The Kansas City Royals finally got the right-handed bat they’ve been searching for.
The Royals acquired White in a trade with San Diego on Tuesday for minor league pitchers Chris Tierney and Brian Sanches.
They had pursued Texas slugger Juan Gonzalez for several weeks, but Gonzalez’s calf injury ruined any chance of a waiver-wire deal.
White, in his 11th major league season, has a .287 career average and hit at least .300 in five consecutive seasons from 1998 through 2001. He had 18 homers for the Padres this year and was second on the club with 66 RBIs.
“Rondell is an outstanding makeup guy and the right-handed bat is something we really need,” Royals general manager Allard Baird said.
The Royals took the opener 9-2 behind left-hander Brian Anderson, who was acquired from Cleveland for two minor leaguers on Monday.
The Royals aren’t certain if Appier will need surgery to repair a tear in his flexor tendon, but Hernandez, the team’s opening-day starter, is out for the year and will need “Tommy John” surgery to replace a torn ligament.
The last-place Rangers have lost four of five since a season-high eight-game win streak.
Rafael Palmeiro hit a two-run homer for Texas on Tuesday, his 31st of the season and 521st of his career.
The Rangers have dropped seven straight to the Royals since June 2, 2002.
