Still looking for his first homer at brand new Petco Park, Barry Bonds will try to break through against San Diego right-hander Brian Lawrence as the San Francisco Giants continue a four-game series with the Padres.
Bonds, who has 77 career homers and 195 RBIs against the Padres—both numbers being his most against any opponent— has yet to homer in Petco, which just opened this year. The five-time NL MVP hit a two-run double in Tuesday’s 6-4 win for his first RBIs in five games at Petco. Bonds finished 1-for-4 and is batting just .214 (3-for-14) at San Diego this year.
San Francisco improved to 7-6 since the All-Star break, moving into a second-place tie with the Padres, three games behind first-place Los Angeles.
The Giants also ended a six-game losing streak to San Diego, beating the Padres for only the third time in 11 meetings this season. San Francisco had won 42 of 57 games against San Diego over the previous three seasons.
Bonds has hit 20 of his 25 homers off right-handers this season, and is a career .526 (10-for-19) hitter against Lawrence with three homers, eight RBIs and seven walks. He homered off Lawrence in the Giants’ 9-5 home loss April 20.
Sean Burroughs drove in two runs for the Padres, who had won eight of 11 games. The third baseman is batting .362 (17-for-47) against the Giants this year with six doubles and eight RBIs.
