Alou tripled into the gap in right-center in the first inning and scored when second baseman Orlando Hudson’s relay throw hit him on the right elbow and rolled into foul territory.
Baker thought for sure Alou would be thrown out at third.
“I was like, ‘Oh no!”’ Baker said. “Then the ball got by and I was like, ‘Way to go Mo!”’
Alou, who had one triple all last season, acknowledged he got lucky.
“I did it even knowing I was going to be in trouble,” Alou said. “We scored three runs right there and it seemed to be enough to win the game.”
Sammy Sosa missed his fourth straight game while serving a seven-game suspension for using a corked bat. The Cubs are 2-2 without their cleanup hitter, who did not accompany the team to Toronto.
Prior (8-2) won his second consecutive start. The 22-year-old right-hander allowed two runs—none earned—on seven hits, striking out eight and walking two in 5 2-3 innings. It was the first time this season he failed to last at least six innings.
“Maybe I gave them a little bit more respect than I should have,” Prior said. “I felt early on they couldn’t catch up to my fastball, but when they started to catch up I started to probably pick a little bit more than I wanted to and I started to run up the count.”
Carlos Delgado hit his major league-leading 22nd homer for the Blue Jays.
“It really came down to one pitch. That one in the first inning that led to three runs,” Davis said.
Martinez hit an RBI single in the second, giving Chicago a 4-0 lead.
Davis, whose spot in the rotation is in jeopardy, allowed four runs on sixhits in six innings.
