No team in the majors has played better away from home than the Los Angeles Angels.
Owners of the AL’s best record, the Angels look for a fifth straight win on the road and overall when they continue their series with the lowly Washington Nationals on Tuesday night.
Los Angeles (47-30) beat Washington 3-2 on Monday to improve to 25-12 on the road. The Angels, one of just five major-league clubs with a winning record away from home, have won nine of their last 10 on the road. They’ll win their sixth consecutive road series with a victory Tuesday.
Garrett Anderson’s RBI single and two Washington errors highlighted a two-run eighth inning Monday for the Angels. Los Angeles, 8-5 in interleague play, didn’t slip after outscoring the Phillies 16-5 to sweep a three-game set in Philadelphia over the weekend.
One of the key reasons for the Angels’ success on the road continues to be the work of their starting rotation. Los Angeles’ starters are 23-7 with a 3.33 ERA away from home, compared to 17-13 with a 4.15 ERA at Angel Stadium.
“Our pitching staff keeps us in the ballgame,” Los Angeles third baseman Chone Figgins said.
Tuesday’s scheduled starter, Jon Garland (6-4, 4.06 ERA), is 4-1 with a 2.93 ERA on the road, where he’s won his last three decisions.
Pitching at home in his most recent outing, Garland allowed three runs—two earned—and six hits in six innings of a 5-4, 10-inning loss to the New York Mets on Wednesday. The right-hander is 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA in two starts against the Nationals franchise, with both coming when they were the Montreal Expos.
Vladimir Guerrero singled Monday to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. He’s batting .429 (24-for-56) with six homers and 12 RBIs during that span. A former member of the Expos, Guerrero is 6-for-15 with six RBIs in four games against Washington.
“This guy is as dangerous a player as has ever been in the batter’s box,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia told the team’s official Web site.
Washington (30-48), which has dropped three in a row and six of seven since sweeping a road series from Seattle, will send Shawn Hill (1-4, 5.22) to the mound Tuesday.
Hill looks to bounce back from his shortest outing of 2008 when he allowed six earned runs and 10 hits in 3 2-3 innings of a 9-3 loss at Minnesota on Thursday.
“It’s frustrating to get the same kind of results,” said Hill, who recorded his lone win in his previous start at Seattle. “It’s getting really tiring at this point for me.”
The right-hander, who is 2-4 with a 7.64 ERA in seven interleague starts, will make his first appearance against the Angels.
Willie Harris tripled and homered Monday for the Nationals, the majors’ lowest-scoring team with 284 runs. Harris, a former teammate of Garland’s with the Chicago White Sox, is hitting .176 on the season, but is 3-for-5 with two homers in his last two contests.
The Nationals announced Monday that oft-injured first baseman Nick Johnson will undergo wrist surgery Tuesday and could be lost for the season. Out since May 15, Johnson - who missed all of last season due to a broken leg - was batting .220 with five homers and 20 RBIs in 38 games in 2008.
