San Diego hasn’t notched a sweep since taking three in a row at Los Angeles from July 1-3. The Padres haven’t celebrated a sweep at home since winning three straight from the Expos from May 13-15 of last season.
To accomplish that feat, they turn to Jarvis, who is looking for his first win since July 26.
The veteran-right-hander, who started the season on the 60-day disabled list because of an elbow strain, is 0-3 with an 8.59 ERA over his last four starts.
He’ll try to end that skid against a team he has never beaten. Jarvis is 0-4 with an 8.10 ERA in his eight career appearances, including seven starts, against the Expos.
This season has been a series of streaks and skids for Jarvis.
After opening the season 0-2 with a 6.14 ERA, he went on a four-game winning streak.
He boasted an economical 2.23 ERA during that run, but then lost three straight starts, during which he posted a disastrous 11.40 ERA.
However, Padres manager Bruce Bochy saw signs of improvement in Jarvis’ last outing—San Diego’s 3-2 win over New York Mets on Tuesday.
Jarvis didn’t receive a decision, but allowed just two runs and seven hits over seven innings.
“He had a good change-up and a good sinker and it looked like he was himself.” Bochy said. “After three rough starts that was good for his confidence.”
The fading Expos, who have lost three in a row overall, have dropped 18 of their last 22 on the road, and have scored more than three runs only three times in 17 road games since the All-Star break.
The Expos, who have dropped 12 of their last 13 one-run road games, have lost eight straight road series.
