These pitchers are meeting for the sixth time in their careers and third in the regular season.
Brown pitched seven innings of five-hit ball to beat Glavine and the Atlanta Braves 3-0 on Sept. 25, 1996, and also defeated the 37-year-old left-hander in two NLCS games—in 1997 as a member of the Florida Marlins and in 1998 with the San Diego Padres.
The two are hooking up for the first time since April 25, 2000, when Glavine pitched a three-hitter for a 1-0 win over the Dodgers in Atlanta.
Glavine, who has struggled in his first season with the Mets, is 2-0 with a 0.94 ERA over his last four starts. He pitched on three days’ rest at San Diego on Tuesday, and only gave up an earned run and six hits over 6 2-3 innings in the Mets’ 3-2 loss.
“I certainly wanted to go out and give the team a chance to win,” said Glavine, who was denied his 251st career win. “The last three times out I’ve been as locked in as I’ve been all year.”
Brown, who has the NL’s lowest ERA at 2.25, has gone 2-1 in his last six starts following a four-game losing streak. The right-hander didn’t receive a decision in Los Angeles’ 7-5 home loss to Montreal on Tuesday, yielding one run and nine hits over six innings.
After dropping the series opener 2-1 on Friday, New York bounced back with a 4-0 victory Saturday. The Mets have won eight of 11 overall.
The Dodgers, who lost for just the second time in their last seven, are three games back in the wild-card race.
