The Arizona Diamondbacks’ chances of making the playoffs are quickly fading away. Elmer Dessens will do what he can to keep them in the race for a little longer.

With 15 games to play, the Diamondbacks are 6 1/2 games behind the Florida Marlins in the NL wild-card race. Four other teams are also ahead of Arizona.

The Diamondbacks will look to make up ground when they open a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies at Bank One Ballpark.

To get back into the race, the Diamondbacks will definitely need Dessens to pitch better than he did on Sunday. He lasted just 3 2-3 innings, giving up six runs and nine hits, but the Diamondbacks rallied for a 9-6 win over the San Francisco Giants.

The Diamondbacks have won three of their last five. After rallying from a 4-0 deficit to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-4 on Wednesday, they outlasted them 2-0 in Thursday’s series finale.

Chris Capuano, filling in for the injured Curt Schilling, allowed three hits in seven innings, and Matt Kata and Carlos Baerga each knocked in one run.

While the Rockies have no chance to make the playoffs, they will be more than happy to knock Arizona out of the postseason chase.

The Rockies, who are an NL-worst 17-33 since the All-Star break, have won only two of their last 11 games. However, they clinched a series victory over the St. Louis Cardinals with a 9-4 win on Thursday.

Colorado had 18 hits against six pitchers, with Ronnie Belliard and Chris Stynes getting three each.
