The San Francisco Giants will again be without five-time MVP Barry Bonds as they continue a three-game series with the Montreal Expos at Olympic Stadium.

Bonds left the team early Thursday to be with his father, Bobby, who is ill with lung cancer and numerous other ailments. The 39-year-old slugger, who leads the majors with 37 homers, is not expected to rejoin the Giants until Tuesday.

“This is an opportunity for him to go back and spend some time with his dad,” Giants spokesman Blake Rhodes said. “He didn’t really have a chance to do that at the All-Star break.”

While Bonds was with his family in the Bay Area, the rest of the Giants did not arrive at their hotel until 5 a.m. Friday. After a massive blackout forced the cancellation of the Giants’ game against the New York Mets at Shea Stadium on Thursday, the team took a bus to Philadelphia and caught a charter flight to Montreal.

They managed just five hits off former teammate Livan Hernandez in Friday’s 4-1 loss—their third in a row.

Giants ace Jason Schmidt will try to end the skid.

Schmidt, who has been bothered by tendinitis in his right elbow, will be making his first start since a 3-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Aug. 5. He worked seven innings and allowed four hits in that game.

Montreal has won three of its last four and trails the Philadelphia Phillies by 5 1/2 games in the NL wild card race.
