Rockies 7, Dodgers 1, 6 innings
“He told me to just relax and play the actual game,” the 24-year-old outfielder said. “That it is baseball where the stadiums are bigger, but it’s still the same game.”
Holliday, promoted on April 14 when Preston Wilson went on the disabled list, also doubled. He is 8-for-12 after an 0-for-7 start following his call-up.
“The fact that Matt is definitely a little more comfortable with each passing day,” Hurdle said. “He’s finding the barrel of the bat with regularity.”
Vinny Castilla went 3-for-3 with a home run.
Estes (3-1) allowed only two hits. The Rockies won two of three at Coors Field, the first series the Dodgers have lost this season.
Jose Lima (2-1) was tagged for seven runs and six hits in three innings.
“I couldn’t get loose and I couldn’t keep the ball down,” Lima said. “It was miserable out there, but then, it didn’t seem to bother Estes.”
Many of the Dodgers were upset the game was called when it was.
“You play or you don’t play,” Los Angeles catcher Paul Lo Duca said. “It was bad out there the whole game and it never stopped so why stop the game?”
The Rockies scored four times in the second inning. Castilla began with his sixth homer and after Jeromy Burnitz walked and Charles Johnson reached on third baseman Adrian Beltre’s error, Holliday hit an RBI double.
“It was tough to play,” Los Angeles manager Jim Tracy said.
Holliday hit a two-run homer in the third to make it 7-0. Castilla singled and scored on Johnson’s groundout.
“Actually it was a changeup, a 3-1 changeup,” Holliday said. “He threw me a lot of changeups and I stayed on it pretty good.”
Estes didn’t allow a hit until Lo Duca led off the fourth with a single, moved up on a grounder and scored on Beltre’s bloop single to center.
“I love pitching in that type of weather because I’m the one out there moving around staying warm,” Estes said. “I played the first six or seven years of my career in cold weather and it’s not an ideal situation forhitters.”
