Hermanson was scratched from his start April 25 because of muscle spasms in his back. He said that his back began bothering him the previous day during batting practice.
“It was one of those freak things that happens,” Hermanson said. “I started having back spasms, and I couldn’t even put on my socks. About three days later, I felt fine.”
Hermanson, who also spent time on the disabled list with a strained back in 1998, was placed on the DL on April 26, retroactive to April 21. The move cleared a roster spot for infielder Deivi Cruz, whose contract was purchased from Triple-A Fresno.
“It’s terrible, but what else can I do?” he said. “They put you on the DL and there’s nothing you can do but wait it out. I’m just waiting for them to come to me and say, ‘Here’s the ball, go out and pitch.’ I’ve been waiting for that pretty much three days after my last start.”
Hermanson, who grew up about an hour from Cincinnati, was pounded in his last start, giving up six earned runs and nine hits in just 3 2-3 innings of a 9-5 loss to the San Diego Padres on April 20.
However, he had a 1-0 record and 1.54 ERA in his first two outings of the season.
“The waiting has been terrible,” he said. “When you get put on the DL, you have to fulfill the time, so I have just been waiting to get back out there.”
