Myers, who last lost on June 11, hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in any of his last six starts.
However, he did only last 3 2-3 innings on July 25 against Florida when he gave up eight hits and three runs. The 22-year-old right-hander bounced back on Wednesday, allowing two runs and striking out seven over six innings in a 4-2 victory over Los Angeles.
While the Phillies have been getting a lot of quality starts lately, the bullpen has been struggling.
Closer Jose Mesa reportedly has been demoted, with manager Larry Bowa opting to go with a closer-by-committee. In his last two outings, Mesa has given up four runs, four walks and two hits while recording just one out. He gave up a three-run homer in the 10th inning Sunday as Philadelphia lost 5-2 to San Diego.
“He’s having his problems right now, no question,” Bowa said. “He might have to work on the side with (pitching coach Joe Kerrigan) for a couple of days.”
Philadelphia will need another strong start from Myers as it faces a Rockies’ squad that is coming off a huge offensive effort on Sunday.
Colorado had a club-record 24 hits in beating Pittsburgh 16-4. The Rockies also tied a team record with 11 extra-base hits, including two three-run homers by Jay Payton.
The victory gave little solace to the Rockies, who had lost four straight— all by one run.
“It was a game of conviction,” manager Clint Hurdle said. “Guys were frustrated and angry. The only way to do something about that is with some action on the field.”
Colorado will send Shawn Chacon to the mound in the opener. The right-hander is 7-1 at home this season.
He’s pitched well in his last two starts, allowing only one run in 14 innings, but failed to get the win in either. Chacon is 0-2 in his last four outings, with the Rockies scoring just five runs in that span.
