The Toronto Blue Jays have been extremely productive at the plate in their last two games. Shaun Marcum wouldn’t mind similar support when he takes the mound.
Marcum looks to close an impressive May on Saturday as the surging Blue Jays continue a three-game series with the Los Angeles Angels.
Marcum (5-3, 2.64 ERA), who won a career-high 12 games last season for the Blue Jays (31-26), is 3-1 with a 2.11 ERA in six starts this month. He has the third-lowest ERA among AL starters and Toronto is 7-4 in his starts this season, including 5-1 this month.
Marcum allowed two runs - one earned - along with five hits over 7 1-3 innings against Kansas City on Monday in a 7-2 victory. It was his first win in four starts after the Blue Jays provided three total runs of support in his previous three outings. All three of those runs came in his start against the Angels on May 21.
Marcum pitched 6 2-3 innings, allowing four runs and four hits in that 4-3 loss. He struck out seven but gave up two home runs to Vladimir Guerrero and fell to 2-1 with a 3.20 ERA in three career starts against Los Angeles (32-24).
He takes the mound Saturday after the Blue Jays scored a combined 22 runs in their last two games. After beating Oakland 12-0 on Thursday, Lyle Overbay homered twice on Friday to lead Toronto to a 10-4 win.
The Blue Jays had 16 hits with Scott Rolen, Overbay and Brad Wilkerson each collecting three. Rolen had an RBI single in the fifth to spark a four-run inning that broke open a 3-3 tie.
“Anytime you can swing the bats well and get some nice production, no matter who’s on the mound, that’s the idea,” Rolen said. “We hit a tough stretch early in the season and weren’t scoring runs. But there’s a lot of season left.”
The Blue Jays are 14-4 since winning the second game of a doubleheader on May 12. During that stretch, they have averaged 4.9 runs, and have scored six or more eight times.
The Angels, meanwhile, had seven hits on Friday and were 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position. They have averaged 2.7 runs in their last 10 games, hitting just .183 during that stretch.
After Jered Weaver lasted just four innings Friday, John Lackey (1-1, 2.05) takes the mound for the Angels after pitching a season-high eight innings in a 3-2 loss to the White Sox on Sunday. Lackey allowed three runs and six hits - including a game-winning home run to lead off the ninth.
The right-hander, who began the season on the DL with a strained right triceps, had allowed just one run in each of his previous two starts.
Lackey is 3-2 with a 3.27 ERA in eight career starts against the Blue Jays. He faced them on May 20, allowing one run and seven hits in seven innings of a 3-1 victory. This is just the second time he’s facing them in Anaheim.
The Angels haven’t lost three straight at home during the same homestand since June 25-27, when they were swept by Kansas City.
