It’s been 17 months since the Detroit Tigers signed Dontrelle Willis(notes) to a three-year contract extension. They’re still waiting for that $29 million investment to start paying dividends.

Willis goes for his first victory as a Tiger on Tuesday night at Comerica Park, but he’ll face the AL West-leading Texas Rangers - winners of seven in a row.

Detroit’s recent home dominance of Texas might help the struggling Willis get that elusive victory. The Tigers (20-16) have won nine straight at home against the Rangers.

“For some reason, we don’t play well up there,” Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler(notes) told the team’s official Web site.

Detroit swept the visiting Rangers in a three-game set from April 10-12. Texas (23-14) hasn’t won at Comerica Park since Sept. 11, 2007.

Willis (0-0, 7.71 ERA) will try to extend that run as he makes his second start since coming off the disabled list, where he was placed due to an anxiety disorder. In his season debut Wednesday, he allowed four runs and walked two over 4 2-3 innings of a 14-10 loss at Minnesota.

“My mindset is just simplified, going out there and really just thinking about myself and not really caring about anybody else as far as what they think,” Willis told the Tigers’ official Web site.

Since Detroit acquired him from the Marlins in December 2007 with Miguel Cabrera(notes), Willis is 0-2 with a 9.10 ERA in nine appearances. He’s walked 37 while striking out 18.

In his last outing against Texas, Willis allowed three runs and walked five in five innings of an 11-8 loss in Arlington on Sept. 15. It was his first start since being sent to Single-A Lakeland in June to work on his control.

Detroit, coming off a three-game sweep of Oakland and winner of four straight at home, will be without Magglio Ordonez(notes) for at least the first two games of the three-game set. The slugger was placed on the bereavement list Monday.

Shortstop Ramon Santiago(notes) had a career-high four hits with four RBIs as the Tigers rallied from a 6-0 deficit to defeat the A’s 11-7 on Sunday. Santiago is batting .556 (10 for 18) with two homers and 10 RBIs at home this season.

“(Santiago) had some awful big hits,” Detroit manager Jim Leyland told the team’s official Web site. “…We felt if we kept it within six or so, we had a chance.”

Texas is riding its longest winning streak since May 20-31, 2005, when it won nine straight. With Sunday’s 3-0 victory over Los Angeles, the Rangers moved nine games over .500 for the first time since June 1, 2005.

“I don’t think it can get any better than that, the three games we played at that level,” manager Ron Washington said following Texas’ 6-0 homestand.

Texas right-hander Brandon McCarthy(notes) gets the start Tuesday as the Rangers open a six-game trip. McCarthy (3-1, 5.92) went a season-high seven innings and yielded four runs as the Rangers defeated Seattle 6-5 in 11 innings Wednesday.

McCarthy is 0-2 with a 4.79 ERA in eight appearances in Detroit.

Texas outfielder Josh Hamilton(notes) is day to day after suffering a slight groin strain in Sunday’s win. He’s batting .238 with three homers and nine RBIs in five games since returning from a rib injury.

Cabrera went 5 for 12 with a home run and six RBIs in last month’s sweep of Texas. He has never faced McCarthy.

Willis is a good guy, he deserves criticism by all means but I think he's capable of getting his career back to a good standing.

One game good for Willis. He has gained weight and is obviously out of shape. He will not last long at the major league level. His career is over. I give him 2 or 3 more strarts and he is gone. Wasted his career with the fork and his diet. Too bad because he had talent as a left with an unusual delivery.

I dont get why everyone is saying magglio is going to be out as a tiger and that he "eventually" will pick up his bat...the guy is on a damn 8 game hit streak and already is looking like the magglio that has carried this offence ever since he got to detroit. you are all idiots and especially the guy in this blog who said the rangers will win...what are you smoking? peace love and gap

I thought Maggs' leave was because his wife is having surgery. He's usually a slow starter, it just seems too soon to me to give up on him altogether. Guillen, on the other hand, seems increasingly fragile, he may not have much left in the tank.
And what a great outing by Willis! He is truly a great guy and let's hope he has many more like last night,

Mags "leave" is a preliminary indication that he will not finish the season with the Tigers. It's also possible Guillen won't either. The Tigers have just enough pitching (not the best in baseball by any stretch) to wing the division, but that is as far as they will go. It's still fun to see them winning, though.

Haha, I love the Vida Blue comparison, that was amusing, but Dontrelle has a long way to go before he can deserve his name mentioned in that kind of company. Right now, I think he's closer to Oil Can Boyd. But it was GREAT to see the game he pitched today, it gave me good reason to flip the channel back and forth between the Tigers and Red Wings games, during the Wings commercial breaks.
I love my "recall" button on the remote! lol

What sucks is some "professional" blogger on Yahoo here posted an opinion blog saying he's going to pickup as many Ranger hitters as possible and play them against Willis on his fantasy team because he expected him to suck so bad and that the Tigers would try to put a positive spin on Willis' first outing off the DL and not to believe it, etc. Of course I can't find it now to leave him a comment asking how bad his team got killed if in fact he did do what he said he was going to do. Boo... GO TIGERS!!!

No one should get their hopes up over Bonderman or Willis until they get some starts in. Mags is in a funk that will work itself out sooner or latah, but look at how the reserves have done! I think they have a great team! They are getting confident in each other, but thats what winning does. Truth is tho, Brandon Inge said it all when he said, "don't any one think that this will be a repeat of last year, we're too good of a team for that!" I loved that quote!

He actually pitched a real good game in the process! He once resembled a young Vida Blue but he's still young and there's still plenty of time ahead for him.

Zach the h stands for a hold. Not sure how they determine this but it is relativly new within the last few seasons. D-Train needs a few more outing like this and we should have a fun summer.

The H in the box score refers to what is known as a "Hold" of "Holding a save". Of course a save is a lead of 1-3 runs. after the 4th run was scored in the bottom half of the 7th, a hold opportunity no longer exists. That is why the pitchers in the 8th and 9th innings didnt receieve a "H".

It sure would be nice if Willis was going to pitch every time out like this. I'm a little worried that the Rangers would have stunk no matter who was out there, though. I'm salivating at what Verlander is gonna do against them.

Don't get your hopes up, Mags is in a slump, Willis will be ok in Comerica, and the Tigers have owned the Rangers. Cabrera will be a beast in this series and you get to see the second best Tiger pitcher this Wednesday, Bondo is back...
