Tom Glavine is ready to return to the mound. The hill at Bank One Ballpark is one of his favorites.

Glavine is scheduled to start Friday when the New York Mets open a weekend series with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Glavine hasn’t pitched since July 29, when he continued his forgettable first season in New York by straining his right ribcage in the first inning of his start against the Milwaukee Brewers.

He missed his scheduled start Sunday and received a cortisone shot. The veteran left-hander proclaimed himself ready to pitch after throwing on the side Tuesday and is now ready to try to turn around what has been a dismal stretch. He has lost three straight decisions and is just 1-8 in his last nine.

Bank One Ballpark might be the place to help Glavine get things straightened out. He is 5-1 with a 1.64 ERA in six career games in Phoenix.

While much of Glavine’s struggles have been his own doing, Arizona’s Brandon Webb can blame some of his on his teammates. The rookie right-hander is 0-2 in his last four starts despite allowing two runs or fewer in all of them. The Diamondbacks managed just four runs in that span, with all four games played on the road.

Raul Mondesi homered on the first pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning Thursday as Arizona beat Montreal 5-4. The Diamondbacks swept the three-game series, won for the fourth time in five games and closed within three games of Philadelphia in the NL wild-card race.

The Mets have won three of four after losing nine of 11. Tony Clark hit a tiebreaking home run to help Steve Trachsel get his 100th career win as New York beat Houston 5-4 on Thursday.
