In pursuit of his 15th win on Saturday, Schmidt gave up four earned runs and six hits in 6 2-3 innings of San Francisco’s 5-4 win over Curt Schilling and the Arizona Diamondbacks, but he did not receive a decision.
The right-hander, who held a 4-1 lead after four innings, gave up a solo homer in the sixth and a two-run single in the seventh before being taken out of the game.
“I’m glad we pulled it out—we have a pretty good record in those situations—but it’s frustrating on my part,” he said. “A four-run lead against Schilling, you expect to win that.”
Schmidt’s 2.32 ERA is the lowest in baseball, but manager Felipe Alou believes he will need more wins if he hope to compete for the Cy Young.
“He has to win a few games,” Alou said. “This year even relievers should be considered. What (the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Eric) Gagne is doing is out of this world.”
Schmidt could have more wins, but he skipped two starts earlier in the season because of right elbow tendinitis.
On Thursday, the Giants lost 5-4 to the San Diego Padres in 10 innings— just their third loss in 11 games.
Despite the loss, the Giants reduced their magic number to clinch the NL West to seven games. The second-place Los Angeles Dodgers lost 2-0 to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday.
