With rookie pitchers scheduled to start four straight games for the Oakland Athletics, Trevor Cahill(notes) got that stretch off to a solid beginning Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium.

Vin Mazzaro(notes) will try to follow with another strong effort and help the visiting A’s win their three-game series over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Thursday night’s finale.

Cahill yielded two unearned runs over 5 1-3 innings as Oakland snapped a four-game slide by holding on for a 5-4 win. The A’s, batting an AL-worst .235, had nine hits—their most since June 6—and scored more than four runs for just the second time in that 10-game stretch to overcome three errors.

Oakland (28-36) had scored runs in four of its previous 37 innings but plated runs in three of its first six Wednesday. Rajai Davis(notes) hit a solo home run in the third inning - his first of the season - and Jack Cust(notes) followed with a two-run shot for his second homer in three games. Cust also had a bunt single in the sixth and scored on Orlando Cabrera’s(notes) two-out base hit.

“We were very fortunate to win the game,” said A’s manager Bob Geren, whose team is 2-6 in interleague play. “Almost all of their runs came from errors. There’s been so many times this year when I’ve said we played good enough to win and fell short. Tonight, we really didn’t play that well and won.”

Mazzaro (2-1, 1.37 ERA) will make his fourth career start as the A’s trot out a rookie pitcher for the 14th time in 17 games. Josh Outman(notes) and Brett Anderson(notes) are scheduled to pitch Oakland’s next two contests in San Diego.

“It’s actually fun because (rookie pitchers) are very moldable. They’re very receptive to what they’re trying to accomplish,” Geren told the team’s official Web site. “They’re coming around. They’ve done a great job. It’s been a pleasure to watch them.”

Mazzaro, who didn’t allow a run over his first 17 2-3 innings, was undone by one bad inning in Friday’s 3-0 loss to San Francisco. He did not allow a hit the first four innings, but an RBI single by reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum(notes) sparked a three-run fifth.

“It was gonna end sooner or later,” Mazzaro told the Athletics’ official Web site about his scoreless streak. “It doesn’t make it any worse that it was a pitcher, but, yeah, that’s a pitch I’d like to have back.”

A power outage Saturday night at Texas spoiled Randy Wolf’s(notes) previous outing. After allowing 11 runs in his previous two outings, Wolf (3-2, 3.41) had yielded two hits in five scoreless innings until a light failure caused a one-hour, 41-minute delay.

“It was one of those things you can’t control,” he told the Dodgers’ official Web site. “You just have to deal with it. I stayed ready in hopes they would fix it quickly, but after 30 to 45 minutes, you can’t do that.”

The Dodgers (43-23) scored all of their runs after Wolf exited in a 3-1 win, denying the veteran left-hander his first win since May 28. Wolf won his only career start against the A’s back in 2003.

Oakland is 11-3 against Los Angeles since 1999, but has alternated wins and losses in its last five games at Dodger Stadium.

    Congtars Torre, you earned it.

hahahaha, first the dodgers suck because they are in a weak division, then the will fail because they lose Manny for 50 games..........now we suck because we have Joe Torre as a Manager? You all just think we will fail, but so far you are WRONG!

I love not only being in first place in our division but in all of baseball, I love to see all of you cry about it even more.......Dodgers will finish with the best record this year and take it all.

Oh ya and one more thing, we been kicking but in the east, central and the west, AL and NL, so your thinking we suck because we are in the NL west is your first mistake. Oh how good it is going to feel when we beat up all these so called great teams, lolol!!! I will be around to see you cry about it in October too, lol. Keep the tears coming, makes it that much sweeter when they prove you wrong.

"Doc": Thank you for your response. If you are a Dodger fan, I'm sure you and your comments are not representative of them as a whole. I've never been a Dodger fan, though I admired how the O'Malley family ran the organization for a zillion years before selling out to Fox, who in five years ruined them. If there was any team that consistently competed against the Yankees over the years, it was the Dodgers. I mourned for you when Mike Piazza was traded away. Mike never looked right in the Mets uniform. For those who are too young to remember, I am an Indians fan.

Since everyone wants to beat on Dom Fontana, let me say I agree with everything he says except I don't wish Torre bad luck in LA, as pretty soon you'll find out he is bad luck. I am an old time Yankee hater, but Torre was hired by the Yankees because no one wanted to work for Steinbrenner and no one wanted to hire Torre after his abysmal managerial record with the Mets, Braves and Cardinals. So this was a match made in heaven. The Yankee teams in the late 1990's could win with anyone as manager. All Torre did was stay out of everyone's way and occasionally kowtow to whatever Steinbrenner said. The Dodgers are in the worst division in baseball while the Yankees are in the toughest, so Torre's transition was perfectly done. As Fontana said, how could Torre let the Yankees lose the 2004 playoffs to the Bosox when they were just about dead and buried. I'll tell you how; he got into everyone's way and screwed up the works. Had he sat on his hands the Yankees would've won. You Dodger fans will find out the hard way.

Post 29 - mebiser - Thank you, you showed a lot class with your post. It is a rare thing to see props coming from the Bay Area for anything having to do with the Dodgers. Thank you for showing class and having the balls to speak your mind.

I am a Dodger-hater to the max. I hate and loathe them as any self-respecting SF Giants fan should. But I also recognize quality. It doesn't come much, if any, better than in Joe Torre.
    Congratulations, Joe!

What a crap article. Why didn't they list the 4 managers ahead of Torre? That kind of information is expected in an article entitled, 'Torre now 5th on alltime wins list'.

Why don't you tell us how you really feel? We know you once loved the guy when you were winning.
What a poor loser you are. Ask Jeter ( that's your shortstop) how he feels.

I am a Padres fan, so I hate it when the Dodgers do well, but Torre's success up there shows that he is a great manager, year in and year out. Hopefully he will retire soon for the Padres sake.

Dom, seems to forget that before Joe Torre the Yankees had not won a World Series in many years. Most of his players loved playing for him and that in itself speaks volumes. Not to mention to play for a owner like George for 12 years, that in itself is a victory. Congrats Joe, and may you continue to win until you meet the Yankees in the World Series. Thank you for all the years of being a Yankee great.

How do the Nationals shut out the Yankees? The Yankees are 37-29 with a .561 winning % and in second place in the American League East, and the Nationals who are 18-46 with a .281 winning % and eighteen games behind the National League leading Phillies? And on top of that they are dead last in the MLB? It just does not make sense. I guess only the baseball gods can answer this one. If anybody knows the answer please post it so I can know as well.

Hey Dom, you are probably one of the Yanks fans who wanted Torre gone and Girardi in there...how did that work out for you last year? Oh ya... Torre was in the playoffs last year and the Yanks gotto watch from there living rooms. The Yankees havent been a true threat since they lost players like Paul O` Niel and Brosias, those guys had fire in them.

A-roid destroyed the Yanks in my oppinion.
