No matter how well they pitch, neither the Arizona Diamondbacks nor Los Angeles Dodgers will catch the San Francisco Giants in the NL West if they don’t do a better job of hitting.

One day after combining for just three runs and 15 hits in 15 innings, the Diamondbacks and Dodgers continue their three-game series at Bank One Ballpark.

Arizona snapped its longest losing streak of the season at six games with Friday’s 2-1 victory. Shea Hillenbrand singled home David Dellucci with the winning run off Paul Quantrill in the bottom of the 15th.

The victory kept the Diamondbacks in second place in the NL West, 11 games behind the streaking Giants, who have won nine in a row. A loss would have left Arizona with its largest deficit since finishing the 2000 season 12 games out.

Fronted by a strong starting staff that includes Randy Johnson—who was superb Friday night—and Curt Schilling, the Diamondbacks have managed just 12 runs in their last seven games.

Scoring has been the Dodgers’ problem all season, and it doesn’t seem like that will change any time soon.

Los Angeles pitchers have allowed just three runs spanning 26 innings in the last two games, and the team could only manage a split. The Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies 1-0 in 11 innings Thursday on Shawn Green’s RBI single.

The Dodgers wasted eight strong innings from Odalis Perez on Friday and missed a chance to jump ahead of the Diamondbacks into second place. Instead, they are 12 1/2 games back in third.

The Dodgers are batting .242 with 361 runs, both worst in the NL and ahead of only the major league-worst Detroit Tigers (.233, 335 runs).
