The 27-year-old right-hander looks to snap his prolonged losing streak when the Mariners take on the Cleveland Indians in the decisive game of their series at Jacobs Field.
Since winning six straight decisions, Garcia is 0-5 with an unsightly 9.50 ERA in seven outings. He is coming off his shortest outing of the season, surrendering seven runs and seven hits over 1 2-3 innings in Friday’s 12-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox.
“There are a couple of mechanical things we’re working on,” Mariners manager Bob Melvin said. “We’re trying to be upbeat with him. We’re trying to get him some success.”
Seattle fortified its bullpen by adding two arms on Wednesday. Closer Kazuhiro Sasaki, on the DL since June 5 with fractured ribs, rejoined the club, but wasn’t activated and hard-throwing right-hander Armando Benitez was acquired from New York Yankees for outspoken right-hander Jeff Nelson.
Nelson criticized Seattle’s management last week for not making a trade before the non-waiver deadline in order to help the club excel in the postseason. Yet, the Mariners maintain that those comments didn’t prompt the deal.
The Indians snapped Joel Pineiro’s eight-game winning streak with Wednesday’s 10-6 victory. Despite the setback, the Mariners have won six of eight.
