Padres 7, Dodgers 1
Klesko homered to lead off the Padres’ six-run seventh inning against Nomo, igniting San Diego’s 7-1 victory over the Dodgers on Tuesday night.
Nomo (9-7) allowed only two hits through six scoreless innings but couldn’t retire any of the six batters he faced in the seventh, losing to San Diego for the third time in three starts this season.
“Klesko jump-started us there,” Padres manager Bruce Bochy said . “Nomo was on and we hadn’t been doing anything.”
“He made me look like I’d never swung a bat in the big leagues in my life in my third at-bat,” Kotsay said of his strikeout leading off the sixth.
“Hideo did everything he could possibly do tonight,” Dodgers manager Jim Tracy said. “He was trying to pitch a perfect game and he nearly did.”
Then came the seventh. Klesko hit Nomo’s first pitch of the seventh inning 449 feet for his 16th homer of the season, tying the game at 1.
Pinch-hitter Dave Hansen knocked Nomo out when he hit a drive to deep right-center that deflected off center fielder Jolbert Cabrera’s glove, hit the wall and ricocheted back to Cabrera. Hansen only got a single because Bennett hesitated at second and was held at third.
Brian Lawrence (5-9) allowed one run and five hits in six innings to get the win.
Bochy said he didn’t hesitate when he decided to pinch hit Hansen for Lawrence.
“It was fairly easy,” Bochy said, “because there were no outs. With two outs, no. I was going for the big inning and Hansen came through.”
Lawrence, with 81 pitches in six innings, had no qualms either.
“Six innings, that’s a quality start,” he said. “It’s not a matter of me going back out there, it’s a matter of us winning the ballgame.”
Nomo gave up six runs and seven hits with nine strikeouts in six-plus innings.
Tracy was ejected in the ninth after the Loretta’s single to left-center scored Gary Matthews on a close play at the plate.
The Dodgers scored their run on Paul Lo Duca’s RBI single in the thirdinning.
Dodgers CF Dave Roberts left the game after four innings for precautionary reasons with an aggravation of his right hamstring and was replaced by Cabrera. … The Dodgers placed OF Brian Jordan (strained patella tendon of his left knee) on the 15-day DL and activated 1B Fred McGriff (right groin) from the DL.
