With several starting pitchers on the disabled list, the Kansas City Royals are counting on rookie hurler Brad Voyles to give them a boost as they conclude their three-game series with the Anaheim Angels with a doubleheader at Kauffman Stadium.
Voyles was called up from Triple-A Omaha to start Saturday’s game, but rain forced a postponement. He will instead pitch the second game on Sunday. The 26-year-old right-hander has been up-and-down this season while making the transition from reliever to starter.
He is 0-2 with an 8.35 ERA in 18 1-3 innings, spanning seven appearances, including two starts.
Lima gave Kansas City a lift before being hampered by a nagging groin strain. Hernandez needs “Tommy John” surgery to replace a torn ligament and isn’t expected to return before the middle of next season.
Appier made four starts for the Royals before tearing a flexor tendon in his right elbow. The veteran right-hander is out for the year as well and will undergo surgery on Tuesday.
Jimmy Gobble, who went 2-3 with a 6.66 ERA in five starts with the Royals, was sent back to the minors prior to Saturday’s rainout to make room for Voyles.
Despite their health issues, the Royals have won five of seven and are a half-game behind the Chicago White Sox, who beat Detroit 5-2 on Saturday, in the AL Central.
Kansas City hopes to bounce back from Friday’s 10-3 loss to Anaheim.
Bengie Molina had three hits and a career-high five RBIs for the Angels, who stopped the Royals’ three-game winning streak.
“It always feel great to contribute to a win,” Molina said. “I hope this is not the last game I have like this.”
