TUCSON, Ariz. (AP)—Luis Gonzalez singled, doubled and tripled in the first four innings Wednesday of the Colorado Rockies’ 10-6 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Gonzalez is batting .381 (21-for-55) in spring training.
“He’s going to get every opportunity to show us how far he can take that this season,” Colorado manager Clint Hurdle.
Diamondbacks starter Russ Ortiz allowed nine runs—five earned—eight hits and four walks in 3 2-3 innings.
“I’ve been in this game long enough to realize that you’re going to have bad days, where its not going to go your way,” Ortiz said. “But you’ve just got to keep working on it, doing what you need to do. There’s only so many times you can say, ‘It’s just spring training and I’m trying to work the kinks out.”’
Notes
RHP Byung-Hyun Kim, who strained his right hamstring Tuesday, was placed on the DL. INF Omar Quintanilla and OF Ryan Spilborghs were optioned to the minor leagues Wednesday. Hurdle announced that Jason Smith, Choo Freeman, Jamey Carroll and Eli Marrero will finish out the position roster spots.
