The pair could easily see their totals increase Friday night when the Blue Jays and Orioles meet at Rogers Centre.
Though he’s made just 17 starts, Cecil is tied for second on the Blue Jays with 18 homers allowed, including nine served up during his current seven-game winless streak.
Guthrie, who leads the majors with 17 losses, has surrendered a team-high 24 homers to rank among the top 10 in the majors.
While the Blue Jays (72-72) and Orioles (57-85) occupy the bottom two spots in the AL East, they’ve displayed plenty of power.
Led by Jose Bautista’s(notes) big league-best 40 homers, Toronto is fourth in the majors with 171. Baltimore is fifth with 166 longballs, paced by Mark Reynolds(notes) (32) and J.J. Hardy(notes) (26).
Cecil and Guthrie will square off for the second time in less than two weeks. Each pitcher yielded one homer in the Orioles’ 6-5, 10-inning win Aug. 30 at Camden Yards.
Cecil is 0-4 with a 4.96 ERA in seven starts since holding AL West-leading Texas to one run over 16 innings in back-to-back wins to close July. Derek Jeter(notes) and Alex Rodriguez(notes) went deep against Cecil in the Jays’ 9-3 loss to the New York Yankees on Sunday.
Despite Toronto’s lofty home run total, Cecil (4-8, 4.60 ERA) has the third-lowest run support average in the majors since the beginning of August at 2.18 per nine innings.
Reynolds has gone just 9 for 47 (.191) against the Blue Jays this year, but four hits have been homers. He’s also had 22 of his AL-high 175 strikeouts versus Toronto pitchers, who’ve had much more trouble with Hardy - batting .314 with six homers and 11 RBIs in 12 meetings.
Guthrie (6-17, 4.45) will try to avoid setting a new career high for losses. He matched season highs by yielding seven runs and four walks in five innings of Sunday’s 8-1 loss to Tampa Bay.
The right-hander is 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA in three 2011 games against the Jays, although he worked five scoreless innings in Toronto on June 16, allowing just one hit before leaving with a strained back.
Bautista has just one homer among 10 hits while batting .185 versus Baltimore in 2011. Adam Lind(notes) has launched six of his 24 homers off the Orioles, but he’s hitting .167 while going deep just twice in his last 16 games.
Toronto took three of four from wild card-leading Boston this week, getting homers from J.P. Arencibia(notes), Edwin Encarnacion(notes) and Eric Thames(notes) in Thursday’s 7-4 win. The Jays, 10-5 against Baltimore in 2011, will be trying to win three in a row at home for the first time since July 27-29 - a stretch that included the Orioles’ last visit.
The Orioles hit the road again following Thursday’s 5-4, 10-inning win over the Yankees at Camden Yards in a makeup game. Vladimir Guerrero(notes) homered as Baltimore posted its second straight extra-inning win over the AL East leaders following a victory in 11 innings Wednesday in New York.
Baltimore is 20-39 against division rivals and headed for its sixth straight 90-loss season.
