SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP)—Kenny Rogers pitched four scoreless innings Sunday night in his best outing of the spring, and the Texas Rangers beat the Milwaukee Brewers 10-6.
Rogers allowed only one runner to reach third base while giving up one single, a walk and striking out six in his third appearance this spring. The 40-year-old left-hander entered the game with a 13.50 ERA in 4 2-3 innings of work.
“Kenny felt good tonight,” Rangers manager Buck Showalter said. “He pitched another inning in the bullpen.”
Rogers, who won a career-high 18 games last year, is set to pitch the second game of the season against the Los Angeles Angels and the Rangers’ home opener on April 11, also against the Angels.
The Rangers took a 4-0 lead into the eighth inning when the Brewers broke through for six runs on six hits and a walk off R.A. Dickey. Chris Magruder and Chad Moeller had two-run singles, while Dave Krynzel and Geoff Jenkins added RBI singles.
Texas struck back with six runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning to help Dickey (2-1) earn the win. Adrian Gonzalez and Laynce Nix both had two-run singles.
Milwaukee reliever Mike Adams, who hadn’t allowed a run in seven games, was touched for all six runs in 1-3 of an inning to take the loss.
“That was pretty wild,” Showalter said. “A lot was happening considering the wind wasn’t a factor.”
Milwaukee starter Doug Davis gave up three runs on eight hits in five innings of work against his former team.
“I was making a lot of mistakes up,” Davis said. “I just wasn’t in the zone.”
In the fourth, the Rangers scored a run on three straight singles, but then had two runners caught stealing on one play. Gary Matthews Jr. broke for third with Davis holding the ball. He easily threw him out at third and then Kevin Mench was caught trying for second on the delay.
“I’ve never seen anything like that before,” Davis said. “It was almost as though they thought I was a rookie or something. All I could say was thank you.”
Michael Young continued his torrid hitting pace, going 2-for-3 with a home run for the Rangers. He has hit safely in 15 of his 17 spring training games. Mench had his fifth straight multi-hit game with two singles and drove in a run, while Mark Teixeira added a run-scoring double.
Texas relievers Augustin Montero, Ryan Bukvich, Scott Feldman and Doug Brocail all pitched one inning of shutout ball.
