PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Kevin Millwood’s overpowering fastball didn’t give hitters much of a chance.
Millwood (11-7) threw fastballs 98 of his 105 pitches (93 percent), and still reached 93 mph in the ninth inning.
“They weren’t hitting them,” Millwood said. “I was locating well so I kept throwing them.”
He retired his first 16 batters before Ojeda lined a single to left after taking a close two-strike pitch that appeared to catch the inside corner.
Vazquez led off the seventh with a hard single to right-center, and Ojeda singled in the ninth.
“He was overpowering, he had good location,” Phillies manager Larry Bowa said. “When you have good location, it doesn’t matter what you’re throwing.”
Millwood, who tossed his only no-hitter in a 1-0 win over San Francisco on April 27, hadn’t pitched past the fourth inning in his previous two starts, allowing 11 runs in seven innings.
He faced the minimum 22 batters through 7 1-3 innings, recording his fifth career shutout and third this season. He struck out eight and walked one in his fourth complete game of the year.
“I had a ways to go” for a no-hitter, Millwood said. “But I was definitely thinking about it.”
Kevin Jarvis (4-3) gave up five runs and eight hits in 6 1-3 innings. Jarvis had won his last four starts.
“He pitched pretty good,” Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. “We just ran into a buzzsaw.”
Bobby Abreu gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead in the first on a two-out RBI single.
Byrd led off with a single, went from first to third on a groundout by Thome and scored on Abreu’s soft liner to center.
Thome’s two-run double in the fifth made it 3-0. Byrd hit a double with one out and Placido Polanco followed with a single. Both scored when Thome lined a double into the right-field corner.
Byrd, a rookie center fielder, raised his average to .313 with his third four-hit game. Since moving to the leadoff spot in the lineup from the No. 8 hole, Byrd is hitting .373 (37-for-99).
“My whole goal is to get on base and score runs,” Byrd said. “I’mswinging the bat well.”
Millwood is 5-1 lifetime against San Diego. … Thome returned to the lineup after missing one game with a strained groin. … Phillies LF Pat Burrell was out of the lineup for the second time in three games. Burrell, who hit 37 homers last year, is batting .198. … Jarvis is 4-1 against the Phillies. He hasn’t allowed a home run in his last 37 1-3 innings. … Philadelphia has 10 shutouts this season, tying the Dodgers for most in the NL.The Padres have been blanked five times.
