The San Francisco Giants are among baseball’s least productive offensive clubs, a fact the St. Louis Cardinals might have a hard time believing after they were hit hard in their series opener.

Repeating their outbreak at the plate won’t be nearly as easy.

The Cardinals will have ace Chris Carpenter(notes) on the mound Tuesday night at Busch Stadium, where he’ll square off with Randy Johnson(notes) and the Giants in a matchup of former Cy Young Award winners as the teams continue their four-game set.

San Francisco (41-34) came into St. Louis this week with the NL wild card lead, but a potent lineup hasn’t been what’s made it one of baseball’s most surprising teams. Instead, it’s been the major league-best 3.61 staff ERA that’s propelled the Giants despite a less-than-stellar offense that scores just 4.1 runs per game.

They averaged 6.5 runs in their last two contests in Milwaukee over the weekend, though, and that offensive spark carried over on Monday. Edgar Renteria(notes) and Travis Ishikawa(notes) each drove in three runs to support reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum’s(notes) two-hitter in a 10-0 rout of the Cardinals (41-37).

“The way Timmy’s been pitching lately, after the first run I felt pretty comfortable,” said Ishikawa, who has four homers and nine RBIs in his last nine games.

The Giants improved to 25-5 when they score five runs or more. They’re also 19-4 when Renteria has an RBI, and the five-time All-Star has driven in a run in five consecutive games.

Carpenter (5-2, 1.78 ERA), who won the NL Cy Young Award in 2005, will have to hope for a better fate than he experienced in his most recent start. Matched up against two-time winner Johan Santana(notes), Carpenter gave up three runs and four hits over seven innings and suffered a 3-2 loss.

“The guy’s no slouch,” Carpenter said. “He knows how to pitch.”

Johnson (7-5, 4.68) does as well, and the 45-year-old left-hander has done a particularly impressive job lately. He’s 4-1 with a 2.57 ERA in his last seven starts, and gave up one run and six hits over seven innings Wednesday in a 6-3 win at Oakland.

“That’s a lot of innings for me. But I’m here to pitch on the day I’m here and I’m sure I’ll have a couple of bad games before the year is over,” the five-time Cy Young Award winner said. “In the meantime, you want to keep things rolling too.”

Johnson’s two starts against St. Louis last season didn’t go well. He went 0-1 with a 9.31 ERA, yielding five homers in 9 2-3 innings.

Albert Pujols(notes), who’s 9 for 21 (.429) lifetime with three homers and 10 RBIs against Johnson, hit one of the five. Ryan Ludwick(notes) also went deep against the Big Unit.

“A lot of us are young enough to the point where we were still in high school watching him pitch and dominate,” Ludwick told the Cardinals’ official Web site. “I remember a lot of his strikeout performances and obviously his run in the World Series with the Diamondbacks.

“I think anytime you face a guy who is going to be a Hall of Famer, it’s always fun. … It will be a challenge.”

Ballstrom, errr... Fallstrom get out from under Pujols' cup! Did you know the Giants even won the game?? Who cares about Albert "God Bless Growth Hormone" Pujols. Come to the party people if you think Al's clean, did you notice whos' numbers Ballstrom was comparing Big Al's to. Funny how steriods/growth guys seem to thrive on LaRussa's teams..... Maybe Al's getting his "supplements" from Mac's brother, who was one of the biggest roid dealers in bay area for years.... Ask Tony.

Another great effort and victory for the Giants. And more closet fauxmosexual Doggie fans like nobody and barryc68 who obviously are suffering a serious bromance with each other. Maybe Manny can share his female fertility drugs with one of you so you can make little Doggie style babies...

What the World Tony are you putting in Thurston at second base Tuesday night against the Giants and leaving out Skip....This is whats wrong with the Cardinals..Tony will not leave the line up alone...Come on Tony...Thurston needs to go back to triple A...batting 220...WOW... Cardinals are beating there own self...POOR management!!! period.. Ankiel and ludwick are not consistent. playing T Green last night was also terrible....men were left on base last night to much...one time bases were loaded and T Green hit into a double play....Send these guys back to triple A where they belong TONY... Thurston and T Green are not ready for major league...Come on CARDINALS get your act together......Troy Glaus you are very much missed......come back please....Brendan Ryan another guy went 0 for 4 last night ,,,this is terrible when you spend alot of money to go to the ball park and see professional baseball players that cant even hit a ball....Cards go get some more players like DeRosa and quit playing around...or fans will leave.Period I will not spend my money to go see Thurston a minor leaguer go 0 for 4 and Brendan Ryan go 0for 4 and T Greene go 0 for 4 ...ship them back to minor league NOW

To some of you, please keep your crude comments to yourself. I would never live in SF but it is the best city to visit hands down. The Bay area is spectacular.
Pujols will never be traded. He's already making a boatload of money. What could the Cardinals possibly get for him that would improve the team. Albert is the best hitter of his era.

The Giants are the story, they're the ones who are streaking and they are the most interesting team in the majors, yet this moron barely mentions them. It's probably better for the Giants, leave us under the radar till we make the big move.

What is this crap I hear about Pujols going to a New York team?? All I know is that I am from St. Louis, I still live in St. Louis and for as far as I know, Pujols isn't going ANYWHERE. I mean all of you people can dream about having Pujols on your teams, but that's just what it is, a DREAM. That is unless of course you're a Cardinal fan. Not only that, but I honestly don't think Pujols wants to play for anyone else. The fans here in St. Louis are well regarded as being the best. We don't boo players for having bad days and throw trash on the field. That and we are also some of the most knowledgeable fans in the world, and any person with any knowledge of Albert Pujols might know that he grew up and went to school in Kansas City, though originally from the Dominican Republic.

I love breaking this to dreamers. Pujols will spend his career in St. Louis.

The cardinals are indeed an average team as someone pointed out somewhere as a comment, but he also pointed out that the cards only have a good bat and a good pitcher who is not a real ace. Are you kidding me??? Yes, Pujols is the best hitter in baseball, better than A-Rod in my opinion and looks like a sure candidate for the MVP this season. As for the "good pitcher" I'm guessing you mean Carpenter, and he is a REAL ACE, he is by far one of the best pitchers in all of baseball and when he's dealing he becomes tough to beat. Injuries and all have made some of us fans question the talented arm of Mr.Carpenter but don't be fooled by this types of flukes, He is an Ace, a stand up person who loves to win and loves pitching for the cards and when it comes to an important match up, I can't think of anyone else to hand to ball over to than to #29 Chris Carpenter.

The only problem with Pujols being traded to a New York team is that New York, as a city, is full of low lives, but Albert could prolly adjust and do what he always does. It's gonna cost a buttload of money to find out.

My fellow Giants fans everywhere: Can you feel it like I can? It's all starting to come together now for us. In addition to our great pitching, our bats are starting to come to life. Namely, Winn, Molina, and Renteria have been on fire these last 3 games. The wild card is ours for the taking and now we're closing in on the low lifes from LA. What was once a fantasy at the start of the year is now slowly becoming reality and that is the Giants belong in the playoffs with the best teams in baseball.

Cardinals are just average. One good hitter and a pitcher who is not really an ace. It is a surprise that they are above .500 in a brutal division. Brewers - a joke until recently look like the team to beat. But they are not a team that you would like to root for - they have morons like fielder and cameron. A liitle success and they like to showboat...

Trade Rowand while he is worth something. Average isn't always the best lead off hitter. He is soooo slow..............Zito good for 3 runs, 5 innings -- Sickening punk!!! If he was a real man ( person ), he would give back some money.............. But.... they are winning !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Scary to think how bad the Cards would be with Pujols. If he doesn't homer, the Cards have a hard time winning - now even when he homer's twice - its not enough since there are few men on base before him ... if Pujols ever went to a team like Boston or Yankees - his RBIs might double.
