The New York Yankees’ lineup is getting healthier as it transitions back to American League play. A series at home with the Seattle Mariners may only help.

Though various ailments slowed down some players during interleague contests, the Yankees are surging as they try to extend an eight-game home winning streak versus the Mariners in the opener of a three-game set Tuesday night.

The Yankees (43-32) beat the crosstown rival Mets 4-2 on Sunday for their fifth straight victory. They also finished a 9-6 stretch against the NL, and matched their high-water mark for the season at 11 games above .500.

New York remains on a roll despite contending with a flu bug that made its way around the clubhouse. Shortstop Derek Jeter(notes) returned to the Yankees’ lineup Sunday after missing two games with a fever.

Left fielder Johnny Damon(notes) has missed two straight games due to illness, but is expected to start the opener against Seattle (39-36). Designated hitter Hideki Matsui(notes) should also be back in the starting lineup after a stretch of nine straight games in NL parks.

Matsui’s surgically repaired knees have kept him out of the outfield, but he doesn’t expect rust to be a problem. He’s 1 for 5 with two walks as a pinch hitter since his last start, June 18 against Washington.

“It’s not like I was sitting on the bench the whole time,” Matsui said through an interpreter.

Matsui is batting .556 (10 for 18) with six RBIs in his last five home games against Seattle, and he’s hardly the only Yankee that has had success in this series at New York.

The Yankees are batting .348 while averaging 9.0 runs during an eight-game winning streak at home versus the Mariners, but this will be the teams’ first meeting at the new Yankee Stadium. New York has also pitched well during that streak, posting a 2.75 ERA, and it will now send Joba Chamberlain(notes) (4-2, 3.81 ERA) to the mound.

Chamberlain earned a win in his last outing, giving up three runs - two earned - and seven hits in 6 1-3 innings of New York’s 8-4 victory at Atlanta on Wednesday night. This will be the right-hander’s first start against the Mariners.

Mariano Rivera(notes), who earned a save in Chamberlain’s last start, became the second reliever to reach 500 in Sunday’s game. Rivera, who also had his first career RBI on a bases-loaded walk in the ninth, joined Milwaukee’s Trevor Hoffman(notes) (571) as the only major leaguers with 500 saves.

Brandon Morrow(notes) (0-3, 5.64), who has 16 saves for Seattle over the past two seasons, continues to make his transition to the starting rotation. He is making his fourth straight start after 16 relief appearances, posting a 4.50 ERA without receiving a decision in his new role.

Morrow gave up three runs and six hits in five innings of the Mariners’ 4-3 win over San Diego on Wednesday night.

The right-hander was impressive in his one career start against the Yankees, limiting them to one run, one hit and three walks while striking out eight in 7 2-3 innings of a 3-1 victory in Seattle last Sept. 5.

Morrow will not have two-time Gold Glove third baseman Adrian Beltre(notes) backing him up. Beltre is expected to miss six to eight weeks following surgery to remove bone spurs from his left shoulder.

Beltre played the final two games of a three-game weekend series with the Los Angeles Dodgers after his decision to have surgery, and made an exceptional play in the hole to take away a base hit in Seattle’s 4-2 win Sunday.

“It’s a big blow that we’re losing him for a period of time, but hopefully we can keep it going and have some fun until he gets back,” Mariners designated hitter Ken Griffey Jr(notes) said.

Sunday’s win was the second straight and ninth in 12 games for Seattle.

Joe mauer hasn't qualified for the batting average lead because he hasn't appeared at the plate enough. (avg 3 per game) besides ichiro has 27 more hits than him.

You need to have certain number of at-bats in order to qualify for the "stats races"(avg. homers. etc) If they didn't do that , someone who had 1 hit in 1 at-bat would have a 1 average.
reply to bigbrother09447. You can check the stats provide by Yahoo.

BTW...Yankees + Phillies are the best!

gtweezy: are you the best of what Seattle can offer as a fan? Beside being a racist pig you have zero baseball knowledge. Your Mariners are coached by a Japanese, their best player is Japanese and their best all time player is African American. Always raining here in NY? What a joke coming from you.

Why does everyone keep saying Ichiro is the MLB Batting leader? That's the 3rd time I've heard that. He's 10 pts behind Joe Mauer.

Gtweezy said the other day after the Yankees swept the Mets that his good old Mariners would sweep the Yankees... Guess he was wrong, so he's got to resort to complaining about rain delays and Yankee Stadium not having a retractable roof. Here's a reason why they didn't do it... Because they wanted it to be similar to the old Yankee Stadium in order to hopefully provide a bit of the same feel to it. How about you shut your sorry mouth, nothing from Seattle matters right now, and oh yea... didn't you say Brandon Morrow no hitter too? Get outta here.

and screw you gweezy or is it wheezy. Been a Yankee fan since 1969 when the Met's Owned NY for a short time. Waited 8 years for the first title. I remember Horace Clark, Gene Micheal, Doc Medich, Ron Blomberg et al. Your just pissed cause every where NY goes they draw and are known world-wide. It's ESPN that hypes the sox run by sox fans and some met fans. PHHHHOOOEEYYY to you. If NY never wins it again I and countless others will remain loyal. Sox have some great fans, one or two that post here actually act like humans but the bulk of your fan base is post 04, band wagon pink hatters. And I could make some excuses as to why that did not go our way that year but I will leave all the excuse making to you guys when you cccccccchhhhhhhhoooooookkkkkkkkkeeee!!!!!!

Where is Daniel? Where is Nutro-boy and where is Blog hater? Mariano, the classiest and best closer ever. A-rod average is on the rise, if healthy he will be at 300 soon. Wish Cervelli would catch Joba his stuff is better than his judgment. Bruney had me worried for a moment but the Yanks bullpen has been pitching really well. It was a little difficult hearing John Sterling yell ttthhhheeeee Yankees win! The Yankees win last night due to this really, really loud choking sound coming out of Baltimore last night! Dont get me wrong Yuke, Pedroia and Beckett are awesome but to know what the haters must be feeling this morning is a bit delightful. For a team picked by many to end up in third place NY is hanging tough and when they completely gel, watch out. GO RED SOX AL EAST CHOKERS!!!!!!

Who's this Gtweezy all of a sudden? Just what we need, another cowardly piece of garbage who stoops to racial slurs. I was scrolling and I saw guys talking about us losing after being up 3-0. Another first for the Yankees. Just another example of us being the most exciting team in all of sports. One never knows...do one? I think it's better to lose four straight games than to have your heart ripped out at the last minute....TWICE!!! LMFAO!!! Peace.

The Yankees win!!!! Theeeeeeeeeeeeeee Yankees win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Red Stockings lose!!!! Theeeeeeeeeeeee Red Stockings lose!!!!!!! I hope some of you remember what I said last week. We will be tied for first July 4th weekend. Now all we have to do is sit back and watch the Stockings do what they do best: FOLD. Bruney had me screaming at the screen. Some of those pitches were floating. Daniel???? Oh Daniel???
I hope he's okay. Suicide rates among Boston fans are probably the highest in the nation. I think they call it the Bucky Dent Syndrome. Or the Aaron Boone Virus. I forget. But, anyway, sux to be a Sux fan. Peace.

First I gotta say HA HA HA HA HA HA HA. I thought for sure the Sux had this one won and I would have to hear all the wannabe Crap Sux nation fans spouting off. But then wonder of wonder and miracle of miracles the Orioles were led from the Lions Den. And Daniel Daniel Daniel, Clemens never tested positive for steroids. There is no hard evidence only allegations. The only thing is the witch hunt where 2 ex-trainers from NY teams were interviewed for a report headed up by someone with affiliation to the Redsox. But there was someone that did get suspended with Sox ties. Um that would be Manroid. You know best friends with Roidtiz. BTW Yankees Win THEEEEEE YANKEES WIN!!!!! CHEERS!!!

Hey, I love the Yanks, but I'll admit the Sox are a good team too.
(It's just the Sox have crappy fans. I'm just putting it out there... 26 championships w/o a single riot)

Right now I think both teams ought to be watching their rear view mirrors.

Well now let me see if all the teams in the american league didn't play the YANKEES for a whole season what would there attendence be,and how much revenue do you think the YANKEES give back to baseball in general. I have been a YANKEE fan for 53 years even through the 80's when they sucked . I will say nothing bad about the YANKEES -RED SOX series I told my YANKESS FRIENDS that even though they were up 3-0 it was BOSTON YANKEES my exact words were that double that bounced over the wall in right field would be our downfall. FENWAY PARK is awesome, but someday it will come down ,the dimensions suck the GREEN MONSTER IS GREAT,yet its 246 ft down the lines and what 87 ft to the pesky pole. What im saying is who ever talks last this year cant talk all they want because one of us will win the WORLD SERIES this year.

Its funny that Yankee fans think they're actually subsidizing the Mariners, who are owned by NINTENDO.

Every time a Yankee fans buys a Wii, that's more money for the Mariners front office.

Who, sadly, had no clue how to spend it and blew it on fricking horrible contracts.

Say what you want about Sexson, last I saw him he was in a Yankee uni...
