DETROIT (AP)—It was a great night to be a Detroit rookie pitcher.
Chris Mears, who made his major league debut June 29, pitched two innings for his first career save.
Detroit won for only the second time in its last six games and improved the worst record in the majors to 22-65.
Spurling (1-1), making his 36th major league appearance, won in relief of Ledezma, who allowed five hits.
“I felt calm. I was thinking about doing the job,” Ledezma said through Tigers coach Juan Samuel, who translated. “It was the only thing on my mind.”
Ledezma, who made 20 previous major league appearances in relief, struck out four and walked none.
“He likes to try to throw the ball up over your hands, got a good fastball,” Chicago’s Aaron Rowand said. “You’ve got to try to lay off it. He got some of us chasing it up there early. We got some base hits but really couldn’t put anything together.”
Garland (6-7) gave up both runs and six hits in seven innings as Chicago lost for the third time in four games.
“Jon gave us a shot. He pitched well,” White Sox manager Jerry Manuel said.
Pena homered with one out in the seventh.
“It felt great to be able to help out my ballclub in that way,” he said. “He was pitching a great game at the time. He had the cutter going.”
Chicago’s Magglio Ordonez was ejected in the ninth by plate umpire Chris Guccione for arguing after he struck out on a checked-swing.
Paul Konerko hit a tying double-play grounder in the seventh. Ordonez had led off the inning with a double off Spurling.
Morris, who went 3-for-4, nearly homered in the fifth, but Ordonez leaped near the right-field wall and caught the ball just above the top of the fence, near the bullpen.
