their first left-handed starter in Washington’s Scott Olsen. Manuel said Fernando Tatis and Sheffield, 0-for-5 Thursday, would both start. … Before Thursday, there had been three straight homerless games at Busch—the first time that’s happened since another three-game stretch in July 2007. … Pujols is a career .317 hitter against the Mets with 17 homers and 51 RBIs in 205 at-bats. … Cardinals starters totaled two strikeouts in the series.

I think the reality is we can only guess what may happen this season. Baseball is so unpredictable. The '06 season was a prime example when the Cardinals had no business (on paper) being in the World Series, but there they were after the Mets imploded in the playoffs, as did the Tigers in the Series. I,m a Cardinals fan but I thought that was the dullest and most poorly played series I'd seen.

The reality is this; The Cardinals are going to be in the hunt because they have a Hall-of-Fame first baseman(Pujols), a Hall-of-Fame manager(LaRussa, even if he is a jerk!) and the reside in a weak division. The only way they'll advance in the playoffs and even make it to the World Series is to get a serious closer. What they have now is a joke and management knows it. They tried to go on the cheap with reliefers because they have gotten burned paying big money to starters. Look out if they do make a move. Let's hope, as Cardinal fans, and baseball fans that they do. Oh, by the way, the streak of futility will continue on the northside of Chicago, just because they are the Cubs.

I hope we have to wait at least fifteen more years before we see Albert's induction into the Hall of Fame. No one can match him for consistent excellence. He's less than 30 years old; his lowest batting average of his career was .315. He already has over 300 career homers and 1500 career hits. How smart were the Cardinals to give him a ten year contract? Maybe it should have been 20. This thirteenth round pick has been good luck for St. Louis.

Wow intense posts. Problem with New York teams is you have 25 players..while the Cardinals..actually have a team.

Just think about it, when the Yankees won their championships they didnt have all star teams but a core of players who would give their leg for a WS, O'Neil, Jeter, Williams, Brocious, Posada, Cone, and T. Martinez. Now all NY does is pay the best player x amount of dollars before thinking about his clubhouse mentality and attitude. Carlos Beltran may have great stats but he can be a bonehead player. The Mets need a team leader to get into someone's face when they aren't doin well and making mental mistakes...like Yadi Molina. The Mets will ultimately fail time and time again until they get someone to step up or an addition to the roster. No hating on the Mets but it's true.

OK enough of my soap box.

From a Die-Hard White Sox fan: we've had LaRussa, and Manuel as managers while I've been alive. Never bet against a team that has LaRussa at the helm. Manuel WILL find a way to screw things up. Just like Dusty will in Cinci. Have you seen the Reds rotation?!? They're legit. But my money's on the Cards...and anyone else who can beat the crap outta the Cubs.

There was praise for Ruth,Steigel,Maris,Mantle, and Reggie..Bonds,(the creep on drugs), and Jackie Robinson,Kaline,Moses Alou, and Yoggie..but come,people...none of those players have even come close to the record setting pace that Albert has shown every year he's been in the majors. There's no doubt he strikes fear into every picthers heart when he steps to the plate. The man is awesome...!! Even Billy Martin would have loved having him on his team..!
McGuire was excellent...but Albert ? He rules !!!!!!!!!!!!
