PHOENIX (AP)—Danny Haren pitched five shutout innings and the Oakland Athletics beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-1 on Friday.
Haren, who threw four scoreless innings in his previous start, allowed five hits and one walk while striking out three. The right-hander was acquired in the trade that sent Mark Mulder to St. Louis, and the A’s are counting on him to help replace Mulder and Tim Hudson in a revamped rotation.
The Brewers’ lone run came on Damian Miller’s homer in the sixth off Huston Street, who had four strikeouts in two innings.
Milwaukee starter Victor Santos also turned in a solid outing, allowing four hits in four shutout innings. Santos walked none and struck out five, by far his best outing of the spring.
“That was close to midseason form,” Brewers manager Ned Yost said. “He was very good today with all four pitches.”
Yost said Santos remains on track to retain the No. 3 spot in the rotation.
The Athletics scored four runs off reliever Rick Helling. Eric Byrnes and Keith Ginter each had two hits for Oakland.
Notes
Before the game, the Brewers cut six players. Non-roster left-hander Rigo Beltran was released, and pitchers Andy Pratt and Sam Narron, infielder Matt Erickson, catcher Julio Mosquera and outfielder Nelson Cruz were reassigned to minor league camp. Pratt was sent outright to Triple-A Nashville, removing him from the 40-man roster. … Yost said LF Carlos Lee, who returned to Panama to celebrate the birth of his son, was expected back in camp on Saturday.
