With just over five weeks to play in the regular season, the San Diego Padres and Florida Marlins are already looking ahead to 2012.

The Padres will try to keep the Marlins reeling when the last-place clubs meet Saturday night.

San Diego (57-70) took the first two games of this four-game set following a 4-3 victory Friday. Rookie Erik Hamren(notes), who turns 25 on Sunday, struck out pinch-hitter Mike Stanton(notes) with one out and the bases loaded in the sixth. Hamren, who had never pitched past Double-A and was appearing in his eighth game in the majors, got out of the inning and preserved a 4-2 lead.

“We’re finding out about guys,” San Diego manager Bud Black said. “For a lot of players, every day is a job interview.”

Stanton, who’s in his second season, was a late scratch with a sore left big toe. He leads Florida with 29 homers and 76 RBIs, and it’s not immediately known if the right fielder will be in the starting lineup Saturday.

Kyle Blanks(notes) hit a two-run homer for the Padres, who have outscored Florida 30-10 while winning the last five matchups.

Jose Lopez(notes) had three doubles to tie a club record for the Marlins (57-68), who have dropped 13 of 15.

However, Florida may have a key player back in the lineup. The team is expected to activate second baseman Omar Infante(notes) from the 15-day disabled list after he missed 13 games with a broken right middle finger.

Infante is hitting .411 (30 for 73) since the All-Star break. He also had three consecutive three-hit games before the injury.

Infante is hitless in three at-bats against Aaron Harang(notes) (11-3, 4.08 ERA), who hasn’t won at in his last three games at home for the Padres.

The San Diego native was 5-2 with a 3.28 ERA in the first nine games at Petco Park. Over his last three appearances there, however, the right-hander is 0-1 with a 5.09 ERA.

Harang gave up four runs and eight hits in five innings Monday, but didn’t factor in the Padres’ 5-4, 10-inning loss to the New York Mets. Harang had defeated them on Aug. 10 in New York.

“The last couple of starts I’ve been making some bad pitches in situations that have come back to hurt me,” he said.

Winless in his last five starts, Clay Hensley(notes) (1-4, 4.53) gets the call for the Marlins.

Since beating the Mets after moving into the rotation July 18, the right-hander is 0-2 with a 5.96 ERA.

He failed to get a decision for the second straight game Monday in a 7-4 loss at Colorado, where he struck out a season-high five while allowing three runs and eight hits in 5 2-3 innings.

Hensley, who hasn’t faced the Padres this season, fanned six in three perfect innings of relief over two games against them in 2010. He was 15-18 from 2005-08 with San Diego.
