Mark Redman hopes to end a three-start losing streak as the Pittsburgh Pirates resume a four-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies at PNC Park.

Redman’s slump has dropped his record to 4-7 despite a 3.72 ERA. The veteran left-hander has yielded 17 runs in 18 innings over that span. However, he is 3-0 with a 3.48 ERA in three career starts against the Phillies.

Pittsburgh starters had lost seven straight decisions and 11 of 13 before Kip Wells pitched a four-hitter in a 3-0 victory over Philadelphia on Tuesday.

Jason Bay hit a two-run homer and Matt Lawton added a run-scoring double for Pittsburgh. Bay also had a double and single to raise his average to a team-high .313.

The fading Phillies not only lost their 12th in 16 games, they also got a big scare in the first inning when the Pirates’ Jose Castillo hit a line drive off right-hander Jon Lieber’s right elbow. X-rays did not reveal any broken bones, but it is not yet certain if Lieber can start as scheduled Sunday against the Washington Nationals.

“I was definitely concerned the way the ball sounded and the spot it hit, it hit directly on the bone,” Lieber said. “It swelled up right away. But I’m definitely relieved, and it’s not going to be that long.”

Losing Lieber was a major setback for the struggling Phillies. The right-hander boasted a 7-1 career mark against his former team entering Tuesday’s game.

Vicente Padilla will start for Philadelphia on Wednesday. He is 0-3 with an 8.76 ERA over his last three starts.
